Save out of the little you have
There is an idiom that says a penny saved is a penny earned. It means saving out of the little you have now is something you'll be glad you did in future. Saving ahead of rainy days or unforeseen circumstances is a good habit one can cultivate. It takes discipline and self-control not to spend wastefully.
Saving, no matter what age you are, is all about discipline and a determined mind to see it through. My mum believed in saving from the very beginning and taught all of us. Every time she took us shopping, she bought us some sweets or ice cream and put aside a coin in our piggy banks. She made a wooden piggy bank for every one of us and when the year ends we all break it and get whatsoever we desire, though our parents do have a say in what we choose.
Showing us the value of money at an early age made me disciplined and determined to save. Saving with a wooden piggy bank isn't safe or logical for me now but luckily some apps help with that. Apps like Piggyvest and Cowrywise are used here in Nigeria for saving. You can pick a date/sequence and the amount you want to save and easily it is done. In the course of my education, I worked at different places as a teacher's aide to pay my way through school. That way of living has made me appreciate the value of money and save more than ever before.
I now contribute part of my earnings in my different ventures to several savings accounts and share some with people that I care about and who care about me. Saving does not have to do with age. You can start today and begin saving for your future use. That doesn't stop you from treating yourself to some good food or soul-lifting activities. Enjoy your money since you worked for it.
You don't have to wait until you have a lot to save. From the little you have, you can keep a little for future use. We are all aware that saving is an act of discipline and hard work. You need to resist yourself to save. The temptation to spend without thinking is always there, sometimes I give in to the temptation but after getting that Shoe or cloth I desire but don't need, I am filled with regrets.
Saving is a habit that one can cultivate. It's not easy but must be done if you want to get ahead in life.
As said earlier, every penny saved is a penny earned. Here are a few tips on how to save without much hassle
-. Set up a savings account, it helps you track your savings and makes it easier for you to save within it.
-. Save for your goals before buying something that is not necessary. Have a list ready of things you need.
-. Save in advance, especially for the rainy days or when work is not going on well
-. Set up a piggy bank. A piggy bank is a container where you deposit your loose change or money as you earn it. It can also refer to an account where your money is stored until you have enough to make a significant purchase like Piggyvest I mentioned earlier (I'm sure other countries have their's too)
-. Don't spend all your salary every month, as little as 10% of your net income over time can go a long way toward building your wealth silently and securely
-. Another thing one needs to avoid is impulse buying. Impulse buying is a powerful thing that can tempt you into spending your money on stuff you don't really need. Spend a week without making any impulse purchases and see how much money you save.
-. keep good books of account, finance and budgeting are serious business, so it's good to take time to keep track of your finances and know where they are going.
In conclusion, this is a decision you have to make yourself and it has no time attached to it. You can start today.
