Learn the Valuable Habit of Reading The love of reading is one of the best things that has happened to me. Through books, it seemed like I gained a lot of friends, been to a lot of places, have gone off on many adventures and learned a lot about the world.  Books can make the reader cry, laugh, angry, introspect, doubt systems, and form principles. Some books have inspired revolutions, toppled governments, and stirred collective resolve. The Bible, the greatest book of all time, has changed a lot of lives.

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.” – Walt Disney However, books are mere lumps of lifeless paper when it is not read. To maximize the power of books, we need to learn the valuable habit of reading.  Set a time for reading To develop a habit of reading, we need to set aside time dedicated to it. An avid reader was interviewed on a podcast I'm listening to. She discussed that she wakes up as early as 4 am just to read books. Some read in the evening before they hit the sack. Some while on their daily commute. It doesn't matter what time of the day, as long as when you set a time, you commit to it. They say that it takes at least 21 days to form a habit. Build a routine. Even when you don't feel like it, just read until you develop an appetite and fall in love with written words.  Turn off notifications on your gadgets when you're reading When you read, turn off your notification for a distraction-free experience. Let yourself loose in the world of what you're reading. Like when you're reading fiction, immerse yourself into the story. When the story gets too emotional, allow yourself to feel the emotion. When your notification gets in the way, it ruins the experience. This may seem hard if you're just starting with your reading habit, but convince yourself that it is just for a time, but the result is a lifetime.  Buy a book that you know you'll enjoy reading Sometimes we get overwhelmed with the books our friends flex on their social media accounts. Some book readers are indeed into humble bragging but most of them are just so fascinated with what they have read. You don't have to like their book preferences. You don't have to fit in their reading mold. I, for one, am not into novels. I read fiction from time to time, but it is not my cup of tea. I am more into self-help and inspirational books. I don't have to force myself to read something I know I'll not enjoy. For beginners, choose something that you'll surely enjoy: short stories, poems, graphic novels, classics, biographies, etc. Reading has to be enjoyable, not dragging and boring.  Someone has said, “If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.” It can be figurative and literal. Successful people are readers. Leaders are readers. If we want to do more in life, reading is a good place to start.  Are you a reader? I encourage you to be one!
