“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28”
When we heard the word broken, what instantly comes to our mind?
Will you accept broken things?
Are you willing to be broken?

Brokenness…
Most of the time, when we hear the word broken, we automatically think of something that is useless and worthless. When we have broken things in our house, our initial response is to throw it away and buy new ones. Only few people will find ways to fix it. Personally, whenever I broke my things, I will never try to waste my time mending it. Why use my energy in putting it back together if I could just get a new one, right?
But did you know? In some culture, especially in Japanese, it is not their behaviour to just throw things away just because it loses its beauty or became messy. They have this Japanese art called Kintsugi.
A Kintsugi is an art of mending broken things or pottery pieces back together with the use of gold. This art aims to promote accepting and embracing someone’s flaws or imperfections. And I believe that this is the best illustration for my topic about finding beauty in brokenness.
Human as we are, we are carrying a lot of things that weren’t meant for us to carry in the first place. We love making things complicated and getting stressed over the smallest things. Well, I cannot blame you for that, as what I have said, we are humans. We make mistakes, we fail, we succeed, we stumble, we get up, we smile, we cry and we breakdown. We aren’t perfect; we commit a lot of lapses in our lives. But what makes me adore humans despite of our flaws? It is our ability to stand up and view things with a silver lining no matter how dark the skies are. And I am hoping that just like how we choose to find the brighter side in every situation, we may also learn how to see ourselves as a beautiful creation despites of our cracks, deformity, imperfections, messes and brokenness.

Brokenness is inevitable; no human is living in this imperfect and cruel world that never experienced such thing. Once in our lifetime, we will definitely undergo this stage and process. However, we should also remember that nothing stays broken forever, except for the things or people that choose to stay that way and decline to be fixed.
Anyways, I wanted to focus this article right now about finding the beauty in our brokenness. I wanted to show you that there is hope no matter how hopeless you are. That there is light, despite of the darkness you are in. That broken things can still function. And sometimes, being broken also means that we are growing. Just like how essential the pruning is, in order for the plant to be more fruitful than before. Sometimes, we just need to experience being hurt for us to be strong.
But I just want you to know that not everyone can fix the brokenness we are feeling inside. Some might just make it worst. That is why, it is very crucial for us to know where we should really run in times like this. Just like in Kintsugi’s art, only the artist could turn those broken pottery into something beautiful. In our case, it is only our Creator than can mend our broken hearts and spirit and turn it into something more beautiful than before.

Just like the verse above, remember that what you are facing right now will never stay forever. God will eventually turn things around and you will be surprised that all the things that are happening to you are actually for your own good. Those struggles and problems will just vanish away as you step in to the next chapter of your life.
Nothing stays the same forever. You will not stay broken for the rest of your life. You just need to trust your creator and artist.
I remembered my heart with the word broken. That even my goddaughter who was only 3 years old, I thought her that my heart was broken. Now she remembers me as her godmother who has a broken heart. 😔
