Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. —Confucius
I never imagined that I would land in a construction company. As in never in my imagination that I would have my luck to engage in this field for my course is far away from it.
Before when talking about construction all I had in my head is that more of it are the works of civil engineers and architects. And don't forget the hard labor of the masons, helpers, apprentices, welders, housekeeping, painters, polishers, controllers, etc.
My past work before I came to this company is an encoder. I encode data and all. It's an easy task for me for it is in my field and I studied IT. I also become a document controller but I only on small sets of plans.
Timekeeper
After I gave birth my community branch head which also is my Tito offer me to work under him on a small project he handled as a timekeeper. I immediately agreed because I need money for the supplication of both me and my baby. He was only four months old when I started working.
Being a timekeeper I enjoyed the job actually because it really is an easy peasy job for me. Handling 50 men are just a piece of cake.. lol!
Months after and the project was done and the main office called to offer me to work in the main office as an encoder. Since it's my forte so I gladly accepted it and pass my resume for the job. Even though I didn't have to do that because I am actually hired or promoted in the position I just give my resume for formalities because it is still a company.
Encoder
I became an encoder for months after I was transferred to the main office. Encoding payroll and some quotations. I was always teased by my supervisor because my fingers were really fast at typing. I'm not bragging but I've been typing keyboard ever since First-year high school and it's also my course in college.
After those two peaceful months, I was again handed with many job description
Clerical/Admin assist/Finance/HR
In the year 2018, Lady Boss told me that she needs a hand on paper works for she can't handle it anymore. Of course, there's an increase in wage but I am not comfortable doing such work. The company is just a small firm accepting different projects small or big we accept it even though there are only a few office staff.
Big Boss doesn't trust many staffs that's why he only chooses a few that includes Lady Boss as the overall manager, me as an assist, two messengers, two architects in the office, and one supervisor. We have many staffs on site but they don't stay in office for a day. So it's only us every day seeing each other hehe.
I started from making cost proposals to interviewing employees, to handling subordinates onsite. Then it comes to a point that my opinion matters in the office. Lady Boss will ask me if we should email this or put it like that, things that she's the head on making decisions yet she confides on me a no-knowledge but starting learning the basic. I am the one handling wages, visiting sites when the supervisor can't handle the laborers.
I am known by the laborers as the one who never smiles at work. The reason why I always visit sites is that the employees are afraid of me. I was known as tactless and straightforward when it comes to working. I'm handling the distribution of wages because they can't complain if I'm in front of them. I look like a monster to them.
Working at a construction firm is never easy. Each day you get to learn many things about construction by the plan, the quotation, analyzing the drafts with each scale. I'm no engineer brain for I am an IT undergrad. But I get to learn because Big Boss keeps bringing us into meetings which also lead us to learn how to present on some bidding with other contractors. I'm not an expert in this field but I get to lead some projects with the help and guidance of Big Boss and Lady Boss. The hardest part that would rack your brain is the purchasing. You need to call suppliers to compare their prizes. I am no big voice and I get complaints about it. There were times that I am actually shouting while talking to some suppliers. And my monitor needs another twin for I can't multitask with only one. sorry for the rant
my noise post: https://noise.cash/post/16v77kr8
I rant in Noise earlier because I was really pissed in the early morning at work.
It really is true that I have little knowledge about construction before and little by little I get to study the basics because Big Boss gave us the opportunities to do so. I can't read blueprints before and those lines and numbers. Sometimes I get to learn it the hard way especially when asking in site about this and that hahaha.
I appreciate everything about construction EXCEPT PURCHASING, I really hate the job honestly. The main reason is that I really have a tiny voice which is my natural voice. Calling suppliers is a pain in the neck especially when they can't hear you because your voice is like that of a 10-year old kid. (imagine)
my noise post about the hilarious convo: https://noise.cash/post/l8v774zg
I had this convo with a supplier of wood that leads with her introducing me to other products, I'll just translate some.
Me: Hello good morning, may I ask if you have Yakal Wood?
Supplier: Yes Maam
Me: Do you have these specs ma'am? (telling her the specs)
Supplier: Ma'am aren't you feeling well because your voice seems different and it's very low?
Me: This is my normal voice madam, so do you have these sizes?
Supplier: not to bother you ma'am but I recommend you this medicine ma'am to bring back your normal voice blah blah (I already told her it's my normal voice)
After 10 minutes of her talking about my voice
Me: okay ma'am I'll try to search it...so do you have the sizes of what I've asked earlier?
Supplier: No maam
Ack! I spend almost 20 minutes listening to her and ended up gaining nothing. My voice is the issue when it comes to calling suppliers. I am fine with asking for quotations through emails but using the telephone? nah. mostly no good will come out and they always teased me with my voice. ugh
I only applied as an encoder, honestly, and ended up having lots of workloads. It's really stressful but I love my job also. The pressure sometimes is overwhelming but as they say, it's all part of the job. And our families get to enjoy some comforts because we can give it to them through working diligently.

Thank you for reading my rants lol!
Keep safe & God Bless
Fin!
You were blessed to land in a company that gave you the chance to improve. I wish we have the same system in every kind of job. I find it sad actually that we are basing it on degree and not skills. Notice the jobs we have available. Most of them requires degree holders when in fact it can be handle by undergrads given the proper training. Everyone goes through training anyway.
