Struggling Together; Surviving the Odds (On Academic Freeze) Survival of the Fittest, a term made famous in the fifth edition of "On the Origins of Species" by Charles Darwin, stated that organisms which best adjusted to its environment succeeds. In brief, only the fittest survives. The status in our educational institution seems to be reminiscent of such term especially now that students' voices are boisterously seeking for academic freeze. As a flashback, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) upheld its belief that we are indeed ready for the challenges that the pandemic poses against our educational system. Accordingly, the top universities have been into flexible learning even before the emergence of the health outbreak and that the other universities have already shifted to such mode of learning. And so, in the face of the pandemic, Cagayan State University pushed through with the opening of classes and did not contemplate the possibility of having an academic freeze, thus eliminating it in the equation. In its pursuit of adapting to the current situation, CSU braces itself with its flexible learning strategy (LENS and social media) and printed module for those who have weak connectivity. To reiterate, learning will not just be through online. CSU will be utilizing blended and flexible learning where professors use online and offline instruction synchronus and asynchronous assessment. Now, will this provide quality learning? How effective is this strategy? The answers to these questions are what we should look forward for. Undeniably, CSU administration is ready. But are we, students, really ready for it? On August 17, 2020, we entered into the unknown. As we kicked off the online classes last week, the excitement that we used to feel during the opening of classes was turned into confusion and fear. Probably, we were overwhelmed by confusion and fear for we entered what we call "New Normal" in the field of education. Currently, we are inside of a maze struggling to choose the path to take that would get ourselves out. We are inside of a dark tunnel walking hastily to seek for light. Considering the fact that we are in an unprecedented moment, we are put in a more challenging stance. But we could not just waver. Despite this, we know that learning should never stop. That is why we gathered ourselves and prepared to take on the challenge of the new normal. We really want to learn. Trust us. We badly want to pursue our education. Believe us. We are trying. Hear us. In as much as we would like to continue learning, we also struggle. Just like our administration who painstakingly adjust, there are also times when we lose the sight of the way. But we are grateful. Whether we like or we don't like to study is clearly not the question. But, it is more of, are we ready or not that justifies the situation. Students may be asking for academic freeze but I vouch on one thing, it does not mean that they don't want to study. Assuming that students who request for academic freeze don't want to study sounds apathetic and insensitive. In fact, academic freeze is not our bastion of hope. We would never like to opt this if only there is a levelled playing field. We would never resort to expressing clamor for such if only we are as privileged as the others. But the sad reality is, some of us don't have the means to adapt to the new normal. A number of students are not privileged enough to acquire equal access to the education that we would be receiving for the meantime. And, if these things do not make them fit enough, does this mean they have to be left behind? Does this mean they would not succeed? I come from a poor family. My father is a farmer and my mother is a housewife. It has always been our plight to agonize because of lack of money. To be fair, if we look at the situation mathematically, the expenses that we would have to spend during face-to-face classes which include our foods, fare, boarding fees, and auxiliary matters are much bigger than what we spend for the blended and flexible learning. In fact, it is a weak argument against the aforesaid learning strategy. But, today is not a usual and lucky day for all of us. Our parents have become jobless. And, given our situation, my parents could hardly suffice our basic needs at home, something that is worsened by the pandemic. We are in a pandemic and every peso counts. It pains me inside to ask for money to buy load knowing that the budget is already allotted for our daily needs. The situation of those who are in favor of academic freeze could be more painful. Their stories could be worse. Yet, do not judge them because you are not in their shoes. Do not judge them because amidst this, the determination that we all have to pursue and finish our studies is beyond words. Asking for academic freeze does not equate to resistance to learning. It is just that situations of numerous students do not permit them to maximize their learning, hence their request to put it in a halt. Not everyone has a gadget or money to acquire such in order to view the materials. And not everyone has a stable connection to access the learning modules due to the internet connection which is disappointingly sluggish. Everyone wants to continue learning but not everyone can easily adapt to the situation. So, is academic freeze the answer? NO. Should they be left behind? NO. Don't these students like to have good life? NO. Should they be disregarded? NO. I am not in favor of academic freeze but I have reservations. I am not in favor of academic freeze but I understand those who call for it. They also want to learn as much as possible and they also have plans of having a good life. I firmly believe that there is always a way in making everything possible in the midst of pandemic. We may not be really ready. Starting something new is definitely not easy. But, doing a thing, no matter how hard and painful it is, is better than just complaining but doing nothing. As students, we are willing to take on the challenge of the new normal. But our willingness to learn necessitates support, understanding, care and empathy. This is not survival of the fittest. This concept should not apply to our case. Every CSUan deserves to receive sufficient amount of help to get "fit", fit enough to survive. It may be in the form of reaching out, load allowance, leniency in the passing of requirements, and consideration in the grading system. On the other hand, since as students, we would like to survive, we might as well try our best to be fit. Help ourselves by doing the tasks given to us responsibly and diligently without an iota of procrastination. If we are asked to perform an activity, do it. If we are to submit an assignment, work on it. If we have concerns, express ourselves. This article comes with fervent hope to empower and enjoin all CSUans to be together in this journey. Meanwhile, while it is true that learning should continue, may we be embraced by compassion so that we realize that no CSUan should be left behind. Remember the line "One CSUan" that we enthusiastically chanted during the last campus visit. As CSU vows to transform lives by educating for the best, it should hear our voices. Listen to us who struggle. Hear our pains. Together, we struggle. Together, we face the odds. There should be no lone survivor here. We should ALL be survivors.
Hi, everyone! How are you? I hope you are all doing great! Sending you virtual hugs! ❤
ABCD Of Life Life has it. Everyday has a new hope for learning. Noteworthy, we have learned about the ABCD of life. We started learning letter A which stands for ABILITIES. We are very much thankful for being taught with the basics. Now, we already know how to read, how to write, how to count, and how to listen accordingly, which are the essentials of further pursuits in life. Next, we learned about letter B. B which is all about BEAUTY. We were taught on how to see beauty. As what Confucius said, everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it. For me, I found my elementary journey beautiful. Everyday was beautiful. There was beauty in our parents and techers who tirelessly and unhesitantly shared themselves to us. There was beauty in learning. There was beauty in playing with our peers. Indeed, we gained beautiful experiences and met beautiful human beings, both took part in our holistic development. Consequently, we learned about letter C which speaks of CHARACTER. Our days weren't just spent for the enrichment of our mind. As a reflection of the belief of Aristotle, "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” We owe our parents and teachers a lot for molding us into God- fearing and kindhearted human beings who are likewise respectful, honest, diligent, industrious, helpful and cheerful. The lessons that we got from our epic days when we got scolded and reprimanded by our parents and teachers are definitely foundations of our better selves. And lastly, we learned about letter D which represents DREAMS. We began to dream of becoming someone we would like to be in the near future. Many of us would want to become teachers to help children in hitting the books. A number of us would want to become doctors to treat sick and injured people. And, some of us would want to become soldiers to protect us. Anchored on our personal desires, we already started the journey towards the realization of our dreams. Whatever we become in life, we will forever carry with us the learnings that we had with life's ABCD.
Special "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." - Ignacio Estrada Education is a basic human right. No one should ever be denied of such. And, in the pursuit of universal access to quality education, the idea of inclusion is highly ecouraged. Inclusion underscores the significance of an embracing academic institution for one's growth and development. Having this said, it is expected that the world gives an avenue to all children to receive education regardless of age, gender, social status, etc. Good to know, the world already widens its horizon as it has also already opened its portals for the 'special ones'. Around 8.1% of Filipino children between 0 and 18 years old have disabilities. This is equal to roughly 3 million kids based on local estimates cited by UNICEF. Millions of kids whose life seems to be unfortunate for some people, whose life seems to be underprivileged. I feel sorry for them because they are not able to live a normal life and I know for a fact that the world is harsh especially to those 'diffetent'. But, different is special. And, they are not special for nothing. Special education (also known as special needs education, aided education, exceptional education or Special Ed) is the practice of educating students in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, and accessible settings. These interventions are designed to help individuals with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self- sufficiency and success in school and in their community which may not be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education. Personally, I have seen the situation of special children who are deprived of education. I have a nephew who is considered to be 'special'. Well, I cannot label him with any disorder or special case for he has not been diagnosed with any yet. Since his parents did not have him checked up by medical professionals, his case is still enigmatic for us. But because I was already introduced to a wide array of topics that concern disabilities and disorders and as signs suggest, I believe my nephew is suffering from ADHD. He is Christopher Jr., a ten-year-old boy who was once given an opportunity to enter school. However, this chance is short- lived. He went to a Day Care Center but after about two weeks, his parents surrendered for, accordingly, they could not endure his restlessness, impulsiveness, low frustration tolerance, tantrums. There was even a point where he erased the writings on the board as the discussion was going on. As I have known this, I pondered on the issue of children with special needs. In order for individuals with special needs to be independent and productive members of the society, their needs should be identified, and they should be provided with the necessary training environments and services. As a community, we must come together to build a truly inclusive education system, with the recognition that every child, given the appropriate support and care based on their individual needs, can reach their full potential and achieve their dreams. We must acknowledge that many of the barriers standing in our way are not merely physical, but also social and attitudinal. Having been able to learn more on Special Education is such an amazing experience. It is life- changing and I have gained a more understanding perspective. Primordially, the value of education is accentuated with this subject. I have learned that our country is really moving forward on inclusive education. Moreso, this subject offers a keener look on the underpinning factors of what we call special education. We started learning the basics. What does Specicial Education mean? What are the legal support for such? What are the issues, challenges, and trends in this regard? All these things are discussed thoroughly. Our discussions inside the classroom shed light on the concepts. The interaction that we had contributed to formation of knowledge. As we were able to watch the movie "The Gift" starring Nash Aguas and Sharlene San Pedro, we were introduced to a story of family, love, and friendship. I have learned that the support- system of special children means a lot. Giving them due holistic support might not Experts believe that the vast majority of students with disabilities — more than 80 percent — can meet the same academic standards as other students, when they have the right support. In short, with the right support, children learn better together. In adulthood, they will be more likely to embrace diversity, respect differences and fight for equality, not only for themselves but also for others. This is the foundation we need to foster a truly inclusive society. Undoubtedly, they are within our power to change. What we need is commitment. Our children deserve the chance to learn together and from each other. As role models, we must enable them to access these opportunities.

Are you satisfied with the performance of your national government in countering the COVID-19 Pandemic? Why or why not?
On Divorce Issue Really, I don't want more families to be broken, that is why I am not in support to have divorce legalized in the Philippines. First, Filipino culture puts high regards to the value of family. And the reason for this is the fact that we are family- centered and we do everything for our families. With divorce, we would give a legal option for parents to part ways and break their family. Thus, perpetuates the idea that the family as the basic unit of our society where culture is first cultivated can be ideally broken. Second, marriage is entering into a sacred contract which involves God. Divorce disregards the sanctity of marriage. Giving a legal means for the spouses to easily marry again and possibly doing it over and over again would question the said contract. And third, it's also an issue on the children concerned. There would be much effect to the children seeing their parents remarry. Divorce supports such emotional abuse to the children. Besides, conflicts are indispensable in the course of married life and breaking the vow is never the panacea. I don't advocate separation of family members. I don't support brokenness. I want to see families in tact. Divorce should not be made an option.
Unity in Diversity: The Issue on Cultural Relativism In the face of cultural diversity, tolerance, acceptance, and respect are of high regards. The principle of cultural relativism tells us to embrace our differences and be considerate of other's culture. Considering the geographical setting of the world and even in our country, it is really indispensable for us to have variations in traditions, beliefs, languages, arts, and ways of life. Well, there should really be no disputes on this reality if only there is tolerance, acceptance, and respect of other's culture. Now, what is the significance of cultural relativism? And, why do we really have to observe such? First off, it tells us how beautiful human race is. Regardless of where on earth or what society, group, place, or time a person comes from, cultural relativism shows off the beauty of diversity. We are beautiful for we are diverse. We are beautiful because we we have different ways of living. Second, it is all about giving others what you would want to receive. For this matter, we all want respect. Thus, it is just to respect tje culture of others so that in same manner, they would respect yours too. It is respecting their struggles, their history, their personal way of living as long as they conform to universal language of human rights. And, third, we should respect the culture of others because diversity in cultures should be celebrated. It is also a good platform to learn good parts of every culture wherein we are taught with cultural values and allow us to evolve into a better human. In today's world, if we are able to respect and widen our horizon on the cultures of other people, there would be peace and love for these two things spring from tolerance, acceptance, and respect.
Voice of the New Breed **Once upon a time, young Filipinos were given the chance to speak for themselves. This is through the Sangguniang Kabataan. However, the past SK officials neither sufficed nor fulfilled their duties and responsibilities. Hence, their voice was muted. And then one day, the mask on their lips were removed and today youth's voice echoe with euphonic splendor explicating the hope that its new breed brings saying it has already endured its toll.** **This issue might be somewhat cliché and it had been recoursed several times. However, with the rebirth of Sangguniang Kabataan in the country and as young leaders are put to office, this issue has not yet doomed and yet is becoming a fear.** Retrospective Sight The past could barely tell that failure was the word pinned to the SK organization. A 2007 study by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the UNICEF entitled, “The Impact of Youth Participation in the Local Government Process: The Sangguniang Kabataan Experience,” stated: “The SK’s performance for the past ten years has been generally weak. This is especially true in terms of coming up with legislations, promoting the development of young people, submitting reports and holding consultations with their constituents.” This is not to mention several more issues attributed to the institution such as corruption, nepotism, and recurring programs focusing only to sports and pageantry. These things things led to its suspension by the Congress. New Breed Truly, SK just needed to be overhauled and not to be abolised. Recently, by the virtue of RA 10742 or the SK Reform Law, elections for SK officials were once again conducted with the hope of giving birth to new generation of young leaders, hopefully now more ready to serve their functions. However, while the government was given the ample time to sort things out altering what needed certain changes in the Local Government Code, success is not yet assured. They can just promulgate and revise the legal grounds for the SK organization but its sustainability and long-time effectivity chiefly rely on the SK officials themselves. Legally speaking, the law is lenient towards the standards or qualifications for an SK official. While it may sound bias to say that it should have striffer qualifications to observe, it must have been taken into account by the SK officials that with their positions come tedious tasks and serious responsibilities. Of course, the concept implied by the saying 'history repeats itself' is plausible. It is then a question of privelege to all SK officials if they allow history to perpetuate. Sound Sleep Apparently, without the lurking of prejudice, it seems that various plans of the SK organization are currently in a hiatus. It may be due to the school activities and personal matters of the SK officials, however they are still not excused from fulfilling their duties remembering what they ought to perform in their oath of office. Are their plans being executed well? Or should it be asked if they do have plans to execute? Failure to execute plans is failure to serve, isn't it? The way to sustain the life of SK is making its officials active. Thus, it is high time to rewire their minds and wake them up from the lullaby of sound sleep. True Spirit SK is an avenue to train young individuals to become ready because in the near future, they would be the ones to lead the nation. Hence, the true spirit of service and leadership should already be imbibed in their minds so that they would be able to utilize them. And true spirit of service and leadership could be self- taught and these could be learned by practicing them as early as now. Service is not merely about executing the things that have been planned, it is also extending your hands to those who urgently need them. Leadership is having the passion to stand, speak in behalf of your people and lead the way for them. If the leaders lose their way, and so are their people. There are times that with the call of service and leadership, one can no longer eat or sleep properly, but that marks extra service, extra leadership. Foremost, being someone worth- emulating is what makes a leader. What the leader does automatically becomes the standard that other people observe. That is why as young leaders, SK officials need to see themselves as mirrors who reflect their doings to their constituents. Pursued Legacy Leaving a legacy doesn't mean conducting recurring activities such as sportsfest or pageants. It doesn't mean constructing marker with names printed on it. It doesn't mean posting tarpualin with pictures attached to it. Legacy is more than these. It is about proving them wrong. It is about showing them that SK is an organization of true service and leadership. It is about spending the fund wisely for the common good. It is about not corrupting the public funds. It is about getting that fulfillment whenever the stipend is received because one really worked for it. Yes. It is about proving wrong those who underestimate this organization, and proving the administration right in breathing to life the new SK. ***Once upon a time, a new breed was born and its voice thrived.***
Social Media and I Social media is a game- changer. It transformed the way I socialize with people. It has greatly affected my lifestyle. I have Facebook, Intagram, and Twitter accounts, to begin with. I started using Facebook in 2011. And, many years have passed, I am totally hooked by this social networking site. As I wake up in the morning, the first thing I look for is my phone. I always want to check my social media accounts. Basically, it's the best way to socialize nowadays. I gained a lot of friends with my social media accounts. I think that these are also informative in many ways, just make sure that you don't become a victim of fake news. I find Facebook very entertaining. It's worth my time to scroll, read posts, and watch videos. Whenever my timetable is free, I never miss to open my Facebook application. My social relationship is not really affected in a negative way because I see to it that I balance my time socializing on these social networking sites and socializing in the real world. In fact, I use these sites to gain friends and meet them in real life. One thing I am also proud of myself is that, I don't use my social media accounts to post my grievances, grudges or hatred towards anyone. Whenever I am not in good terms with someone, I don't post something about it on social media. I just don't think it's the proper forum for such. In the end, I think that it always depends on how one handles the situation. Since I maintain my healthy life and thriving social relationships in an actual context, I think I'm doing well with my friend- social media.
How To Prevent the Spread of Identity Theft and Fake News? The advancements that we are currently enjoying brought about by modern technology unfortunately gave rise to novel crimes. Through the various social networking sites, crimes still find the way to put their victims in danger. Identity Theft, False Information, and Fake News are the most rampant crimes committed online. This is alarming considering the vast majority of people that access Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, to name a few. We have to take a stand against these. First, we have to be vigilant. We have to learn how to spot these crimes. It may sound a little complicated but we just have to use our critical thinking skills in every profile and information that we see online. Is this real or not? This has been the question that I always ask whenever I see something especially if it is suspicious. Eventually, I check further if it's a real account or a dummy one. I also don't trust theses dummy accounts. I never entertain accounts with sufficient information in their profile. I have trust issues and I think it helps to save me from being a victim. Second, report suspicious accounts. After evaluating accounts and if they turned out to be fake, I always report them. This is one way to stop them from victimizing other people. They have to be stopped. And third, don't be one of them. Of course, the fight against Identity Theft, False Information, and Fake News should be fought with utmost commitment and integrity. Thus, I make it sure that I don't create fake account, I don't create false information, and I don't proliferate fake news. Having these said, I think that I am forewarned in the online war against such crimes. I am forewarned and I am forearmed.
Why can't I just sleep and let the night pass without thinking of you?

Why Do Privacy and Confidentiality Matter in One's Life? First off, I believe that privacy is power. What other don't know, they can't destroy. Confidentiality is wisdom. It's wisdom because you don't let them know what they don't need to know. The fast emergence and vast acceptance of social networking sites in todays communities has seemingly revolutionized human behavior, lifestyle and thinking. Social networking sites were truly becoming absolute hits among the user regardless age, sex or location. Now, privacy and confidentiality are what at stake. Privacy and confidentiality are deemed important to uphold in life because these two will maintain our worth and value as a person. Besides, it is not necessary to let everyone know everything about us. Because the moment we divulge personal information when they are not asked and necessary at the same time, we make ourselves, our profile, our personality, and our life public. It is as if saying that we welcome criticisms and judgements. Certainly, we have to take care of these two. We have to know how to use these privileges so that we wouldn't suffer if we do otherwise.
Basic Ethical Issues To Consider In Social Networks There are plenty of features being offered by social networking sites (SNS) which include making your profile, finding people with mutual interests, sharing with your circles or groups, interacting with people in your groups and getting the information shared by other people. This is where issues come in. With the rise of Online Social Networking, the ethical dilemmas are growing in number including violation of privacy, misrepresentation, bullying and creepiness. When we are getting the facility of relatively unrestricted social communications, we are becoming more vulnerable to deception and scams too at the same time which has become the reason of attention for Social Networking Ethics. Few ethical dilemmas faced when we use social networks. I listed three ethical issues we have to consider before we divulge our personal information in social networks. First, Privacy. I think that social networks somehow takeaway our right to priv If the actions that break the law or terms of privacy of any user of social network harms that individuals personal or professional credibility should be considered unethical. I always experience being asked to fill up forms that require my personal information. There is also an issue on Identity Theft. Identity theft is one from many examples of ethical issues in social networking. It is a form of technique used by criminals to impersonate someones identity with intention to pursue or commit for crime. The victim will be hold to be responsible for the consequences of fraud or action done the impersonators. Identity theft on the Internet can arise in two similar yet distinct ways which are either creating a fake account or stealing and hacking the password of the victim. In previous Facebooks regulatory filing released on 2012, the social media company said that 8.7 percent (83.09 million) of its 955 million monthly active users worldwide are actually duplicate or false accounts. Despite of rapid and aggressive effort made by social networking sites to secure and protect its users from any form of online impersonation, the solution is still depends on the ethical value and proactive action from the users themselves to fully developed good understanding and self-awareness on the risk of online impersonation in social networking sites. And, the most critical is the issue on Free Speech. We may think that using social networks is something private where can express anything we want to but we are not as private as they think. Disparaging your competitors in SNS (social networking sites) is considered unethical because of its broad range of negative impacts. Once you have posted something, it is not yours anymore and it can go viral as fast as a fire in the forest without asking for your permission which then cant only affect your reputation but also the person or company you were disparaging about, so much. The aforesaid ethical issues should be taken into account because as soon as we sign up for any social media accounts, we are already one click away from being harmed. So, we should all keep ethics in front of us even while using social media.
A Letter To My Unhappy Future Wife To my dear and unhappy wife, As you first set foot on the shores of ours, my tantalizing eyes were in alacrity as they caught the fullness and brevity of your countenance. I was engrossed by your slender, brown hair, and blue eyes. I fell for your elegant simplicity with an atmosphere of light gaiety. It must be love at first sight. Memories of our first encounter are still vivid and that when you sought for medical help for your adoptive father, I thought I also had the need to ask for medical assistance to affix my heart from misbehaving. My dear, it was your panorama of paradisiacal visage. Indeed, I first loved you the first time I laid my eyes on you. Without an iota of doubt, I think I made the right choice when I confessed my feelings to you and I do hope that you do the same too. Time could attest the love that we shared together. We started our life together on cloud 9- no quarrels, always laughing happily. But, I agonize as I contemplate what really happened. Why was our love affair imperfect? What caused the strong pillars of our love nest crumble? What went wrong, my love? I thought our love was sacrosanct and inviolable. Or so I thought. I even came to the point where I thought that our love is mundane and that the love at first sight that I felt when I saw you the first time guaranteed a shot- term love story. But, I was wrong. It only came into my consciousness that I wronged you. I wronged the one whose love for me is as high as Mt. Everest, as wide as the Pacific Ocean, and as deep as the Mariana Trench. And today, as I set foot away from you, I long for your kiss. I want to touch your lips again. Send me back to your loving arms again. It's crystal clear that we've been through rapids these past few days. The feeling of guilt is decisive and I can't endure not expressing said feeling, hence this letter. As I journey, my mind and heart stays with you in my dear homeland. I would like to illuminate through these hopeful words the love I have for you. I may see numerous beautiful sceneries with the journey I am about to kick off but your face would remain the most beautiful scenery I would forever love to look at. As I venture for self- growth and fruitful experience, I vow to extend my love, care and longing for you. And I can't wait to come home again and reacquaint our hearts that, lately, have been strangers to each other. I love you, my sweet foreigner, my darling, my delight. With so much love, Jake
Inutile This is what the Philippines has become when it comes to the teritorrial dispute that it has with China regading the West Philippine Sea or South China Sea. During his 5th State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Rodrigo Duterte once again admitted he could not afford to go to war against China in asserting the Philippines’ sovereignty in the South China Sea. "We have to go to war. And I cannot afford it. Maybe some other president can but I cannot. Inutil ako diyan. Talagang inutil ako diyan. Walang magawa [I’m useless when it comes to that. Really, I’m useless to that. I can’t do anything]. I cannot,” the President said. With that being said, we lost the fight without even going to the "battlefield". While we do acknowledge the threat that a possible war poses, is war our last bastion of hope? Every thing boils down to the fact that legally speaking, we own that sea. We actually won the international suit at the Permanent Court Arbitration (PCA) in 2016. However, the problem is that China does not recognize this arbitration award. Ironic but we seem to be the losers when we are supposed to be the victors, and now, we are sharing it without the assurance of its property. See, we have legal basis on claiming it as ours but we as one nation are passive and do not mind to foist it upon an intransigent China. Well, who would dare to pull the trigger? Our president himself, who once promised to ride on a jet ski and put up the Philippine Flag in one of the islands in the disputed sea, does not want to pull the trigger either. No one would dare for the future of the country could be either the prize or the price. The prize if we keep meeking and licking the shoes of China wherein we lose ourselves, and the price if we insist our claim yet we lose a great friendship with the risen country which has the world's second largest economy and military to date. Uphold our claim but prepare for a nightmare, or befriend China but lose our integrity? Hence, prize or price, we would be at the losing end point of either of these two. But there is this last option for us with the best promise: We maintain a healthy relationship with China but claim what is ours. While it is true that we are a friend of China, it doesn't necessarily mean that we are going to adjust our constitution, adjust our teritorrial rights solely for the idea that we are in alliance with them. So what can we actually do? We have the UN and the ASEAN to back us up. But, they will do nothing if we don't initiate. Other countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia are asserting their sovereign rights to their maritime zones against China's claims... and here we are silent about the issue. Others argue that we don't have the means to engage to war. This is actually an insult to our national heroes because they did not also have enough warfare equipment during their time. It was carved in history that Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio did not waiver their claims just because they did not have enough warfare equipment. Besides, a country does not have to go to war to assert its sovereign rights. We should maintain our professional relationship with China while claiming what is rightfully ours. Claiming what is rightfully ours does not insinuate fear or tension. We are simply abiding by our legal frameworks and by the decision of the international court. And this is what China has to fathom. The perk of being a friend to China could be the investments and development assistance that they give us. Good to hear but it does not worth the price. If we remain mum on this issue, if we remain a puppet of China due to the economic benefits that we get from them, then what are we really as an independent country? This is no longer about the reefs, shoals, and banks in the disputed sea, more than these is a question of our national sovereignty and integrity. The moment our President said that he is inutile, our rights over the islands in the disputed sea became USELESS.#
Moppet's Dictum One, two, three Until when shall I count for thee? Should I wait for February to have its 30? Or should I wait for the bees to lose its honey? My dear brethren, We clamor for peace and unity Yet we confine ourselves with vulgarity And stain our hands with impurity. Wake up! Open your eyes! Your blinded eyes from the world sublime Lustrous treasure, alluring fame Take heed for it will eat you like a snake. To my fella younglings, In swelling waves we are sailing Keep our faith steadfast and unwavering For we hold hereafter and things therein. A face of patriotism We say we love our country Notwithstanding the deeds for the lowly Stunning facade of a spirit so haughty.
The Story of the Carrot, the Egg, and the Coffee Bean A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word. In about twenty minute she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out, she pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee into a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me what you see?” “Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied. She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, “What’s the point, mother?” Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity…boiling water – but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after being through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed the water. “Which are you?” she asked the daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?”
Little Things that Matter Life is short. The world is aging. Time is fleeting. Some little things I often forget to enjoy are the simple moments that I have with my parents. I am a family- centered individual. Everything I do is for them. However, as I grow older, I become more and more busy and my attention is gradually diverted to other things. This, oftentimes, make me overlook and miss the little things that I should enjoy with my parents. When I was a child, I would always sleep beside my mother who would always embrace me and sing me a lullaby. Now, I no longer sleep beside her. Everytime I have a conversation with my father, I don't usually take time to enjoy it. Because of studies and social media, it seems like I am already missing the little things that I used to enjoy when I was still young. I want to accentuate here that family meals could be a little thing for it's been part of our daily routine. But, I often forget to enjoy it. It is for a reason that lately, I have been waking up late and have been going home late, thus having no chance to join them during mealtime. I would also like to share how loving my mother is. Everytime I go to school or whenever I go somewhere, she would always accompany me waiting for transportation. She would always offer me a food before she offers it herself. She would always ask me where I am and scold me for not letting her know about my whereabouts. These are little things that I often forget to enjoy. Now, I realize that life is short, the world is aging, and time is fleeting. Hence, I should appreciate these little things... little things that matter.
Better Life I am a simple man with big dreams. I come from a poor family. I am never ashamed of this. However, I always believe that it's not actually what you are given, but what you do with what you are given. In my case, considering our plight due to financial reasons, I am determined to change the way we live. I remember when I was a child, my nanang would always tell me to study hard so that when I'm already finish studying, I could be a dentist to address and complete her three-seat-apart teeth, thus, she wanted me to be a doctor. Since then, I thought of becoming a doctor. However, the love for science was not really established in me, hence, I went off that track. Now, I am currently on my way to becoming a teacher. Aside from that, I would also like to take up Law after getting a stable job as a teacher. Moreover, I would like to continue being a journalist while doing other tasks. See, I have a lot of dreams. Big dreams that are blur as of the moment. But, I am determined to achieve them. There are a lot of uncertainties in life. But, with faith, determination, perseverance, humility, and passion, I am willing to take risks to make our life better. Now, I have realized that my mother's point way back then was for me to strive to be successful so that one day, I could treat not her teeth but our life and save it from deteriorating. She wanted me to study hard so that I could insert not false teeth but hope to our living. That's why I dream that one day, I would be able to make her proud by being successful. I want to be successful someday to repay them. By hook or by crook, I would do everything to give them what they deserve: a better life.
This is a post with high hopes to inspire and motivate you, my fellow Filipino writers. You have great stories to tell. You are great. Keep going!
Beautiful Scars People see me as strong, fearless, noisy, ecstatic. But, what was there behind those smiles, laughters, victories, and aplomb? Something few people realize about me is that I have a lot of insecurities. Most of the time, I doubt my capablities, I doubt my strengths, I doubt my worth. I am always wondering if I could really do a certain task. I'm impulsive when it comes to decision making for I am afraid of failures. I have inner demons. People always congratulate me for winning various contests. They always congratulate me for being confident enough to articulate well myself. Little do they know that I was in fact nervous speaking in front. I was actually shaking inside knowing that anytime I could utter an inappropriate word that might make me fail. People always appreciate my communication skills especially when I am hosting different events. Little do they know that I was actually insecure with my pronuciation and enunciation knowing that the moment I would fail, others may immediately criticize me. Others always tell that I am intelligent but I know I sometimes lack wisdom. I sometimes or always fall short when it comes to practical and real- life situations. In short, I have a lot of insecurities. They don't see my monsters inside. They don't see my pain. All they see is the victory that I achieve, the medals that I receive, the grades that I get. But, behind those laurels are insecurities, the monsters that I always battle with. In spite of these scars, it is when I remember the strong support system that I have, those people who always believe in me that I am encouraged to fight these monsters inside me and chase them all away. The battlefield always leaves me scars, but these scars are indeed beautiful.
The Hows and Whys of Facing Life's Problems Encumbrance of predicaments. Life has it. It has been indispensable for anyone to carry burdens of life. Everyone faces battles which are different from one another. No one is excused from dealing with problems that life has to give. Yet, given these manifestations, it only depends on each one of us how to look and deal with them holding on to the reasons that keep us going. These are lucidly implied in the story of the carrot, the egg, and the coffee beans. To give a little context, they are subjected to the same stimulus (boiling water) but they reacted differently. Akin to our situation as humans whose existence is bound for a bumpy ride due to life's naturally occurring problems, there is a fine line that seperates us from each other that results to our different reactions- personal differences. For this article, I would like to reflect on how and why do we react differently. I have two arguments, one anchored on our "nature", the other is based on our "nurture" process. On my first point, it is against the sun to argue that each of us is unique. We were born in such a way that we are genetically distinct from one another. In short, it's all about nature. Just like the three characters in the story, the carrot, the egg, and the coffee beans are all of different nature. I have learned that, likewise, our nature as a person is an index of why and how we react in a certain way. As for me, I am an optimistic person that's why I look at the brighter sides of problems. If one person is sensitive or/ and pessimistic, he or she will definitely breakdown. The maturity level of a person could also be given attribution as to why and how someone deals with the problem that way. In my experience, I have already gone through many problems, the reason why and how I reacted in a certain way I did was because I believe that everything has a purpose. Whatever problem that comes is actually a challenge that gives way to an opportunity. On the other hand, why and how we react differently when we deal with problems are also greatly impacted by "nurture" or how we are nurtured by our environment. We come from various walks of life. Our experiences in life have molded us to be who and what we are right now. These having been said supports the idea that the process of being raised and molded and the place where we undergo such definitely matter. I grew up with my loving and supportive parents who never judged me. Personally, my greatest problem since my earlier life is my gender. I am gay. This three- word sentence gives me a lot of problems, issues, dilemmas, whatever you call it. People judge me because I'm gay. They have been connecting my decisions to my gender even if it's already irrelevant. But, I have become strong. In spite of the society I am living in, I have managed to face problems and turn these into challenges and opportunities. I am lucky for I also have a positive and an encouraging support system which has become my life vest. To connect it to the story of the carrot, the egg, and the coffee beans, we should not judge those who are "carrot" and "coffee beans" because just like what I said, we come from different environments and different families. Whichever we are, it's always the end that matters. Yes, as much as possible, we should be like the egg who is hardened by problems of life, thus becomes strong. However, I am sure that we couldn't always be like it. There would always be a point in our life where we become the carrot or the coffee bean even if we wouldn't like to. Yet, despite this, we should never give up. As we face various circumstances, we could always cope with what we have become and eventually improve. The carrot amidst being softened could still taste good and make a certain food delicious. And, the coffee bean amidst losing its solid state could still give the best aroma and best taste for a coffee. See, whichever of the three have we become at certain points of our life, it's always how we turn everything into our advantage that makes the difference. Indeed, we fight our own battles. Whoever we are, whichever we choose to be, may it be a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean, remember that victory comes only to those who don't give up.

English and Filipino Languages How English gained status in global, will the Filipino language have a chance to be a global language? English as the unassailable global language arises mainly due to the political and economic power of its native speakers. Historically, it was British imperial and industrial power that popularized English around the globe between the 17th and 20th Century. The legacy of British imperialism has left a lot of counties with the language thoroughly institutionalized in their courts, parliament, civil service, schools and higher education establishments. Also, it has been largely the white people's influence in songs, videosand television, business and finance, technology; even drugs and pornography that has consolidated the position of the English language as it continues to reign today. On the other hand, the chance of Filipino language to be a global language is relatively low since a) its native speakers does not really advance its usage and they often neglect the use of it, b) the authorities do not give a solid support to it evident with the CHED directive No. 20 excluding Filipino subjects in college, c) there are other factors to be considered which Filipino language is yet to fulfill such as the total count of countries using it as their first language, adopting it as their official language, and teaching it as their foreign language of choice in schools. The intrinsic structural qualities of a language, the size of its vocabulary, the quality of its literature throughout history, and its association with great cultures or religions, are all essential factors in the popularity of any language. In the end, the quest of Filipino language to grow as a global language lies to the political and economic will of its speakers who should be decisive to put it in the global centerstage.
Globalization: Boon or Bane? The global community has reached a point that sets ties and connection between and among nations as a necessity for one's safety and sustainability. Globalization, since its outset, has changed the way things were, expanding the view of diverse peoples. It has impacted national economies and so, each nation is now able to augment its financial status which it can use to suffice the needs of its consitituents. With globalization, distance lost its significance in a sense that people of distinctive homelands can now communicate despite of such odd, thanks to Facebook, Yahoo and G- Mail, and the likes. Multinational associations such as the United Nations have helped alot in uplifting the developong nations' status, hence Philippines one of these developing nations owes much to globalization. In supplementation, globalization expands the view of a nation to the manifoldness of peoples' civilization beyond confines, celebrating commonality and uniqueness. The answer as to which globalization is between boon and bane depends on the part of the globe you stand on, thus, as a Filipino citizen I say that globalization is a boon.
Endangered "When you start using illegal drugs, you start destroying yourself." The threat of illegal drugs is decisive, and it’s closer than we think. In our country,, the drug-abuse situation has actually increased over the years. llegal drugs have taken the spotlight. It is already evident that many are actually getting high with these. And, what's more palpitating is the fact that the perilous addiction and use of such drugs have already penetrated and are now lurking the walls of the academic institutions. This is alarming. Let the figures speak. According to report of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the police have caught over 1,300 children aged 17 years and below for their alleged involvement in illegal drugs in the year 2018. News reports have it that students themselves confessed that they did use illegal drugs, and that there were actually cases where students were caught bringing with them illegal drugs and probably, they might had also used such in school. Imagine, students who are drug- users. This is sad. On the other hand, young people are also used as "drug runners". Probably this is because the adults think that authorities are not really suspicious of the youngsters and that children could escape from the law and cannot be jailed. Young people are using illegal drugs. Young people are "used". Young people harm and are harmed. These are the status quo. Now, what does this implicate? Primordially, the schools are no longer safe because there are already students who are not just getting high grades but also getting high with drugs. Having this said, their classmates are just one step away from being harmed or worse, the students who are using drugs are just a step away from harming themselves. Who would know if one day, students might be addicted so much with illegal drugs to the point of losing themsves? Secondly, with the presence of such act of students, the parents of illegal drug users failed to fulfill their mission of guidance. Yes. They seem to forget asking how is their child doing, is he okay, is every thing alright? This actually triggers this illicit doing of some students. When the parents begin losing time for their children, they begin losing them, and possibly, at that juncture, illegal drugs could be waving at them. I know this because I see and I care. And you, our parents should know better. And thirdly, as the age of illegal drug users continue to descend, the nation is being jeopardized as these marijuana, cocaine, ecstacy, and other forms, destroy the very hope of the land, we, the youth. If we are thought to be the builders of a better society someday, I doubt if it would be made possible if many of us would grow as drug- users. Let us be reminded of the fact that drugs cause ripple effect which push people to commit other crimes- murder, rape, abuse, to name a few. Imagine, the hope of our nation doing all of these things due to illegal drugs. What kind of society would that be? Well, it does not differ with the generation of today where crimes are perpetuated, and the root is said by President Duterte to be the use of illegal drugs. All of these things ought to seek empathy from other social strands, a call for collective action in addressing this social illness where the future of the future is what at stake. Of course, from a point- of- view of a student, I do not condemn nor tolerate this juvenile issue because I am not in the position to judge them or those who are yet to use, hopefully none. Besides, at the end of the day, we, young people, students in particular are victims on this matter and are just misled. Users are victims of lack of guidance or misguidance, and unsafe society where drugs are ubiquitous and accessible. In this regard, I have to ask, with the wake of War on Drugs of our govenment, does that serve as a deterrent to us or a stimulus for us to be more curious and worse, try it, somehow? Yet, regardless of the answer to this question, one thing is clear. I, in behalf of all the young people, call for a safer and a more secured environment where these illegal drugs do not have a space. This can only be done if you, as our elders partake in this not- so- child-friendly war on drugs. Because as long as there are old and mature enough people who are using illegal drugs, don't expect younger people to subdue to what you say is illegal. We ask you, the old people, to lead by example. We now reach the point where the use of illegal drugs is no longer just the issue of old and mature people, it is becoming ours. And, this is a nightmare. Only when we wake up from this nightmare that we, students and young people, can grow and thrive successfully maximizing our potentials and be someone you aspire us to be. May we imbibe in our minds that illegal drugs are not and never our friends.
