The old lady

Happy Saturday awesome readers and writers of this platform. I hope everyone was well.

I will tell you a story that was told by the people living in a Barangay in one of the municipalities in our province. This happened around the 1990s.

It was summer that year and every farmer in that area was busy harvesting their crops. My soon-to-be Aunt was living there when she was still not married to one of my Uncles but still a kid back then but her mother remembers the whole event. And also my mother's cousins were staying there to study when that tragic event happened.

One afternoon, maybe around five or 6 pm an old lady was walking on the shore of the river near the village, seems the lady was a stranger that no one knows her. After a while, the old lady went to the Barangay and sadly met a group of drinkers along her way. The men ask the lady where she came from and when she has no answer they began to mock her and says she was a witch. The lady answered with a low tone saying.

I've done nothing unto you but why do you have to mock me just being not to answer you immediately?

And when the drinkers heard her answer they become furious and one of them hit and knock her to the ground. Some of the villagers saw what was happening and tried to help the old lady but the guys were already consumed by the spirit of liquor that they can't stop hitting and mocking the old lady. She was knocked to the ground and tried hard to stand to her feet with the help of one of those who gathered to stop those drinkers from hurting the old lady. When she managed to stand by herself the old lady raised her cane and pointed the river at the bottom of the barangay and said.

Pity on you people who live here, for a calamity is coming upon you shortly. This river will rise that it will stream in five that will destroy everything along with its way.

Upon saying those words she pointed her five fingers to the river. But no one believes what she says for they think she is just a crazy beggar who wandered to their place.

Soon the rainy season arrived and the people of that Barangay were relaxing to the comfort of their houses until evening came. And in the middle of the night, the people were surprised by unexpected flooding that reach the people's houses. There was screaming and shouting everywhere. The panicking people were crying and asking for help. Some houses near the river were flushed by the flood, it also claimed a life.

In the morning, the water goes down already but the rain was still pouring inconsistently. There they witness how the river streams in five cause the flooding and destroy the rice fields and many plants. Some animals were drowned too. By that time they remember what the old lady once told. Some say if only they did not hurt the old lady maybe the tragedy never happened. Maybe the lady went there to warn them of what was coming for them to be ready, unfortunately, the drinkers did hurt and mocked her.

My thought:

I don't know if you believe in omens, but sometimes I got to believe in this because there were instances that before such occurrence there were signs before it has to happen.

How about you guys do you believe it too? I'm happy to read all your reply in the comment box below.

We don’t know who is who, especially when they are strangers in the land, it’s not good to treat them bad

I do believe in this kind of things. We don't know someone's true identity, so we should not mock or hit or bully someone without any reason just to get some fun. Maybe it was just a co incidence but still we should be careful towards our actions.

Maybe if they don't hurt the old woman there's no flooding, but we still can't say that it was made by the old woman.

Dear Kendy, the story you told was very interesting. I agree with you that people see the result of their acts in this world. They broke the old woman's heart by harassing her, and this destroyed their village.
