"Kamusta ka na? Masaya ka ba jan?" "November 1 na nman, happy birthday saiyo."
Do you remember when this date of november came? You just laugh because no one knows that it was your birthday because everybody was just focus on all saints day and all souls day ( undas ). I also don't know before untill when you invited me to try to drink a bottle of gin which you just took from your mothers paninda saying that you want to feel how to become drunk like of those old men when drinking the said liquor. At first I am skeptical to try because I am afraid when someone will see us and they will tell my father which prohibited us to try those vices on our young age. But you tagged me along in your uncles house backyard, and since it was a full moon night the surroundings was clear and every folk was on their busy task inside their homes. To the shady part we settled in under a huge star apple tree, we sat down on a stone cemented pavement near a faucet, you took out the round bottle of gin and a shot glass and bowl of pulutan dish which you cook just for us. I am amazed that you already prepared everything with out me knowing even though we are together the whole day.
You took the gin open easily the cap through biting it ( oh I can't do that ) and poured a little amount in the glass, the smell was so hard, I can't tell if I can drink that but as you raise your glass and said "it's my birthday so let's try something new." And at the same time you gulp the liquor bottoms up.
I asked you what's the taste? You answered me with disgusting faced. "Here, try for yourself."
I hesitantly took the glass and poured a little amount. And before drink it I smelled first that makes me about to throw up but you said. "Hold your breath then drink up fast." And that what I did, I even pinch my nose to not smell the hard alcohol of the gin and drink straight my shot. Uurgh! The bitter taste was stuck on my mouth! You held a piece of star fruit to me and I immediately bite that took away all the bitter taste of the gin in my palate. Tssh! If not only your birthday I would never tried this thingy drinking I said jokingly. But I am happy having this first drinking session of my teenage moment with you behsie, especially that its your birthday.
That night all folk are busy preparing and cooking traditional foods like kakanin for the occasion and no one noticed us doing our little adventure lol. But we did not finished the whole bottle of gin, we maybe just drink 1/3 of it then threw away the left over so that no evidence if ever someone saw us lol. After that, we walked our way to my best friend house and go straight to our prepared sleeping corner to hide our drunken state. As usual before slumber we talked a lot about our embarrassing and funny moment untill our eyes can't help it and doze to dream land.
And since your'e gone I am saddened everytime november first was approaching. It always reminds me of our memories during teenage days. The silliness that we done together, climbing the mountain in between our villages at the wee hour of the night with our friends and just the full moon was the sole witnessed. We got a lot of memories that worth to cherished. You are so especial to me though others may see you just a mere simple girl in the village. You know my secrets that others don't and likewise to me unto you that even your sisters don't.
Halloween would be celebrated by many others but to me I am celebrating a special day. A happy birthday to my best friend in the after life. All I can offer is a heartfelt prayer for the peaceful reposed of her soul and for all my loved one's who passed this life already.
Maybe some are not a believer of the soul of the dead and I respect. We had our own belief and I can't argue with that. Just hope that you will respect mine too.

Ganun po talaga no kapag ung birthday natapat ng holiday occassion, natatabunan lagi ung celebration. November is heartbreaking month for me too. My Mom died the same day of her birthday, so yearly we remember that day as her birthday in heaven. Your bestfriend will be grateful knowing that you always remember her birthday. ❤
