Anaphylactic shock - severe allergic reaction affecting the whole body, potentially fatal.
Triggers: nuts, shellfish, eggs, wasp and bee stings, latex, certain medications.
A casualty in anaphylactic shock needs ewmergency treatment with an injection of adrenaline.
Symptoms: red itchy rash, watery eyes, swelling of hands, feet or face, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarhoea, difficulty brathing, pale or flushed skin, swelling of the tongue or throat, confusion, agitation, signs of shock.
Treatment: Call 2222 in hospital or 999 outside hospital (in UK). Tell operator that you supect anaphylactic shock. Check if they have an epipen and use it. Best to sit up in a position relieving any breathing difficulty, if pale or weak pulse, lie down. Monitor pulse, temperature, blood pressure and breathing. Repeated doses of adrenaline can be given every 5 minutes using an epipen is the symptoms return or there is no improvement.
