July 21, 2020- Police Brigadier General Albert Ignatius Ferro, director of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7), believes gossipers could be useful as contact tracers who can help stop the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) here.
Again, this has earned much criticism among the public.
I was a victim of false information spread by the gossipers. If this directive of Police Brigadier General Albert Ignatius Ferro will be implemented, these quidnuncs will have the courage to spread more possible fake information thinking that polices are on their side. They're are not reliable because people can make stories. These quidnuncs may use their power to harm others.
My grandmother was also a victim of these rumormongers. She was positive on rapid-test but not on swab test. I already made an article that differentiates rapid-test and swab tests. Because of a lack of awareness and education, these rumormongers spread the news on the whole neighborhood. This has created unnecessary fear in the community and discrimination to my grandmother. My family is now considering filing a case against these people.
According to Bayanihan As One Act of 2020, under Section 6, groups or individuals who spread fake news and information on COVID-19 or take advantage of the current crisis, causing panic and chaos will be punished by imprisonment of two months or a fine of P10,000 to P1 million or both.
Authorities should use other resources to speed up locating high risk and positive individuals. They should consider funding an app developer to develop an app that can help to trace positive individuals. It must not end there, they should spend on advertisement so people can be aware that such an application is existing. They should also spend on hiring trustworthy contact tracers. Currently, we have 38,000 contact tracers, far to DOH's ideal number of 94,000.
I understand that these officials are just trying to help. But they should think of it carefully. The privacy and safety of their fellow countrymen depend on their actions.
