Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg is one of the people in the history of the world who ‘saw-saw-won’. At just 18 years old, the gentleman made a full-length movie with a budget of 500. That was the beginning of his more than four-decade filmmaking career, and the films he was involved in at the time included blockbuster hits such as Jurassic Park, Lincoln, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, which grossed over 6.50 billion. !
We all know that Spielberg's first world-shaking film was called Jaws, but the funny thing is that he himself described the experience of this movie as "the worst experience of my life"! Literally 26-year-old Spielberg had a nightmare shooting this movie. The problem started with the main character, a 25-foot mechanical shark named "Bruce". The performance of the lady was chaotic, 55 days of shooting ended in 159 days and the budget of 4.50 million stood at 10 million!
Naturally the production team, the studio are all unhappy. Spielberg is almost crazy, how to finish shooting. Forced to improvise. He focused more on surface-above water shots than underwater shots. And the funny thing is, all these Surface-Above water shots combine with the Four-Not Hunting Melody to create a suspense movie that ranks among the best hits of all time after its release. That being said, ‘not seeing sharks’ was scarier than seeing sharks in a movie!
The movie Super-Duper hit, Million Dollar Income, was hidden behind all this, more than 100 days of shooting than the schedule, two and a half times the budget. As a result, Spielberg learned nothing and moved on to the next project.
Let me tell you something about this place. I think most talented people make this mistake. There is talent, a little messy, first people get caught, success is caught, and that's where the bigger problems start. The taste of success is added to the previous problems. It is difficult to handle if you are not careful.
I can give many such examples in the vicinity.
Surprisingly, the next movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which was a box office hit with the same problem of budget and schedule, later described the experience of making this movie as "twice as bad and twice as expensive"!
However, the success of two movies in a row introduced everyone to a successful movie maker and made Spielberg reckless. He started his third project, 1941 which was a satire on World War II where Americans were ridiculed for fear of the Japanese after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Naturally, the Americans did not take the movie well, and from the very beginning of making the Spielberg movie, they were plagued with various problems and realized how much rice.
To break the previous stigma, Spielberg announced before the start of the movie that he would not spend a penny on 12 million, which turned out to be one of the best jokes in the history of the film when the movie budget went up to. 31.5 million! You will be more surprised to know that this was the smallest problem surrounding the movie. The script was bad, the direction was random. Add to that the ego with the lead character, the genius of the whimsical, the whimsical behavior of a messy director, wrapped in the ego of easy success.
The result is a fall from heaven. Spielberg was another name for the hit movie, almost never seen in America. Even then 1941 made some profit because people on the other side of the world liked humor about Americans. Spielberg was so embarrassed by the movie that he was not in the country at the time of its release!
Since the real twist of the whole story. Spielberg wonders why Spielberg's answer can be found in what he did next. Everyone makes mistakes, but how many learn from mistakes? Spielberg knew there was no problem with his talent, the problem was discipline. He knows how to make a good movie but does not know how to make a movie on a budget.
What Spielberg did after that is completely rare in the context of our society. He took refuge in a guru named George Lucas. This gentleman is also another legend, an old friend of Spielberg, a contemporary filmmaker but most importantly Lucas is famous for his budget and schedule. Explaining the contrast between the two's film-making styles, it is said that Lucas had a heart attack once he saw Spielberg's set.
However, to everyone's surprise, Spielberg was hired as Lucas' assistant, and the two began building Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. How effective it was for Spielberg when the most successful movie of 1971 was made in just 63 days when the schedule was 65 days!
The movie was over, the business was successful, but Spielberg's goal was not. He had found a way to overcome the weakness that was important for Spielberg as well as the whole world. George Lucas deserves thanks here too. If someone considers us a guru, we get him. I went crazy to build my own way on the broken ground. Lucas, however, did not, he helped Spielberg to overcome his weaknesses hand-in-hand, did not try to change his strengths.
