After waking up from a nap, as usual, my head is a little dizzy. My usual remedy is to listen to music for a while. Then while I was scrolling down on my playlist, I saw the album, Saturday Night Wrist by Deftones, and remembered that the song isn't that loud nor mellow but still a rock song. I listen to this kind of song back then to relieve some stress out of my head. Now, I have stumbled upon it again when I'm scrolling down my playlist. There's a song in the album that I love most, which is titled, "Hole In The Earth".
I can think of a lot of things when I hear the title and lyrics of this song. The songwriter of their band often abstractly writes their song and I can't often decode what was the story hidden behind their good music. Unlike the songs of My Chemical Romance, Taylor Swift, Green Day, Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, et cetera, which you can just picture out the story lingering in the lyrics as you hear it right away.
Let's break down my thoughts.
To take it literally, I can think how we did take advantage of the earth so much. We overused our resources neglecting what will be its bad effects on the earth. Truth be told, you are as guilty as I am for this matter. We all have our fair share of what's happening right now in the world — the rapid climate change.
We throw our garbage anywhere. We throw it on the streets, on the pavements, beside the drainages, on the riverbanks, and left it on the shore. What did we get? Flashfloods. Red tide. We cut down the trees and we are not replacing them afterward. People dug holes to mine minerals beneath the earth. Then throw the waste into the rivers and now they're polluted. Just imagine how many forests have been wiped out just to operate that pit mining. Those trees could supposedly contribute to regulating the carbon dioxide that was emitted anywhere and to hold the grounds to prevent landslides.
Manufacturers have been emitting methane gases from their factories every day. All kinds of pollutants have been emitted on the roads from the various kinds of vehicles that were passing by. Adding more pollutant gases to all of those, where the burning of garbages in all different places around the globe. It can even be in every household sometimes. What did just all of these have contributed? Surely, holes in the ozone layer, which is the one protecting the earth from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Now that the damage has been done, we are reaping what we had sowed. The earth gets warmer that creating a huge impact globally.
And to take this more literally, just take this belief for example, which is called the "Donut Earth Theory".
This was so absurd and hilarious, right? Unfortunately, there are some people who said that the earth is neither flat nor spherical but is torus-shaped, or something that looked liked a donut. This idea started as a joke at the FlatEarth.org society but some people take this seriously and backed up the idea.
This is such a literal HOLE IN THE EARTH!
You can read more details about that theory at this blogsite and I have also borrowed the photo from them, Vice.com
Those were the literal meanings behind the song that I can think of. Going back to the song, the real story behind those lyrics was far from what I have thought, though.
According to the Deftones' lead singer, Chino Moreno, the song speaks about his way of dealing with the challenges that he and his bandmates have been through while recording the album, Saturday Night Wrist. Moreno was going through a divorce at that time and one of his bandmates was suffering from a medical condition called Saturday Night Palsy. The album was also derived from it. They were going a lot of speed to finish the recording which didn't help at all for their mental wellness. The song just basically talks about the loopholes at their world of making music.
There's A Hole In The Earth, I'm Out.
I think everyone has this "hole in the earth" thingy in our lives. Situations that we can't control from happening; hence, inevitable. When you are aiming to complete a task, it's not all the time that you can make it without interruptions along the way. There can be bumps that we might stumble upon without noticing. There can be some holes that we might fall into that we didn't see it coming. There can be something that will suddenly come up to delay us or stop us rather from achieving what we want. These things just come out naturally, and out of our control. Then, instead of saying immediately, "I'm out", after failing a few tries, try saying, "I can do this. I wouldn't give up." That will fill in the hole to lift you higher from where you fall, just try it.
I don't know what challenges or prompts can fit this article that I have made. Will this fit the promt, "The Earth", from our #promptfactory or from that challenge where you should write an article which is inspired from a song? Whatever the matter will be, I'm only hoping that I make sense over there.
Thanks for reading up to this point, my beautiful readers! Stay safe and take care of yourselves.
Well then, until next time.
WAHAHAHAHHA I can't believe na there are some ppl who take that donut theory as a real thing. like, wtf? HAHAHA
