Day 9: Celebrating Christmas in The Dark

Saturday

No matter what the situation is, the Christmas spirit will always be in our hearts.

We always find ways to celebrate Christmas 🎄

The best thing about being a Filipino (Bisaya) is that we always have this smile on our faces that never fades, no matter what the situation is. Whether we get hit by a typhoon or any calamity, we may cry for a second, but later on, we must move on and smile because it has already happened and we must face the new day ahead.

Just like us, there's no such thing as "boring" when it comes to our family, especially my cousins. If you've read my other articles about my cousins, then you know how much fun it is to be with them. We do fun and stupid things just to keep us entertained and happy.

We may celebrate Christmas in the dark with candlelight on, without electricity, but our Christmas is never boring at all. We still get to be able to do a lot of Christmas activities and fun games even though there's no network coverage and electricity. It feels like we're back to the good old days. Simple but full of fun, celebrate it with the whole family.

December 24, 2021

In the morning, we had already prepared the food. Actually, we didn't prepare that many foods; just chicken and spaghetti, and the rest is just that we bought them. We wanted to make dessert, especially mango float and fruit salad, but we couldn't because the refrigerator was not on because there was no electricity, and it doesn't taste good if it's not cold, or at least frozen a little. I mean, imagine eating an unfrozen mango float, lol.

At 4 in the afternoon, we already ate the food that we had cooked. We don't have a choice but to eat them because if we wait until midnight, they might get spoiled, and also, it will be dark and we're only using candle lights and cellphone flashlights.

Then at 7pm, we didn't get to attend the mass because of the rain. It rained heavily, along with thunder and lightning. We got a little worried at that time because they said that there would be another strong storm coming, and it sucks because it was Christmas Eve and there would be a storm coming. But thank goodness the rain didn't last long and it stopped.

We, my cousins, did a pizza party. All of us chipped in to buy a pizza. Our Bantayan Island trip got canceled because of the situation that we're in right now. We were planning to have a Christmas party, but that got canceled too because there's no electricity or water. We always had our Christmas party at night. So we decided to just cancel everything because there are still lots of things we need to prioritize and also, there are still a lot of next opportunities to make it happen. If typhoon Odette hadn't struck, we might be packing right now on the way to Bantayan.

At 8 pm, my sister and my cousin arrived. They were the ones who bought the pizza. They bought, of course, their favorite drinks. A night with all of my cousins wouldn't be complete without a drink.

This is how we celebrate Christmas. A total blackout, with only a little light from each of our phones' flashlights. But my cousin has his solar lights and it helps make the room look more visible.

Just a simple Christmas celebration with my cousins. My cousin played the guitar and we jam into different songs and it was a total fun!

December 25,

We played BINGO!

My cousin bought a Bingo game cards, we played 2 pesos per card. It's a just for fun and there are no other people around, it's just us. This was supposed to be played by us, young ones, cousins, but all of a sudden my mom, our uncles and even our grandma joined in! Haha.

Look at the lights that we used lol, each of us has our own flashlights just to see the cards properly. We made DIY lights with the used of oil and salt. That's the light that we put in the middle.

Just need to refill the oil when its already drained. It's a great one and way cheaper than buying candles that are overpriced. Teehee.

Even without water and electricity, we can still be happy.

Christmas is never boring when it comes to us. ❣️

Jini's Note:

I hope you guys understand my situation if I couldn't visit you and read some of your articles, our phones battery is very limited because we don't have electricity until now. We need to pay 30Pesos for them to allow us to charge our phone. In our place, there are only few who has generators so we really need to use our phones battery wisely.

Thank you for stopping by and reading this article of mine. You can always hit the Like and Subscribe buttons if you want to.

There's something about Bisaya that is very likable. You guys know how to rise up to situations. Salute to everyone who have been affected by the typhoon but still chose to be happy despite of the challenges. ❤️🎄

This is so true mare, iyak lang ng kaunti tas happy na ulit. We don't have any other choice but to keep moving forward, imbis na umiyak, kanya kanyang pukpok nalang ng bubong para maitayo na ulit yung bahay haha

It is necessary to participate in the sacraments, in Holy Communion. This is what really gives meaning to your life on the way to Christ. Everything else - the gingerbread houses, the Magi, the shepherds and shepherdesses, the feast and presents - is a very important part of our Christmas tradition, but it all loses all meaning if Christ is not in the heart. Of all the articles I've read, your version, which came out by chance, is more in keeping with the holiday. Yes, on this day it is even supposed that some candles burn.

Every Christmas, we always attend mass, but sadly this Christmas we weren't able to attend because of the heavy rain and lightning. We were forced to stay in the house.

The spirit of Christmas still intact despite of the situation you've facing right now, I'm glad that people there celebrate Xmas and I'm glad that there's still happiness in people's faces despite of tragedy. I am hoping that the electricity will come back before New years eve so that all of you in visayas can celebrate and enjoy the day.

Happy holidays mareng! GOD BLESS you and your Family always. 😄
