Knowledge and wisdom are priceless, and that is why great companies spend a lot of money to hire people who have the experience to head a sector in the company or to give them advice.
I'm sure that we all must have heard of the saying that "knowledge is power". Well, it is, and it is never a wrong saying.
Knowledge is like a bomb, for knowledge to be useful it has to be accompanied by action, just like a bomb has to be triggered for it to explode.
Lesson from King Solomon
I never ceased to be amazed by the story of King Solomon; who had the option to make a wish that would be granted by God. He didn't ask for wealth, peace in his land, or the death of his foes but he asked for wisdom.
Many times I have found myself praying for money, and most times those prayers get answered (of course, they materialize by God blessing my hard work or using people to bless me). But when I finally get the money, most times I don't know how the money flies.
Then I realize that money without the knowledge of how to use it is useless.
Starting today, I wouldn't be praying for money or material wealth only but for the wisdom on how to make and use the money I want.
Wisdom is the key to everything in life, without it, you can't succeed in any field you choose.
Your success isn't by accident. The knowledge you have is what you use to write, speak and behave. If you have the wisdom of a Professor you would think like one, talk like one and solve a problem like one.
Wisdom, Knowledge and Understand
But let's break down the three words: Wisdom, knowledge, and Understanding.
According to the Oxford dictionary, knowledge can be defined as facts or information, or skills acquired by practical or theoretical means.
While wisdom is the noun of the word "wise". Your level of wisdom is the accumulation of the knowledge you have and how you apply it.
You can have a lot of knowledge but that might not necessarily translate to you being wise. What you do, say or write with the knowledge you have is what will make people consider you wise. But to become wise you need to gather knowledge.
For instance, I know a particular word and its meaning, but the way I use that particular word in a sentence or speech shows my level of wisdom in using words.
So where does understanding comes in?
Understanding is the ability to comprehend knowledge.
Knowledge can be knowing that:
"15 divided by 3 equals 5."
But understanding is knowing why the answer is equal to 5.
You see, there are a lot of people with certain knowledge, but with little or no understanding of how it works. Bear in mind that you acquire knowledge of something either theoretically or practically.
Memorization versus Understanding
Most knowledge we learn in today's world comes from memorization of a certain pattern. Memorization is a very fast but poor way to learn.
As a student, I have found myself memorizing things especially when exams are close. In a case where I memorized how a problem is being solved, and when I face such a question I repeat the pattern and solve it.
Memorizing has scaled me through some difficult courses, but it sometimes comes with a price. After writing the exam, I find out that I don't know how to solve such questions when I come across them later in the future, this makes me relearn something I had learned before.
From the picture above we can see that Memorization is the gathering of information represented by the dots, but understanding connects the individual information and makes them whole.

This is exactly why I try to understand something instead of memorizing it. When I know I'm learning something in order to improve my skills, I don't care how long it takes but I will try to understand it first before moving on to other things. The truth about exams (theoretical exams) in school is that they only test your memory, not your intelligence.
And intelligence simply means being able to understand and grasp concepts and using that understanding to solve problems in the real world. Schools mostly examine you based on what you have been taught but not on how to use those things in the real world, that's why you see people memorizing their notes and forgetting what they learnt after the exam
