The back must be the most beaten up part of the body from day to day activities and habitual poor body mechanics. While, there are doctors and the physical therapists that could take care of those problems, we have to do our part on how we can avoid them. A wide range of things can cause back pain, trouble with kidneys; prostate or liver; arthritis and various infections; posture, lifestyle and even emotions!
So, what are these common causes of back pain?
1. Emotions – You must be terrified how emotions can pose a serious threat on your back, but yes it can! For example, you have big worries that nagged you for days. You will soon develop a dull backache on your upper back muscles. It sounds impossible connecting the pain from your worries. What was really happening was this: strong emotions tighten muscle - mildly tensed for several days, the muscles will simply grow tired and now you got the dull back pain. Once you stopped worrying, the muscle will cease hurting.
2. Poor habitual posture - For several years we never learned how to sit properly. You sag on overstuffed sofas and chairs, on that you may be resting, but your muscles aren’t. They’re working overtime to keep some order within the vertebrae. Your desk chair adds more horror for your back, a swivel chair with too much cushion! Day in and day out it put strains on the same set of muscles, no wonder back pain never disappears. Thus, it would be better with a straight kitchen chair.
3. Your back is not a lever - You might think that your back is a lever. Unfortunately, it’s not! Arms and legs are levers. Ideally the back should be straight because this is for posture and stability. If you keep twisting your back and putting all the load on it during lifting something heavy, that would create a serious problem to the discs.
4. Poor ergonomics - Upper back pain is common for people who works in front of the computer for long periods and can be due to wrong placement of the monitor and the desk; poor posture can also contribute to back pains. Such problem can lead to formation of nodules and tout bands on muscle fibers of your upper back or can be called as Myofascial Pain Syndrome.
4. Weight Gain - You started to gain weight – about ten extra pounds. Your lovers handle become prominent that means your abdominal muscles have been getting weaker for some time, and because of that your abdominals cannot help maintain your back’s appropriate posture, so your back muscles must carry this additional load to compensate. Incidentally, that’s why moms got back pain during pregnancy because of that extra load up front.
5. Trauma and Injury - Discs are susceptible to several kinds of injury. An auto accident, a serious fall, sport related injuries – can simply squash a disc, usually one at the bottom of the spine. This often calls major surgery. A less severe injury can rupture the disc’s envelope too, permitting that jelly to ooze out. This causes acute misery. The disc’s jelly will press on the nerve and this is why your back pain will start to radiate going to your thigh or up to your foot. And as a protective effort your back muscle will take off into spasm, this serves as a splint to prevent motion that might cause additional damage. Muscle on spasm may twist the victim out of shape, usually by bending forward.
6. Your pillow can be a culprit too! - The stiff neck that you sometimes experienced, can be traced to the stretched or inflamed muscles and ligaments that can be due to wrong positioning of the neck during sleeping. Pillows might be too firm/ hard or you might be using a lot of pillows supporting your neck while sleeping.
8. Aging - With age, bones grow weaker and calcium is draining away. The vertebrae become less dense and the discs soften. Your back now is no longer capable of taking abuse, and beginning to bend forward on a slight humpback, pain starts to creep in because of abnormal physiologic change in the back.
These are just the common causes of back pain, still proper diagnosis of what causes the pain is a doctors prerogative. But, somehow you can always start early with prevention and proper knowledge of how to take care of your back.
Unknowingly, we tend to neglect the needs of our body because we prioritize more what our life needs, that is reality! But, what if our body starts complaining?
There are countless of reasons why your back is nagging you. Are you doing something now before it comes to worse?
