The Eternal Rain

A picture is worth a thousand words...

I could not agree more. Don't you just love how a single stimulus like an image or a photograph ignites something in you, be it emotional, physiological, or purely fantastical?

I do love looking at pictures and stitching a whole story out of them. It's amazing how one can come up with a whole narrative that could stem out from a still image and make an incredible and very descriptive story.

And here's an example of that concept. We were given a single image and all we have to do is to take into consideration what we see, and what we feel looking at the picture and create a story out of it. And here's how I did it:

https://pixabay.com/

Kids look out of the window when it's raining all sad and disappointed because that just means that they wouldn't be able to play with their friends. They couldn't run around, they couldn't ride their bikes, and they couldn't just hang out and do what children do outside with other friends.

But for Kurt, he's looking outside looking all sad because every time it rains, it reminds him of that one day when his father left them and never came back.

It was an early day in June and Kurt was playing in their garden when the door of the house opened and his father emerged from it with a large duffel bag in his hand.

"Dad? Where are you going?"

"Son, I just have to go somewhere very far. I will be back."

"But it's raining dad."

"Sure it is son. Sure it is." his dad hugged him tightly and Kurt pushed him back.

He saw a drop of water run from his father's eyes and thought that it was just from the rain. He ran inside and he went straight into the kitchen. He pushed a chair near the counter so he could reach the umbrella that was hanging from a hook. He took it and quickly ran outside.

He was trying to give the umbrella to his father but he can't do anything since all he saw was his father's back from afar. He tried calling out to him but his father didn't look back.

"D...Dad?"

He sat in front of the door and waited for his mommy. She returned from work and it was already around 10 in the evening. Kurt fell asleep just in the doorway. She yelled at him and hit him on the butt. He was then ordered to go to his room.

But instead, he stayed at the top of the stairs while he watched his mother cry over a piece of paper that was left for her on the table.

In his young eyes, he saw that his mother changed after that and it felt like the gloomy weather of the rain never stopped. They lived in constant cold and disarray just like how the raindrops fell that day.

A few years passed and their living situation got worse every single day he just watched her mother deteriorate and clung to the bottle as her only peace in the world.

It was then, one afternoon that he was looking out of his window and just looking at how the raindrops rolled on the window pane. He saw a figure from afar walking closer to their way. He got up and ran downstairs, grabbed the umbrella, and ran outside to meet the man halfway.

Kurt stopped in his tracks. He just gazed at the man with a cold stare. Because who he thought was his dad coming back for him was the social worker that visited him once or twice.

"Hey there son, where's your mother? I have come to get you."

He fell to his knees and just bawled his eyes out.

As it turns out, Kurt's mother was dead for days inside their house in an apparent overdose. The house that they stayed in was just not a suitable habitat for any human being.

And Kurt's rainy days continue.

This is an entry to the freewriting exercise.

The prompt is the image above, what do I see? I just see a kid looking outside while it's raining and I can feel that the kid's feeling a negative emotion. Just with the kid's body language, there may be sadness, longing, dismay, or even disappointment.

Personally, I feel sad looking at the image, it may not be exactly like that but I do relate with my story, big time. Plus, I really think that the rain is the epitome of melancholy.

So what do you think about this one? Can you do it too? I would love to read your version, you can submit it to Prompt Factory afterward.

That's what I have and I hope that you enjoyed it.

It’s really cool how you wrote a story for just looking at the picture, kurt is already broken inside of him.

What I find mesmerizing is you writing a whole story (which feels like the beginning anyways) from just a picture. So cute

Its quite impressive how you're able to write story our of that image and even if you're given of a different photo for sure you will still make a great one.

That image for me looks like he is into travelling for a holiday vacation in his grandparents farm... And the rest is history.

there is no doubt about that statement that a pics tell a thousand words. Infact let's just put it, that a pix is a summary of a a whole even. What mat take several pages if a book to tell can be told in a single photo.
