Juan and his winged horse
A long time ago in a far distant village in the mountain, there live a beautiful couple named Maria and Arturo. The couple was just newlywed and lived in their newly built house made with woods and bamboo with a roof of cogon grass. After a few months of staying together, Maria gets pregnant. It's normal for a wife to crave something like food or fruits that sometimes were nowhere to be found especially if it is a seasonal fruit.
One night, Maria crave a pink and seedless pomelo as she specified to her husband.
"Arturo, I want to eat pomelo right now, I want the pink and seedless one" Maria nagged her husband.
"But my love how could I find a pomelo at this time, it was already about midnight, can you just wait for the morning to come then I will find you what you want?" Arturo pleads to his wife.
But Maria get mad and started to shout at Arturo.
"As if you have no care for our baby and you don't want to get what I want" Maria sobs and drops herself at the wooden bed carelessly.
Arturo get panic when he heard Maria sobbing. He quickly gets up to his feet and comforts his wife.
"Please don't cry my love, right away I will find a pink and seedless pomelo for you." He said while hugging her.
Maria smiled while wiping her tears. And hug back Arturo.
Arturo went to their kitchen and tuck his long bolo around his waist and grabbed one of the lamps. He throws a glance at his looking wife with a smile and then waves goodbye.
"Be careful my love, and be back as soon as possible with my pomelo," Maria said.
Arturo walked through the fields where some pomelo trees were planted with some other fruit-bearing trees. He was so sure that he can't find even a single pomelo fruit at that moment because it was already October and pomelo was bearing its fruits around April to June. It was very impossible to find any of it. But if he doesn't find fruit for Maria, this could be the cause of their fight and worst the miscarriage of their supposed to be first child.
Arturo was in deep thought when he suddenly fell to sleep. A lady wearing black garments from the scarf to its head to her long dress that drapes her ankles with a purple waistband made with a knitted scarf, and holding a black wooden cane approach Arturo in his dream. The lady has no sandals and seems not walking in the ground but it is floating like a curtain in the night.
Upon seeing the lady Arturo gets stunned and can't move his body. Then the lady speaks.
"Go straight to the east, in the seventh mountain, in the middle of the forest, there, you can find what you are looking for." Then the lady disappear.
Arturo hurriedly gets up to his feet catching his breath. He recall everything if it was just a dream. But one side of his brain said that all he saw and heard was true. He turns around to check his surroundings, but no trace of the lady was there. He saw the early orange lights slowly appearing from the east, it was already dawn. He thought to go back home to Maria already but the thought of fighting with his wife because he brought nothing bothers his mind. Then he remembers what the lady in his dreams said gives him hope. So he decided to travel to the seventh mountain to find some pomelo in the forest. The lady could have some spare fruit to offer or some preserved one. He thought he could buy at least one for his wife.
Arturo began his journey, he brought with him some ripe bananas and a water-filled in a bamboo trunk for his travel. He could reach the seventh mountain in the afternoon and it was a good time to search the forest in which where the lady was staying, and he could go back home before dawn the next day with the pomelo.
At last, Arturo reaches the seventh mountain without any hassle. He immediately plunges into the forest and in an instant saw a little nipa hut situated in a corner of a garden full of blooming flowers. A young girl attending to the garden saw him coming and immediately walk towards him.
"What are doing in this place young man." The girl asked Arturo.
"I am looking for the lady who is living here and told me that I could find what I am looking for in here in the middle of the forest," Arturo replied.
You're about to enter the middle of the forest, but believe me, you can't find anything good in that place. So you better go home now." Said the girl.
But Arturo insisted to push through and ask the girl which way is shorter to reach the middle of the forest.
"As I've said you can't find what you are looking for in that place. Everything you take from there has something in return." The girl told Arturo.
But Arturo was persistent to get a pomelo for Maria so he ignores the girl's warning and continue walking through the woods in the forest.
*Who is the girl in the nipa hut?
*Would Arturo get a pomelo from the middle of the forest?
Hang in there dearest readers, the next chapter is coming. And before I forget this story was told to us by our father. It was a bedtime story actually, I just wanna share it with you just in case you are a fan of Hanzel and Gretel lol. But anyway, it was not the same story as the two but the theme was the same, a fictional one and about some magic too.
