I wrote about a talented singer called Yohani.

Yohani is a young singer from Sri Lanka who became famous over the last two-plus years. Yohani's "Manike Mage Hithe" song became viral on the Internet. People started singing and dancing to the music.

There were several language adaptations of the "Manike Mage Hithe" song. Yohani became a celebrity around the world.

Even during the early days of the so-called pandemic, during the fourth quarter of 2020, Yohani traveled to India for two live programs. She toured several other countries in 2021. Yohani has been touring in the current year also.

Cross refer to my article, Music is Peace: "Yohani Sings" which details the story of the talented Sri Lankan singer Yohani.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island nation in the Indian Ocean

Sri Lanka is a small island nation in the Indian Ocean to the south of India. It has just over twenty million population.

Sri Lanka attracts tourists from the entire world because of its scenic beauty. The country earns a good amount of foreign currency from tourism.

Sri Lanka also has some agricultural land where farmers grow rice, wheat, vegetables, and other crops. The hilly areas are full of tea plantations. Sri Lanka exports tea to foreign nations.

There were no tourists during the pandemic years (2020, 2021)

The last two-plus years of pandemic-induced lockdowns affected the global tourism business. Sri Lanka was no exception. The income from tourism was nil.

Since tourism is one of the largest sources of foreign currency earning for Sri Lanka, the non-functional tourism industry due to lockdowns hit badly on the economy of the country.

The common citizens of Sri Lanka used to get indirect income from tourism. Therefore, the lockdowns severely affected the daily livelihood of the Sri Lankan citizens.

Yohani's country Sri Lanka is in a deep economic crisis

Sri Lanka has been in deep economic trouble due to long-time negative governance by a family of politicians. The country has been ruled by two brothers from a single RAJAPAKSA family - one is the President, and the other one is its Prime Minister.

Several of their other RAJAPAKSA family members and relatives are in the parliament and hold top administrative positions.

  • The President and Prime Minister brothers duo took important policy decisions inside their family and implemented those policies in the parliament.

  • For example, in 2019, the duo brothers' government suddenly enforced a hundred percent organic agricultural policy without having any discussions with the farmers.

  • Under its new policy, the Sri Lankan government stopped importing chemical fertilizer from foreign countries.

The farmers were not prepared to go for a hundred percent organic farming for all crops. As a result, the agricultural yields in 2020 and 2021 were poor. The farmers suffered a big loss in their agricultural income.

Over to that, the so-called pandemic-induced lockdowns resulted in nil business in the tourism industry sector.

Bringing it altogether

Sri Lanka's foreign currency reserve is nil.

  • There is an acute shortage of petroleum products, including oil and fuels.

  • There is a shortage of food items, such as rice, wheat, cooking oil, etc.

  • Citizens are crying for food, cooking oil, and daily utilities.

The Sri Lankan government has requested all foreign airlines not to fill oil in the Sri Lankan airports.

The Sri Lankan government is having a huge debt to many neighboring nations.

  • No nation will give interest-free loans to Sri Lanka. India and a very few nations agreed to provide help with medicines.

  • To pay salaries to the employees, the government has been printing more money notes resulting in high inflations.

Citizens have been protesting on the streets. They captured the Presidential residence. Many military and police personnel have joined the protests with the citizens. Former cricket player Sanath Jaisuriya was seen among the protesters.

Sri Lanka is now facing a civil war, or even worse!

Postscript

My heart bleeds for Sri Lanka's economic crisis.

  • Yohani has been putting sincere efforts into attracting financial help from foreign nations.

  • I have a Sri Lankan friend with whom I studied in Japan. I had a telephonic conversation with my Sri Lankan friend in 2019. Now, I couldn't contact him. My messages remain unanswered on LinkedIn.

Nobody knows how and when Sri Lanka will get back to normalcy.

I appreciate the courage of the Sri Lankan citizens who raised massive protests. Better late than never. Global citizens must protest against the wrongdoings of the governments.

It is very sad what is happening in Sri Lanka, the powerful really don't care about the people and their people, like the president and the prime minister, some will come to an end.

People have to be careful while casting votes in elections. And every citizen must cast their vote.

It's hard time for Sri Lanka but now we can hope or expect something better because the nation gathered up and rose up against the luxurious life of corrupted PM and President who also leave the Sri Lanka. Protest is right of the public and they do. This time will pass slowly and Sir Lanka will be out of economic crisis and wil rose up as a strong nation. Thanks God, SriLankan nation wake up, i am also praying for the Sub-continent that their public wake up and put corrupted leader out of country who are living luxurious life with the taxes of common people.

Let us hope. We must exercise our voting power.

Really, Did you think our vote matter in Sub-continent?

$ 0.01

Yes, it matters. Some foolish voters blindly believe the corrupt candidates. But, the main reason is that many citizens don't cast their votes, either out of frustration or due to fear of violence.

I reviewed several voting booths during the last few years. Voters in the polling booths are decreasing every year. And, the ruling political parties easily utilize the opportunity to cast massive proxy votes in the electronic voting machines. Actual voters visiting the polling booths to cast their vote are hardly 50 percent, and the news portal reports above 90 percent of voting! How then can it happen? The only possibility is proxy voting inside the polling booths!

i agree with you, did you know why voters are not going to cast their vote? Because most of us know that our vote have no value because the PM and CM will be selected by establishment not by our votes.

PM and CMs are selected from the winning candidates by the winning political parties.

The problems are here:

(1) Most of "us" think, "what is the value of a single vote?"

(2) "We" are influenced by pre-poll "paid" analyses by the mainstream news media.

(3) "We" are influenced by the fearmongering tactics of the ruling political parties.

(4) "We" don't go to the polling booth to cast "our" votes.

(5) As a result, "We" indirectly provide "full support" to the corrupt politicians.

I saw what happened recently in Sri Lanka... the crisis has been hard for everyone after some stupid new laws imposed by those stupid globalist plans (reducing the options for farmers etc...) In Netherlands people are angry too and blocking the country. Violence never good but normal people have to defend their interests and lives against the elite who seems they want starved people, incredible.

Protests against corruption are inevitable. One or two good leaders (and humans) who may take the lead from the front may yield positive change.

Yes, that is. And let's hope some good changes will help humans.

I don't understand why they have to be governed by one family there. I love Sri Lankas people because they teach so many things about the bible which I have met online. Is that family long been governing, for how many years?

The best is yet to explode in Sri Lanka but chaos needs to happen so to balance the scale of power and belief. We need things that will shaken us so we can move forward with authentic care from leaders and those in authority. Greed and selfishness will not last long, we have seen it happening worldwide, it will not last long.

Sri Lanka has been under this family rule for decades! Many other nations have been under the family rule for some time in the past.

Greed drives almost everything on this planet for a long time. And unfortunately, it will remain forever. The good citizens have to fight the evils with conviction and courage. There is no alternative.

Seeing what is unfolding in Sri Lanka is really tragic, I hope it doesn't result to anarchy.

It now depends on the citizens' willpower and a real leader to channel the collected force. The person should be physically and mentally fit and who can lead the citizens from the front.

This is what I have heard in the news, the Sri Lankan prime minister decided to resign which is I think the best thing because the political dynasty will end. My heart also bleeds for the economy of Sri Lanka, I can really relate from this because Philippines is a third world country.

I hope there is hope for us third world countries, it seems like poverty is destined for us.

We, the common mass (voters), must exercise our voting rights more sincerely and cautiously. If we vote for corrupt rich politicians, the results will never differ from Sri Lanka.

I can relate to these situations very well. In our country, India, winning elections by large-scale rigging with the help of muscle and money power is very common. But why the voters didn't protest? The time is not far away to see such mass protests by the suffering citizens in many other parts of the world.

This is really heart wrenching watching Shri Lankan citizens suffer from a political dynasties effects.. I hope they'll recover at least for people to survive.

We hope that the Sri Lankan citizens will get an opportunity to live a sustainable life soon. The voters around the world MUST exercise their voting rights judiciously and sincerely. Because of the callousness of the voters, the corrupt people win elections after elections.

Sri Lanka's situation is the result of poor governance of leaders, it's sad that the family of corrupt governs the country for decades and doesn't bring any progress on economy, instead they borrow money from China and other foreign nations that leads to more debts that their country need to pay. It's great that the long governance of family had been stopped, I was hoping that they will build a new government which the citizen had the voice in making decisions.

Even if the corruption is not from a family, the corrupt politicians have allies in every sector, such as celebrities in the film and music world, writers, so-called famous social workers, retired police and military personnel, and so on. The voters are charmed by their heroes in different fields.

The role of the people is vital because they vote for the politicians in power. Will the voters take some courage to exercise their voting rights?

As long as the politics revolves around family name or some caste name the work for which they are appointed, there's high possibility they will fail. Now, for Indian President post the hype of one woman named Draupadi Murmu is going on and the sole thing which I hear about her is that she is a Adivasi. It will be a big and proud moment for every lower caste people and women if she wins, but I would be more interested in her previous achievements, qualifications or future planning which rarely people discuss. She is from the same city in which I love she did some good work for her people. But what about the middle class people. Politics with this play only focuses on a particular group of people completely ignoring the others.

Although India seems to be far away from the extreme situations in Sri Lanka, there are undercurrents in the citizens' minds. I often hear people discussing Sri Lank's crisis daily and reiterating, "We Indians also should protest against the corrupt ministers."

Just look at the frequent price hikes of food and daily utilities. The price increases by 20 to 40 percent almost every four to six months! The ministers' daily allowances increase at a steady rate, but the income of the people decreases!

This is really heart wrenching. There's a phrase agriculture is the backbone of the country because of that loss plus tourism nil income made their economy bear such a huge loss. Hats off for your generous country. I pray for them. Literally i felt very bad for such a beautiful country.

By the way i have seen the clip in which salman khan was trying to sing with yohani too. Yeah that was such a beautiful song still it's lovely to be hear although I don't understand the lyrics.

The main problem is that citizens vote some X or Y as Prime Minister or President without deep consideration. The rulers can do many good things, but most nations have the most corrupted people in power!

You can get Yohani's viral song's lyrics meanings on the Internet.

Yes, the after-effect of the lockdowns is coming into the picture.

In countries like Sri Lanka, where top administrative positions, such as President, Prime Minister, etc., are held by members of the same wealthy family, the GDP is low, and inflation is super high.
