So cute you almost can’t bear it! Germany’s only panda cubs celebrate their first birthday at Berlin Zoo with a special cake made of beetroot and bamboo. Just don’t try the recipe at home!
A first birthday is always a special occasion – but when you are Germany's only panda cubs, it is especially important to celebrate in style.
Twin brothers Pit and Paule were treated to a giant ice cake made from beetroot juice, apples, sweet potato and bamboo.
They were also gifted a large pile of snow to help them keep cool, courtesy of their Berlin Zoo neighbors – the penguins.
Over the past 12 months, the pair have put on more than 150 times their birth weight to grow from 200 grams to 28 kilograms – gains that would put even a top bodybuilder to shame.
The cubs will be raised by their mother Meng Meng for up to four years, as is normal with pandas. They will then fly to China to start their lives as adults.
Father Jiao Qing is not involved in rearing the cubs, which is again normal for the animals.
