Daily wildlife photography: the crested fireback, Lophura ignita. Crested firebacks are pheasants, found in southeast Asia. There is a marked sexual dimorphism (meaning males and females have different plummage patterns), and I was so lucky to see them both! Daily wildlife photography: the crested lark, Galerida cristata. It's easy to identify them, thanks to the cute little crest! I normally see them near coastal areas, north and south; they probably enjoy the beachside as much as I do! They don't seem shy and they're loud birds, so the chirping helps to spot them too! Daily wildlife photography: the turkey vulture, Cathartes aura. They are one of the seven vulture species that we can find on the american continent. This one I found on a desert road, somewhere in Costa Rica, on his cleaning mission. Daily wildlife photography: the black redstart, Phoenicurus ochruros. This is the species I've seen increase its presence a lot in urban areas in the last couple of years, at least where I live; I dare to say that I almost see more redstarts than sparrows nowadays! But his one, I saw at the beach! Hopping up and down in this rock, checking the beach mood.

Daily wildlife photography: the indian peacock, Pavo Cristatus. We have all seen the beautiful male peacocks, but have you ever seen peachicks? I think this was the first time I saw them, in a city park in Portugal. They were roaming free in the park, closely watched by the peahen. Funny how even from a very small age, they already have that little crest!

Have you ever seen rock roses? These bushes are typical of the mediterranean region; they are resinous, with its oils being used in several natural medicine preparations, and leave a very pleasant scent (at least for me!). And I normally associate them with coastal regions, so its scent immediatly brings back memories of beaches! Good thing is... Daily widlife photography: the common stonechat, Saxicola torquatus. I like to photograph these little guys, because they commonly perch in a high position, on the top of a pole or a bush; so it's easy to take a decent photo! This one is a female, the male has a dark head. I remember they were singing to each other, but couldn't photograph her partner. Photos taken in Mourão, Portugal.

Daily wildlife photography: the greater indian fruit bat, Pteropus medius. Fruit bats are also known as flying foxes, and this species is one of the largest bat species in the world. I had seen them fly by during my trips to Asia, but this was the first time I saw them perched, in an urban park in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Their numbers were huge, almost all tall trees had bats! As the name implies, they feed on fruit, so they are completely harmless.

Daily wildlife photography: the black kite, Milvus migrans. Black kites are some of the most common birds of prey in Portugal, although they spend the winter in Africa. Found this one perching near the Alqueva dam in Alentejo, and he allowed me to get pretty close before taking off. It's one of the rare raptor photos in flight that I was able to get without getting a blurred image!

There's more than beautiful beaches near Tavira, a small city in the South of Portugal. A small castle offers a nice view to the city, and there's now a beautiful garden inside. I had been in this city quite a few times already, but it was the first time I visited the castle, and I'm glad I did!

Browsing through my phone gallery found memories of a really cool plant that I discovered in a botanical park in Sri Lanka. Did you knew that a sensitive plant existed? Mimosa pudica is a plant that coils when you touch it! Mother Nature is truly awesome.

While I can't post my usual wildlife photos, I can share the sunsets in the places where I'm taking those photos! The colours in these salt flats are amazing, and the flora and fauna here are some of the nice surprises in these vacations. Nature trails, one of my favourite ways to relax: surrounded by sights and smells of the different plants... or even playing Peek-a-boooo with a fiddler crab! In this area, water rises and covers almost all this vegetation, ar regular intervals. All these little holes on the trail are crab hideouts.

Choo choooooo! Have you ever rode in a train like this? It looks like a play train, but it's an iconic train, that helps people get to praia do Barril, one of the beautiful beaches in south Portugal. It's a very short ride, a little over 1km, and I like the landscape so much that I do it on foot... but no doubt the train is pretty cool.

Cloudy skies mean no beach for me today, but do add a lot more contrast to photography! And it's also in these situations I regret not having the zoom camera with me: a spoonbill was feeding next to an egrett, near the bushes I was photographing! I had never seen one so close, and the smartphone photography doesn't do him justice.

Daily wildlife photography: the iberian magpie, Cyanopica cooki. This bird is endemic to the iberian peninsule, and it's very similar to the eurasian magpie. To the untrained eye (and probably more trained too!), it's almost impossible to tell them apart. She is beautiful, with the azure colours and the black head. Yes, this one almost seems the intelectual type in the photo, holding its glasses while thinking about life... what the photo doesn't show is the desperate guy trying to get his glasses back! Dailie wildlife photography: the common magpie, Pica pica. They are common in southern Portugal, but strangely these were the only decent photos I could take, and from a good distance! The latest news from Celsius came a bit as a surprise: moving its headquarters from the UK to the US, and blocking further UK residents to register. Athough it doesn't affect me, seems kind of odd to block registrations from users of a given country. Daily wildlife photography: the Desmarest's hutia, Capromys pilorides. Hutias are big rodents that inhabit caribbean islands, and this particular hutia is endemic to Cuba. It's also the biggest one of the existing species, it can weight around 8 kg! This one didn't seemed that disturbed with human presence, roaming around tourists and the rock iguanas. Daily wildlife photography: the eurasian hoopoe, Upupa epops. I was so happy to see this one! It had been ages since I saw one that wasn't flying by, disappearing quickly; this one was drilling the lawn in front of the hotel, trying to find her next meal. Daily wildlife photography: the collared kingfisher, Todiramphus chloris. Kingfishers normally have beautiful colours, and these ones aren't an exception. I've never been able to photograph our national kingfisher, but these guys were a common visit to the hostel during my vacations in Indonesia. Daily wildlife photography: the Sri Lankan jackal, Canis aureus naria. This jackal is a subspecies of the golden jackal; they are a social species, and although they scavenge preferentially, they can also hunt small prey. I found this one alone, maybe on a hunting trip! Daily wildlife photography: the pied avocet, Recurvirostra avosetta. I've seen dozens of them in the salt flats in the south of Portugal! It's hard to mistake them with any other species, with their beak pointing upwards and its black and white colour pattern.
