Yesterday, I have published the first part of this that cover questions to ask about child's head injury and question on back and joint pain. Read it here.
3.Stroke
In today's time, mortality rate becomes younger and younger in age. Its just do devastating to see young people who are too young to die leaving their families and dreams broken. One leading cause is due to stroke.
After the onset of a stroke, you have 3hour window of opportunity in which clot-busting drugs could save your life or someone and reduce damage. Its symptoms could occur all over the body, but most occur in brain.
Signs include sudden difficulty speaking or mental confusion, the inability to use an arm or leg, a facial paralysis, usually on one side. One can hve mild stroke, but its just as important to treat. As soon as you think you or someone is experiencing stroke, ask for help Immediately to drive you to the nearest hospital. Ask the doctor, "Could I/him be having a stroke? What about giving clot busting drugs right now?"
An MRI or CT brain scan will show whether the stroke has been caused by a clot or bleed. If it's a clot, medication called TPA could dissolve the clot and prevent further damage.
Unfortunately, this medication must be used within the first hours of a stroke, so don't idle: be an impatient patient and get to the hospital immediately and ask if this life-saving meds is suitable for you.
4.Severe headache
There are many different types of headaches; cluster, sinus, migraine.
An aneurysm isn't a type of headache, it's an abnormal widening or bulging of a blood vessel. It causes severe debilitating headache when the blood vessel ruptures and blood enters the brain.
Aneurysms can occur as birth defect or may later develop in life. Some have type of aneurysm in the brain that could rupture anytime. If one is feeling severe headaches accompanied by nausea, vomiting or seizures, go to the hospital or call emergency services. Ask a doctor, "This is the worst headache of my life-could it be possibly an aneurysm?"
5.The flu
For most people, the flu is a nuisance. But for the immune -compromised, aged or chronically ill, it can be deadly. Every year, everyday around the world many die of flu or its complications.
I have also experienced having flu one time in college which I think was due to my lowered immune system resistance. Having a toxic academic classes, plus responsibilities as an ROTC officer which required Monday -Wednesday -Friday standard operation procedure at 7:00pm-10pm and MWF reveille at 4am-6:30am.
I felt the symptoms which includes high fever, chills, aches, pains, stuffy nose and dry cough which lasted for 4days yet I have to attend my major classes at the 2nd day. I adhered to my mother's advice of steam inhalation with salt and lemon grass, ginger tea, and tolerable hot water therapy.
Flu was caused by a virus and lasts three to four days typically. But when symptoms persist for a longer period of time, visit your doctor and ask, "Im still feeling terrible bearing in mind my medical history, what else could be wrong with me?"
The details you give your doctor, helps him catch the problem. He may recommend a chest X-ray to spot pneumonia or possible early signs of lung cancer.. Perhaps a blood test can be run to look for other possible infections.
6.Breast cancer
We know that high risk of developing a cancer is having a family history, and one of this is breast cancer that can occur both in men or women but more common in women.
Let's take a woman(name withheld), 49years old for example. Her mammograms were difficult to interpret due to her dense breast. Her mother died of breast cancer so she was anxious to cover all bases. So she asked her doctor, "Can I have an ultrasound even if my mammogram was negative?"
Sure enough the ultrasound showed suspicious lesion that was missed on the mammogram.
The lesson here is that, not ultrasounds are better than mammogram. Its the combination of the two that yields best result.
