Kwek-kwek is a hard boiled quail egg that coated in batter and deep fry until its crispy. The batter itself is flavor less so i have no idea it has to be orange. Maybe just to look kwek-kwek more appetizing? If that's the reason, then it works.
Unlike fish balls that have been around as long as i can remember, kwek-kwek seems to be relatively new filipino street food that's been around for last 20years or so.
Its served with a spicy chili vinegar dip or sweet sauce dip. You can find also kwek-kwek in some other bar as well. The bite sized portion is ideal for bar food.
Tokneneng is actually the exact same things as kwek-kwek except its made from hard boiled egg of chicken.
