Follow your passion or follow the money?

Hello everyone, how are you all doing today? Have you started feeling the chills in the air? For those of us in Nigeria, welcome to the period of the cold-dry wind blowing from the Sahara desert, our very own winter (but instead of snows, we have dust particles), say hello to the legendary harmattan 🥶

The harmattan seems to be getting worse every day, I don't mind the cold but what I hate is the usual dry and dusty air that accompanies it, it feels like the wicked elder brother of winter.

These days my throat is always dry and requires me to drink water all the time, my skin is dusty and dry as well, I just can't wait to go home for the holiday so I can always remain indoors.

But enough talks about the weather, let's dive into the topic for today. I have had an idea for this article for some days but I didn't decide on what the topic should be, but luckily for me, I saw this topic on nairaland yesterday (see it here - Discussion: Follow Your Talents And Passion Or Follow The Bag?!!!).

So, passion or money? I think it actually depends on some certain situation. The country I live in has a way of killing your passion before it even grows, and that's the reason why most people will rather follow the money.

I have seen some persons that have passion for a certain thing but they can't make a living out of it because it's something that isn't common in the area they stay. And that's another thing that comes into mind while chasing your passion; is it marketable in the area you stay?

Take for example somebody that has a passion for taking care of animals and who stays in an area that's dominated by vegetarians, is it advisable for him to still chase his passion? In this case, it will be good if he learns how to grow vegetables and sells them to get money.

Sometimes, you just have to do things you haven't done before so you can discover something you really like. Some people here didn't know they can write until they have tried it for a while and discovered they love writing and now they have turned it into their passion, but you wouldn't even know until you have tried.

Money is another thing that can motivate you to have passion for something you didn't have passion for before, an example is also some persons here who have taken up writing as a passion, they got motivated to do it because of what they are earning.

On the other hand, if your passion is something that can bring you money as well, then it's a good thing. Motivational speakers will tell you to chase your passion and the money will come but let's be realistic here, it doesn't always turn out that way.

Some persons will say their passion is football but they have never earned anything from playing so in this case we will say that they are just doing it for fun (or just call it a hobby). But some persons have been able to progress in playing football and end up playing for international clubs, but everyone isn't so lucky.

One of the things that actually kill the passion of most people is marketing; if you can't market what you love doing then you won't be successful. People have been able to get recognition for what they do through showcasing it on social media, and they earn from it.

Remember when I said money can be a motivation for developing a passion for something? Most people end up having a passion for a particular skill because they find it lucrative, but in the end, they can't make money from it because of poor marketing skills.

I have seen people that don't have passion for a profession excel in that profession and it's all because they know how to market it more than the people that truly have a passion for it.

Closing thoughts

Following your passion and doing something you enjoy while earning money from it is one of the best things in the world, but a lot of people aren't privileged to follow that route.

Because of responsibilities, most people will rather chase after money and neglect their passion which probably puts little to no food on their table. I will prefer chasing after money first if my passion isn't making me money, then I can go back to fuel my passion when I have enough money for it (that's actually what I am doing right now 😉).

So what about you, would you rather chase your passion or you will follow the money instead? Let me know in the comment section below.

Thanks for reading 💖💖💖

I will have to chase the two money and passion are both important to human life. Money is used to do alot of things. Passion is the creational zeal for something. I think the two works together 😊

Precisely, the two works together but sometimes one has to leave his passion to chase money which he will use to boost that passion later on

Just like you said, the environment you find yourself and the mentality of the people around plays a very big role in determine whether you would succeed when you follow your passion. In the west, you could choose to be anything and you would still succeed, at least you would be comfortable. But in developing countries, you might end up regretting you your earlier decision and name "village people"for making you choose something like that.

That's the reason why I pointed out that most people in Nigeria will rather chase the money, because this country has a way of killing dreams of people, so following your passion is sometimes not a great idea

I think your conclusion is actually the best. But some follow their passion and also chase after the money simultaneously..

That's also good, but focusing on only your passion when you know it isn't making you money is the bad thing here

There's an article I read in hive some days ago, talking about passion and money, it's related to each other .

The situation of things might change our passion for something else, but what if what you had passion for is not giving you the future you always dreamed of ? What if it seems you're just moving in a circle with your passion? Isn't better to divulge for another bid that will guarantee you a better future?

What one have passion for might not earn you money, but going for another bid can't stop you from doing what you had passion for , but it's gonna be In a systematic way, I'm such a fashion that you'll be doing good in both aspect. And I will say nothing but the truth, money also make one to have passion for something.

It's just like I said, sometimes what kills some people's passion is the lack of money to finance it, especially those people that have passion for something that requires large amount of money. On that case, it's better to chase after money first then you can come back later to fuel your passion when you're ready financially

I love realistic, chasing a passion that's not productive would lead to frustration, it might be good later but you might as well give up before then because of frustration. Taking here as an example, I know of a guy that was writing here before now, I must say he's damn good with constructive words, he was flowing and gathering BCH but suddenly Rusty stopped visiting him. That was when he gave up. The so called passion ran away from him. Another case again are the pastors, haven't you seen the ones that claimed "passionate" dropped out of the journey due to frustration? Lol. That's passion and money for you. Passion works with money!

Gbam! You hit the nail on the head, most times passion needs money to survive and when the money isn't coming in, most people abandon their so called passion

Ahah I was surprised by your answer. It is sincere and fast. Exactly we would go for the money first, and then with your help we will look for a show of passion. ahh

Money runs the world and at the same time it's needed to fuel most of our passion 😊

I just wrote an article asking why we work. Life has been monetized and in my case, what I studied I like but there are other things that attract me more and I would have liked to study, but I was objective with what could bring me benefits for a better quality of life.

It all boils down to what will better the quality of our life. Doing something we have passion for brings happiness but money is needed to make our lives comfortable, so if the passion isn't bring in money it's better to just change it

We must be happy in our own position. You have to take care of your position all the time. Nobody wants to see my own position, just look for money.

Our passion makes us happy, but when it doesn't make money for us it becomes better to just chase after something else that can provide money

Follow the passion I guess coz that would make you happy. Coz your passion might give you a way to find money as well.

Yes, on the long run we should all follow our passion but if our passion is something that requires money to start, I guess it will be better to follow money first then go after the passion later

It all really depends on what the situation is. But as for me, I'd choose passion over money because if I'll pursue my passion, I know it can help me make money haha
