Yesterday was the "International Mother Earth Day" and it is an appropriate occasion to reflect on what we are doing to care for and preserve our environment, which is our home and is suffering more and more every day due to the devastating consequences of pollution and our unconservationist actions.
Even when we can take some "basic" care such as taking advantage of natural resources, not wasting water, making good use of energy, among other actions, it is necessary to ask ourselves if all these actions we are undertaking are enough, or even if we can do something more to make a difference.
While we cannot take care of the entire planet, we can take responsibility for the space that corresponds to us, starting with the place where we live, including not only the home but also the neighborhood, the city and eventually the country. If we were all aligned with this same purpose we would do great things for our planet.
And believe it or not, every little action counts, it all adds up to a healthier and more sustainable place to live. I always remember these powerful words of the Dalai Lama: "If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito".
What a phrase he gave us, do you know how really annoying it can be to sleep with a mosquito circling over you all night? Unless you're as heavy a sleeper as a bear, you know what I mean by this.
It is not necessary to belong to an association to save animals from marine pollution, or to develop some super special ecological bags, we can in each of our spaces make a difference and this is especially part of promoting awareness on this issue.
There are still many people asleep in this little blue world and it is necessary to show them by example what should be done, as well as what will happen to us in a few years if we continue on this same path abusing Mother Nature.
Humanity has been very mean in the pursuit of development and wealth. For centuries we have exploited the earth to the limit, and it is time to stop or perish in the attempt.
That is why we must understand that reversing all this damage may involve a certain amount of sacrifice, such as giving up certain comforts or undertaking new projects that involve work and effort. It can also represent a big change in the way we are used to live.
In any case, I wanted to share this reflection with you today because I have been asking myself questions all day, and I remembered a classic teaching from my parents "always put yourself in the other person's shoes before acting and don't do anything you wouldn't want done to you".
It made me wonder: What if we all put ourselves in Mother Earth's shoes, would that change the picture?
What do you think? Could you do that thoughtful exercise?
I'd love to read your thoughts in the comments.
