Smartphone Update Policy Is Getting Sick

Do you know the Smartphone you are holding has an update policy and a cycle to follow? It's like a rule not to get outdated early but many smartphone companies aren't following the rule and no one is raising their voice which I expected from big technical smartphone YouTubers. This may look like a small issue in the modern world where everything improves at a faster rate. But this way even a one-year-old smartphone will turn outdated in the future days.

What's The Policy

The policy is that a new smartphone produced by the manufacturer company must get two android updates and 3-4 security patch updates in the timespan of 2 and 3 years respectively.

For example, if you purchased an Android smartphone from Samsung based on Android 11 then the company must give an Android update of 12 in one year after the launch and an android 13 update in the second year with some security patches and updated UIs ( User Interface ). Android 12-13 is the version of the Android operating system I am talking about which you can check in your settings, about phone or software update section.

Why It's Necessary

  • It's necessary because every app developer updates their apps to the latest version more for the latest Android operating system than the outdated ones. And that way apps in older devices malfunction a lot compared to the new ones.

  • More stability, performance, and features are available in the latest android versions. Sometimes bugs are there while updating but they are usually solved within a few weeks.

Personal Experience

I purchased my Realme 6 device during the pandemic time in the month of August-September which had Android 10 and UI 1.0. And so far in two years it's only had one UI and operating system OS system and is currently running on Android 11 and UI 2.0.

And it's next update was supposed to come in the early months of 2022 but no there's no update and there will be no update further on, declared by the Realme company itself for Realme 6. Even its younger bro and sis Realme 6i is getting a UI update to 3.0 which was announced by them but not for Realme 6. It's just been two years and they aren't going to update the OS which is rule-breaking. They even discontinued this device production. So if you now face any issues on this device you have to struggle, wait, and run a lot to get it fixed as the parts won't be easily available anymore. And if most likely they will be of other device models.

I did got two security patch updates but these are ad ons. The major updates are cancelled. Who wouldn't feel cheated, I bought this device on the hope of that it will at least get an Android 12 update but my hope and belief is gone now.

Final Thoughts

Just want to say smartphone companies are not following the rules and none is correcting them. They are going with a business model to profit themselves rather than providing customer services. If this goes on then 1 year 6 months will be enough to get your device outdated. And it's not about Realme many leading Smartphone companies MI, Samsung, Asus, etc are acting like this. A company should at least give 2 proper updates in UI and OS as per the policy. They claim to give 3-5 years of updates on their devices but most of the time they deliver this only on selected high-priced products. The policy was made by the companies only and I think unless the government makes this rule official or strict then these companies will continue this type of behavior.

Having a device with the latest OS and UI will never let you feel like you are using an old device. And what about your device which android version it's running on? And any Apple users here what's the update policy in iOS devices?

Hello to all. Since smartphones remain indispensable in the daily lives of many people, the demand for budget options is very high! That is why Sky Devices products are very popular since all their products have a reasonable price, but are reliable. When using these devices, difficulties rarely arise, but if any device breaks down, the user does not need to look for sky devices email or phone, he can report the problem on the website and receive the necessary help.

Speaking of getting profit for themselves --that is so true.. rather than providing a good customer service they will make people confused. Anyways, appreciate this article of yours. ^_^

MI has after update bugs only, lol. But with 2-3 more update patches the updates are removed. It's just because some companies don't test their softwares much and use as as testers.

so what should we do? Should we pressure the government to make it official?

First we have to make the big tech tubers speak into this matter then it can be taken publically and then to the government. Because in most of the countries the government can easily implement such rules.

Then we have a lot of responsibilities. We must first form a public opinion.

Signed petitions can create a big impact if promoted by tech tubers.

I think all this has more to do with marketing, if they don't update the device, that user will probably have to change their phone because they feel uncomfortable feeling that that your device is already obsolete. The same thing happens with batteries, no matter how much you take care of them, they end up being damaged, all so that you are forced to change your device.

Yeah, and it's a sick strategy for consumers, the responsible departments should stop this type of marketing.
