Nowadays, technology brought so much comfort and reliance to people around the world. Modern technology has created multifunctional things such as smartphones and computers, which are increasingly advanced and made our life easier and faster, better and comfortable, and more enjoyable.

Along with the invention of smartphones is the creation of various applications that helps people to shorten the time to perform an action or work and delighting them with a seamless experience. It caters people with personalized content and offers communication in the language they speak and understand. Mobile applications also increase productivity and give people new learning techniques. These applications are helpful in business and education.

Many of these applications are educational that helps students and even non-students to make their work easier and faster. Some applications will correct your grammar mistakes and will improve your writing techniques. Some will help you solve complex math problems very easily and answers various questions about science and other subjects.

However, just like with other things in this world, there are also disadvantages to using mobile applications. Because of the comfort, convenience, and effectivity it gives in performing and completing a certain work, it makes people reliant on it, abandoning the real process of education and embracing the digital life.

Take grammar checker apps as an example. Grammar checker apps proofread your content to make sure that is perfect, precise, and free of grammar mistakes. It is designed to enhance the user's proficiency in the English language by revealing their errors and mistakes. However, it is not the case for all users.

  • Grammar checker apps correct your grammar and spelling mistakes, however, it does not teach the real concepts of grammar and spelling and the basics of the English language itself. Once the users rely too much on the application, it will only make them difficult in correcting their works by themselves and such apps will only deteriorate their knowledge of English.

  • The grammar checker will only make users lazy. Due to over-reliance on the app, the users give less effort into doing the work by themselves. Because of the app, they do not care about the typos, punctuations, and sentence constructions. The only thing in their mind is, the grammar checker will later proofread and correct their mistakes.

This kind of automated application may help users to correct their mistakes and to complete the work easier and faster, however, users should understand that the grammar checker has flaws as well. The laws are quite complex and the software rules are limited which sometimes gives incorrect results. The software won't be able to detect mistakes in complex sentences because it can incorporate itself with other tools and does not rely on an exact word processor to execute its operation.

Another example is built-in calculators on our phone and computers and those math solving applications that aid in solving complex math problems like PhotoMath.

  • PhotoMath app solves complex math problem in seconds even showing the steps of solving equations and complex math problems. Many educational institutions are already using this app even teachers as well as students.

  • Some students rely on this app in solving their math homework, however, phones are not allowed during tests or any sort of assessments.

  • So if a student will only rely on it without understanding and applying the knowledge learned from it, therefore, there is a tendency that he/she will fail the math test.

I remember my math teacher told us when I was in secondary, he says that in math, there are different ways to solve the problem, it is just a matter of getting the correct answer.

Although the educational industries understood the potential of educational apps, and many institutions and teachers have integrated their platforms with educational apps, we should understand that an application is effective when the students get to learn things through it, the same goes for other users.

"DO NOT JUST RELY ON EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS, BUT APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE LEARNED THROUGH IT"

We cannot deny the fact that many applications are useful and effective and people love to use those apps. But, we should always apply the acquired knowledge from educational applications to our daily works to avoid over-reliance and we should be aware of the disadvantages that might occur in adopting educational apps.

For example in grammar checker:

  • The app will proofread your content and will give you the list of errors with the corresponding corrections and suggestions.

  • Some users will just gonna click on the suggestions without understanding it which makes the app useless.

How will you learn from it if you will not understand what you are writing or what the app is teaching you?

But as I have mentioned above, this app has flaws too and so we shouldn't rely on it.

Learning through apps is a strength but at the same time, it can be complicated.

And an application is not meant to replace the regular educational teachings and over-reliance on educational technology has negative impacts on users and educational teaching process. We do not take real education at face value anymore. We are walking away from making our own decisions and judgments by using our thoughts and understanding. If we rely too much on technology, it will make us less human and will only distort our reality and deteriorate our knowledge.

There's nothing wrong to take advantage of technology and mobile applications for as long as we develop skills through it and thereafter acquire knowledge

Still definitely not a fan of apps since everything i know was pounded into my head by the highschool i was in. They were very strict with everything there so I'm never one for correctional apps

You're a smart girl . you don't need an app 😁😁 Although its an aid for many students, learning at school is still better than using apps.

It is and those apps kill the creativity sometimes like how in stories there can be a few grammatical errors in dialogues because it's a dialogue after all, grammar doesn't apply to supposedly spoken words

Mobile apps are very convenient but you are right, we might think developers were smart enough to create such useful apps, still they have flaws and we can still experience few errors from it. So, we still need to review our works. Write and proofread to avoid errors also with the help of these applications.

Developers are just human, and humans aren't perfect, so everything in this world is not perfect... Yes we should always check our work even if we use the help of applications to make sure that it is correct

You just gave one example but of you think about it, there's actually a lot of other educational applications out there that will make our lives easier. It's not actually wrong to use those applications as long as you only use it as an aid for your studies and help you improve. But people nowadays, most specially the students, becomes too dependent on those applications and as a result, they don't learn holistically. Sad to say, it even encourage them to become lazy learners.

That exactly my point, instead of thinking about the problem and the solution, students rely on applications which deteriorates their knowledge more.

Just read this and deeply agree, I have always found people who used autocorrect, face tune, photo enhancing, spreaded raw informations without thinking about them was harming no one but themselves. But we can also blame society nowadays which want us to be perfect in every aspect. People are made in to compete between each other and it is heavy load for their mentality, so they realy on this ,, inventions,, I personally, love the mistakes in people.... Amazingly written articleπŸ’ͺ🏼

Thank you for reading it. I wonder why doesn't want to comment here, maybe because they're doing it πŸ˜… am using Grammarly since the other day and that's what I have noticed... I may don't have perfect English skills here I don't actually care for as long as its understandable..well its not my native language anyway... What matters is, I don't rely too much on it. I want to learn in my own way..

As far as people are getting educated by these grammar apps it is good, but when they fully rely on it like you warned them in article their mind and knowledge starts to grow lean, but for their bad. I find your english pretty good, and saying that according to your comments. Do you use correction in those?

Since another day, I checked my finished article on Grammarly site and found some mistakes. But then I always checked the suggestions and follow it.at the same double-check if the suggestion is correct, apps arent perfect... It's still better to learn things by yourself not relying on apps.

I was actually influenced by some here bout that Grammarly πŸ˜… and was curious as well bout writing and check how many errors do I have.. Lol.
