I am publishing another article about my answers to my professor's questions and instructions. I hope you won't mind.
In this article, it will be about the Principles of Management. Take your time & let's get started.
SITUATION: The President of a medium-sized manufacturing company is due for retirement in three months. The board of Directors of the company is considering the next highest rank manager, the Senior Vice President is a corporate lawyer who joined the company ten years previously and assisted the president in the external affairs area, e.g. dealing with government tariff and regulatory bodies, suppliers, and some government accounts.
Questionsto Answer:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of appointing this person as president?
In the statement, it is said that the board of Directors already had their eyes on the spotlight of the Senior Vice President, meaning they saw potential in him also considering he is in the highest rank of managers. I see advantages and just a few disadvantages. He assisted the President in some agendas, too, which makes him more appropriate to the position because he already saw and been in the scene of what a president should be doing. Plus, he is a corporate lawyer, and that is a significant credential too. On the other side, the disadvantage I think will be his confidence and competency. Giving the position of presidency in a company requires a lot of pressure and responsibilities. I guess the burden is that he may not be ready for the job yet, but he can work things out. The disadvantage would be the adjustments he will make as soon as he is appointed.
Is it necessary for a person to start at the lowest levels of an organization and gradually move upwards to become an effective chief executive in that organization? Justify your answer and give example.
The possibility of being promoted into a higher position is 100%. But, it doesn’t usually happen when an employee suddenly moved upwards or gets enabled to be the chief executive. It does happen but not too often. It was not necessary for me, especially when there are much more deserving of having the position. Yet, if the person who got promoted into that kind of work was worthy enough and can prove his/her intellectual capacity, confidence, and competency all in one, then go on be the chief executive.
An example of this is our current president, President Duterte, who came from being just a City Mayor but suddenly ran for the presidency and won. Imagine leading a city, and then just a few steps, you see yourself leading a country. Now, he faces both positive and negative feedback. Some appreciate his work and admire him for how flexible he is in conducting and managing a city to now a country. Also, negative feedback tells him how incompetent he is because he cannot lead 100 million Filipinos. They say he doesn’t deserve the position, and someone else has to sit in there just because he was only a Mayor back then. I am pointing out this when I say it is not necessary to just put someone into a position he cannot correctly handle. Some will appreciate it, but some will not. It depends on how people see your work and not how you do them.
Is the President of a country a manager? Yes or NO and justify your answer. Choose a particular president and discuss how such a person is or is not a manager.
Leading a country is also like being a manager in a workplace. You have to monitor your unit or team, like how a President should watch over his countrymen. You have to lead your team and tell them how they should work together, just like how a President commands the government officials what to do and what to work for. You always have to update your reports about the work done by your team, just like how a President speaks on national TV, telling the accomplishments and plans within his administration. Therefore, yes, a President of a country is also a manager, but the more involved audience and team to lead.
President Rodrigo Duterte is a manager. Why? As a manager in a workplace or a company, he shows an entire unit and a country with 100 million and more people. Like a manager who gives an order to his team, the President also has a team composed of different government organizations that help him do his job as a country leader well done. We are all aware that a manager wrote reports regarding the weekly or monthly tasks finished and accomplished by his/her team. Yet, the President of the country also managed to do this in a more formal and increased number of audiences, known State of the Nation Address (SONA). President Duterte just had his SONA last July 27 this year. There, he laid out achievements and projects finished by his administration and the country's accomplishments throughout his reign. This is an example of considering the President of a country a manager too.
