When the ultimate goal of most youths in a country is to leave the country, then something is definitely wrong. When education is no longer seen as something important, then the foundation of the country need to be checked.
Yesterday was the Local government election in various states in the nation Nigeria. But it was Sad to see the same set of youths (myself included) stay indoors instead of exhibiting their civil right. These same youths that "Sorosoke" (Spoke out) during the Endsars protest.
In case you haven't heard about the Endsars protest. It's a nationwide protest orchestrated by the frustrated youths in the country. It topped the trend table worldwide (Twitter) and even earned an emoji of its own. The Youths took to the street to show their displeasure.
Though it led to the loss of lives and properties across the country, it was seen by many as a taste of what the angry youths can do. They've had enough, they've been pushed to a corner so they have no option than to fight back. It lasted for days and so many people tagged it the beginning of a new dawn in the country.
Maybe expecting them (youths) to contest in the Election is asking too much of them, but one would expect these youths who were outspoken about their desire for changes in the country a few months back to at least come out in masses to vote for the representatives of their local governments.
I had a lengthy conversation with some friends today and we talked about the election. Each of us talked about the reasons why we didn't go out to vote. What I could gather from what everyone is that. People are tired of voting for the better evil. The candidates each year are ones known to be corrupt and deceitful. The citizens know this well but do decide to go for one that seems less terrible. But even the presumed "less terrible" do end up becoming extremely terrible. This makes one wonder if voting the other wouldn't have been as bad as this after all.
What about the ones we trusted?. We saw them as a "Messiah". The voice of the people. The one who has arrived to break us free from the shackles of the tormentor. But we were left with regrets and disappointment because they weren't different from the previous. It only looked like the snake change its skin.
Any opposition or Criticism is taken as rebellion. Any voice of the masses is blocked from speaking as can be seen in the case of the Twitter ban which has for long been a medium of speaking out for the citizens. Though the government said a few days back that there was/is no ban on the usage of bird air. But you and I know the truth.
This isn't some sort of public shaming. I love my country and pray for it to be better.
We are just tired of being on the sideline.
We are tired of being called leaders of Tomorrow, we want to be leaders of today.
We are tired of unfulfilled promises.
We are tired of praying for a sudden miracle.
We are tired of hunting for jobs that aren't available.
We are tired of watching while all future is being gambled with.
Above all, we are tired of being called leaders of Tomorrow, we want to be leaders of today.
I'm not giving up on the country yet. I believe we can rise again. I hope the coming presidential election will birth some positives. Not everyone will be opportune to leave the country. Moreover, nowhere on planet earth can be like home. We believe this nation can rise again. And together we will.
