Answer to Quiz 27:1

There is an old riddle: “Which weighs more, one kilogram lead or one kilogram feathers?” The answer, of course, is that, although feathers are light and lead is very heavy, they weigh the same, namely one kilogram.

But how is it with this: Which weighs more, one cubic meter gold or one cubic meter lead?

Gold is denser than lead, so a cubic meter gold weighs more than a cubic meter lead. In fact, a cubic meter lead weighs 11340 kg, while a cubic meter gold weighs 19320 kg, almost the double.

This question caused some confusion, but @Aimure nailed it. I think @Tomi-Ajax knew this too, although he did not give the answer to the question.

Which versatile, Florentine 16th century artist is best known as a goldsmith and for his autobiography, which, still today, is an interesting and entertaining read?

This question was about Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571). For those being interested in this versatile artist or his time, I certainly recommend his autobiography. It has been translated to English.

Answer to Quiz 27:3

Which Empire came to its absolute end in 1453, when the Turks took Constantinople?

The right answer is the Byzantine Empire. @Tomi-Ajax provided the correct answer.

The Byzantine Empire was the eastern continuation of the Roman Empire, after its division in West Rome and East Rome. When the Ottoman Turks took it over and formed their own Empire in the area, they also wanted to connect to the Roman tradition. Mehmet II, the Sultan who conquered Constantinople in 1453, adopted the title "Kayser-i- Rûm", Caesar of the Romans.

All of you know that there is a country named Great Britain. But why is it great, where is (or was) the small Britain?

The name “Britain”, or “Brittany”, is the same as “Bretagne”, now a part of France. Greater Brittany became Great Britain, while Lesser Brittany is now called Bretagne - a peninsula inhabited people whose Celtic ancestors fled England from Germanic invasion in the Middle Ages. These Germanic peoples, Anglo-Saxons, came to stay.

“Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band” was a very famous album in its time. It still is, since it heralded many news to the pop/rock music. But who was the artist?

Given how famous this album and its creators are, it surprised me that nobody came up with the answer. “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band” was created by the Beatles (producer George Martin). It was their 8th studio album and introduced many news into pop/rock music. It's the peak of the Beatles' creativity and has influenced subsequent rock music more than maybe any other individual album. Among many other things, it was the start of what's sometimes called art rock, and it was the first time lyrics were reproduced on an album cover.

Answer to Quiz 27:6

In Norse mythology, there is a world tree, Yggdrasil; what sort of tree (what species) is it?

It's an Ash tree that upholds the universe.

Ygg is a name of the god Odin, and drasil (or drasill) means horse – so the total meaning becomes Odin's horse, which initially might have meant Odin's gallows. This might sound strange, but Odin, the highest god, once sacrificed himself by hanging himself in a tree (probably Yggdrasil [or Yggdrasill]).

In Hávamál, 138, Odin himself describes this event:

“I know that I hung on a windy tree

nine long nights,

wounded with a spear, dedicated to Odin,

myself to myself,

on that tree of which no man knows

from where its roots run.”
