Doctor Who - Worlds apart (or what happen when BBC channel discover the NFT market) As i was wandering in wonder on the internet, i found this website - https://doctorwho-worldsapart.com. I think this can be huge for NFT in general, as BBC is the owner of the Doctor Who franchise, a popular kiddies and adults science fiction TV show started all the way back in the 1963. We are talking of the adventures of an extraterrestrial Time Lord called ''The Doctor'', of human appearance, exploring the Universe in a time travelling space-ship called TARDIS ("Time and Relative Dimension in Space"). This TV show is now part of the British popular culture and often the children can tell you the name of all the 13 Doctors playing the part until now.  Let's see the video and enjoy the virtual trip into the what to be a interesting game (as there are many people here in Britain collecting Doctor Who memorabilia and they are banking on this for the game to be a success). You got 8 character cards:  Creatures - similar with the monsters from Splinterlands, and Companions - more dangerous than Creatures.  Upgrades - giving extra-boosts for Creatures and Companions. Then we have Moments and Flashes - cards used on your turn or your opponent turn - think of them as some kind of Mass Spells.  Objects and Phenomenons - cards used to give some boost/curse to one or more cards, but they do not attack or defend. And the last one - Planets - they completely change the background giving big advantages to their native population.  Now take a look at the card, seems complicated, right? Or maybe not (if you played the old card game Doctor Who).  I think the important bits are Attack and Health, and the additional abilities. Arton is similar with Mana, and is used as the cost for the card to be played on the table. And the table, the table is quite nice. You have night and day, to start with, and different planets to visit around.  But i must to admit that the graphics are excellent and the Doctor Who universe has enough history and characters to sustain the game. Now comes the funny part. The aim of the game is to destroy the opponent TARDIS shield (the spaceship called TARDIS acts like a summoner in the game). But they say a game can last 10-30 minutes. Are you being serious, half an hour to play the game? Also, they are saying that you may need at least 40 different cards to create a decent deck. The game is happening in 3 timelines past (the used cards) present (your board at the actual moment) and the future (the cards left in your deck). You may see how some cards affect the past or the future. The cards used in battle gain experience, and advance from level 1 to level 15 getting a different frame (bronze, silver, gold, diamond). There are also Alien Frames, Bronze Dalek, Cyber-Warrior, Silurian, Weeping Angel, Ice Warrior, White-Point Star and TARDIS, with a limited supply, probably costing a lot of money once resold on the secondary market. Each card also has a statistics section, showing you how the card was used in your games).  The Alpha launch is in the second semester of 2021, with the public Beta launch at the end of the year. If you are a serious player, or investor, you can buy a Founders Token, costing 250$ at the moment, a special ERC-721 Ethereum NFT giving you exclusive perks as you can see bellow: They have already made a Library, where you can learn more about the cards and their role. I bought 10 packs to check my lack of luck, and i must admit, out of 50 cards, i got 2 Legendary cards, 10 Epic, 15 Rare and the rest of them Common. I have even got a Doctor - The second one. My only issue is with the NFT being on the Ethereum blockchain, making the secondary markets useless, with the current fees. Share your battle - Weekly Challenge! MITICA HEADHUNTER This week is a nice challenge, and it happen that i got finally what is needed for the week. I have also managed few nice wins using a special team arrangement. Check my video: https://youtu.be/j2UB4jVWPrs The rules of the battle were Equalizer and 27 mana. I use my faithful Mylor Crowning as summoner for his thorns, as i expect at least one or two melee in the battle. I dream of upgrading this summoner at level 2, so i benefit better from the cards. And high life is bad, as i do not have many cards to do enough damage. I used the chicken first and the Failed summoner as insurance for Magic damage return and low mana cards. Then i put the Nectar Queen as a real tank, followed by Mitica and Goblin Thief foe a nice mixed damage, with the Ooze on the last position to protect from sneak ability. As you can see, everything worked out great, and it was almost an effortless win. This one is a good card, but costs too much in my opinion, so it is not viable in low mana battle despite the high damage. Can be useful for ranged back damage in high mana battles and when you have earthquake terrain. Hope you enjoyed the battle. In other order of ideas, i reached $27 in card evaluation. And i need 8330 Power to reach Silver. But this week i was lucky in the chest lottery, as i got paid for daily quests like this: 1 x Robo Dragon Knight - Legendary 1 x Baby Unicorn - New card 1 x Gelatinous Cube - Upgrade needed 1 x Undead Rex - Upgrade needed 15 DEC and 1 Alchemy potion. Usually i get only potions so this is a huge improvement in daily drops. G. (The eternal beginner)

Side hustle 001 - Mining Helium (HNT) with Helium Hotspot and how to set it up  On the First of January i received this pack. What is this? You may ask. Is a completely free Helium Hotspot (free cost and free shipping, at first i was thinking that something is not right, but after i did a bit of research, looked like a legit business, and the CEO of Emrit is in fact quite a brilliant guy with few projects of his own in the crypto-market) and i will use it to mine Helium token (HNT). Getting one of it is quite easy, even if it is a process of selection, as they are in the incipient stage, the probability to qualify for a Hotspot is quite high. You just need to go the their website - Emrit.io - and ask for one, after you complete all the data requested. As this is meant to be a global internet network, so i presume they check if there is any coverage in your area.  https://emrit.io/?referral=Heruvim78 So, back to our business. The pack was received and the device was inside, heavily protected. I let it rest for one day, presuming that it came from a cold environment, and after one day i assemble it.  As you can see here, i choose to use a internet cable (but you can use the WIFI also if you want) and there is also an antenna and the power cable. Once you do this you can see different lights on the device. First it is red, but as you continue to set it up, will become blue and then green.  On this side you have the network search button, the little black one, and you need to press that when you search for the internet network, after you download the phone app needed to set the device (it is called Helium Hotspot and it is available both on Android and Iphone). In the end, when everything is done, the light will be green, and you are mining the Helium now.  In order to set up the Hotspot, you need to download the phone app and to follow the next steps. Normally, you start with ''Add a new Hotspot''. Then they will ask you what you want to add to the network. You got two possibilities here. First is the free Helium Hotspot, from Emrit.io, paying you between $20-50 per month, according to Reddit users. The second one, RAK hotspot miner, is used to provide more coverage mainly, and to mine Helium secondarily, and you need to pay $249 to pre-order it. It is meant to be used by companies providing services on the Helium network, but any individual can buy it also when will be available. In our case i selected the Helium Hotspot. https://emrit.io/?referral=Heruvim78 Then you go to the diagnostics, and check the Next button.  Then you need to use the power cable, and be sure that your device is ON. I must say that the app is easy to use, not over complicated, and if you follow the instructions, you will have your Hotspot set up in no time.  Next on the list, you need to power up and pair the device with the phone app, using the lateral button showed by me up in the picture of the device (Remember, the little black one!). Once you did that a blue light is activated. Once the blue light is on, you press next on the phone app, and a scan starts. Once the device is founded, all you have to do is to set the internet up, by cable or using WIFI, and the setup is done. A green light must to be shown, if mining is active. You can just close the app now, and enjoy the mining.  What i can say, the device is small enough and quite rudimentary, but it is doing the job. It is not taking a lot of bandwidth, as i did my checks, and their website said that the Hotspot use as much energy as a 5W light bulb. You may need to wait few hours until the device is deemed online on their website, and right now i am mining. I have already 25.03 Helium to be paid (which is around $33).  In terms of numbers, They paid 236k Helium until now for providing coverage, and they have Emrit Hotspots in 13 countries already.  Total value earned by our hosts for providing network coverage. There are more than 12.000 Gateways working at the moment, and the value of Helium toke right now is: You are earning 20% of the total Helium mined, if you use their devices. This is paid in the Helium wallet from the phone app you just downloaded on the 10th of each month, after first full month of mining passed. So, 10th of February will be my first payment, if i am right. After that i will try to see if i can sell it on Binance or keep it, i did not decided yet.  There it is. If you qualify for this and your country is covered, try it, i estimate $2-300 of really passive income, as you literally do not need to do anything once you set it up. Latest news in Crypto-world Ho!Ho!Ho! I hope all of you had a Merry Christmas, better than your expectations. Crypto is indeed magical these days, let's see what happened lately: On Crypto.com we have another Supercharger event for January, where you can stake CRO tokens and mine Ziliqa with an APY of 10%. Some good news, the attacker behind Cover Protocol returned all the stolen funds, valued at 4350 ETH, after he used a completely new method to exploit the smart contract and minted 40 quintillion COVER tokens. Huh, how many zeros has a quintillion? Billion, trillion, quadrillion, quintillion. Huh! 30 zeros. One thousand million of billions. Massive! Binance will launch European Style options contract (in translation simple options contracts where the traders set their own rules for the contract), mostly to tempt the institutional investors. BNB, DOT and ADA are all the way up, with 29%, 27% and 10%. Bitcoin is $26726 right now, and ETH is $726. The altcoin wave is coming. Brace yourselves! And one of the less known coins, named REEF FINANCE, made me look twice at it. I believe we got a winner there. There is potential for at least 10x, if not even 50x if i am a bit optimistic. I am looking forward to 2021 and i cannot wait for the end of the year, to do the match and see how much my portfolio grew from March when i started to be serious about crypto until now. My early retirement plan is looking good right now. Death Elemental Weekly Battle Challenge - Splinterlands Death Elemental Weekly Battle Challenge - Splinterlands is going on this week (as you can see in here: https://hive.blog/splinterlands/@splinterlands/share-your-battle-weekly-challenge-death-elemental ). I must to admit i do not use this card very often, and as you can see in the video, i got beaten badly by Pyre. Fire splinter got the advantage, and my magic sniper got sniped in one shot. I tried to resist, even amaged to get two of his cards out, but i could not win. Cryptocurrency news on Christmas' Eve Bitwise Crypto Fund just liquidated their XRP position right after SEC sued Ripple.  We are talking about 3.8% of the fund, holding XRP token, just because they are deemed to be securities. This will imply extra measures to be taken and extra KYC, and they are not willing to do that yet.  Grayscale bought another $3.4 billion in crypto, reaching a total of $16.4 billion right now, with mainly bitcoin and ethereum, with some litecoin, bitcoin cash and  and ethereum classic added to the mix.  With the latest data breaches and leaks (Ledger, i am looking at you), there are now self generated emails threatening people even with kidnapping and murder, asking for the private keys. Remember, not your keys, not your crypto, the moment you give them away you can say goodbye to your crypto.  Over 2 million ETH are locked in the ETH2.0 staking contract, and that is 1.2 billion dollars in Ethereum. As you may know, ETH2.0 launched earlier this month, although it's just the first step in a multi-year process. There is still a lot to improve until the network will move completely on proof of stake.  Binance launched 3 more Chiliz tokens yesterday, one being e-sport Dota team OG, the other two football clubs Atletico Madrid and AS Roma. Previously we had PSG and Juventus launched first round. They increased quite nicely and showed potential. But before this, in August, Barcelona FC tokens sold in less than two hours.  An the joke of the day ''A US Treasury working group proposed that stablecoin issuers should be able to comply with sanctions obligations and enable one-to-one redemptions. The report suggests that stablecoins could pose a threat to "international monetary stability" by reducing confidence in domestic fiat currencies.'' Sounds like US government is trying to do anything they can to stop American citizens to have access to cryptocurrencies. The risk to lose your mind - some important notes about Alzheimer **Did you know** that Alzheimer's disease is in fact not one but a group of three diseases. Type one (inflammation type) is characterized by loss of ability to store new information, but the long term memory and the ability to speak, calculate, spell and write is retained. Type 2 is characterized by loss of trophic support, and by loss of ability to store new information, but the long term memory and the ability to speak, calculate, spell and write is retained. Inflammatory markers are not high in  this case, they can even be lower than normal. You can have both type 1 and type 2 in the same time later in life. This may run in the family. Type 3 is toxic (vile) and appears usually in people carrying the common ApoE3 allele rather than ApoE4. Does not run in the family. Usually strikes at age 40-50, following grat stress, with cognitive difficulties involving numbers , speech and organizing skills. Short term, long term and procedural memory (how to do simple or complex things) is affected. Exposure to toxic compounds (heavy metals, mycotoxins from mold) seems to be also one of the factors increasing the risk.  Type 1 starts at age 40-50 if you have one copy of ApoE4 allele, or at age 50-60 if you have two copies of ApoE4. No copies of ApoE4 - starts around 60-70. Type 2 initiates a decade later than type one, given the same variation of ApoE4.  (**Extra information** here - Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a protein involved in the metabolism of fats in the body. It is implicated in Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular disease. ApoE3 is considered the "neutral" APOE genotype. ApoE4 has been implicated in atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, impaired cognitive function,reduced hippocampal volume, HIV, faster disease progression in multiple sclerosis, unfavorable outcome after traumatic brain injury, ischemic cerebrovascular disease, sleep apnea, accelerated telomere shortening and reduced neurite outgrowth.A notable advantage of the E4 allele (relative to E2 and E3) is a positive association with higher levels of vitamin D, which may help explain its prevalence despite its seeming complicity in various diseases or disorders. APOE transports lipids, fat-soluble vitamins, and cholesterol into the lymph system and then into the blood. It is synthesized principally in the liver, but has also been found in other tissues such as the brain, kidneys, and spleen. In the nervous system, non-neuronal cell types, most notably astroglia and microglia, are the primary producers of APOE, while neurons preferentially express the receptors for APOE. There are seven currently identified mammalian receptors for APOE which belong to the evolutionarily conserved LDLR family. Hence the relation with the amyloid-beta plaque issue in Alzheimer's disease).  I will probably explore this aspect a bit more in future posts.

Another week in Crypto-verse (14-20.12.2020) The Nexus Mutual CEO, Hugh Karp offered a 300k dollars rewards to anyone solving the hack. The hacker asked for 4500 ETH instead (2.8 million dollars). What will happen next? Is this a negotiation? CME Group announced that they will offer ETH Futures in February 2021. They do have a big slice of the BTC Futures market, being one of the first three largest players in the space.  The US exchange Kraken announced that they will integrate the Lightning Network as a second layer Bitcoin scalability solution, for fastear, easier and more reliable payments on the Bitcoin blockchain. They are dealing with the network congestion and high transaction costs much better than others (Coinbase website got stuck again during the recent 23k mark rise of BTC, and the transactions stopped, but this is not longer surprising for anyone, as they do this every time this happen, so the moral is, you want faster transactions, do not use Coinbase. Even its CEO, Brian Armstrong, admitted this with a blog post, quote ''Although we may occasionally fall short, we will always do our best to address our shortcomings.'').  Actually, as we talk about BTC rise, it was up as much as $23700, before falling back slightly, but recovered already. Fun fact, if you had mined a block of BTC before 2012 - 50 BTC - you are a millionaire right now. Even on Twitter, more than 92k tweets about Bitcoin were posted, this is a highest level since January 2018.  Paxos, the company providing brokerage service for Paypal, Credit Suisse and Revolut, raised 142 million dollars in a Series C funding round, planning to double the size of their staff numbers.  Now, talking about Coinbase, they announced they are prepared to be publicly listed. It is not sure if this will be done via IPO or direct listing. They are being reviewed by SEC as we speak, as according to Messari they are worth more than 27 billion dollars.  Compound Labs released a white paper, showing that they are working on Compound Chain, a blockchain planning to overcome high gas costs, serve other chains than Ethereum and mitigate risks.  The Salvation Army charity partnered with Engiven - a cryptocurrency giving platform, in order to let their donors to donate Bitcoin or Ethereum, as they need much more funds since the pandemic started.  You may have heard about the most expensive pizza in the world, the one bought with a lot of Bitcoin, but you did not heard yet of Martti Malmi, a nice man from Finland, who mined 55000 BTC and sold them in 2012. Bought a nice apartment in Helsinki with the money received from the sale, and does not matter that this is worth 1.25 billion dollars now, right? PVMihalache, you see, others really have reasons to complain about selling Bitcoin early, that is not 500 USD, right? Most of the contracts offered today are slightly over or under the money paid for mining, and they can be for life (meaning they run as long as the company is getting some profit) or for 1-2 years. You can find online calculators to check their return on investment. But there are always alternatives, and you can make your own mining farm if you have a room available, and some solar panels or a eolian windmill to get free electricity, just to give an example.   3. Just another day in Crypto-verse It is official, Bitcoin just went through the 20k mark, all the way to $20.700. This happened exactly 3 years after the all time high from 2017, and now people are wondering if there is more to come? Or as Ryan Selkis put it ''it's a bad day to be a Bitcoin bear''. In 2017, the altcoins surge followed shortly after. Will this happen again? XRP and LTC outperformed BTC actually, and British investment firm Ruffer decided tyo buy $744 million BTC , moving away from gold. What is not surprising? Coinbase experiencing connectivity problems when all this happened. Yes, they did it again, really! MassMutual life insurance giant got also 100 million dollars in BTC, adding a 5 million dollars equity in NYDYG (If you lived under a rock, like me, then you need to know that NYDIG is a leading financial services firm dedicated to Bitcoin). Singapore-based bank DBS officially launched their own cryptoexchange, and this will be operational next week, trading SGD, USD, HKD and JPY as fiat, and BTC, ETH,BCH and XRP as crypto. You heard of Lil'Yachty, the rapped who just sold 25.000 of his own social tokens to his fans, with 15$ each, netting a nice $375.000. He promised ''experiential access that no one else can get''. Good to be one of his fans, i believe. BNC research pointed out some of the biggest risks for the DEFI market. Aurus (epic fantasy)   I was in center of London, where i could see a jewelry shop. I entered inside, because i found that my necklace has beed broken one week ago. in the shop it was an old man, and he looked somehow familiar to me. I asked him if he can repair my necklace. He just smiled.    -'Thoughts are free and are subject to no rule. On them rests the freedom of man, and they tower above the light of nature.' But what i think is not your problem here. It's what i can do. And yes, i can repair your jewel. Wait five minutes.    I sit down and i looked around. Nice paintings on the wall, all with alchemic theme. It was like i just blinked and the jeweler was back.    - Fifteen pounds, he told me. I paid and i left the shop. But the really strange thing was few days later, when i finished my book about Ho'oponopono and i took another. 'Secrets of the nature' by Paracelsus. And from the first page the familiar face of the jeweler smiled back to me.    A brand new day begin for me. And i am happy. Because i know that the philosophical stone, the one who give us immortality, is real. Investments in blockchain games - DCity - Simcity game with 280%+ROI for Hive token In one of my journeys, wandering in the darkest corners of the internet, i found this fun game, and after enjoying it for a week of two, i realized that there is even a way to make decent profit out of it. And, boy, there are so many ways to make a profit out of this intriguing game (Dcity).   https://www.publish0x.com/DCity.io Seems complicated, but it is not really. Anyway, in order to play the game, you need to use HIVE token, and one of his advantages is that anyone, with no matter what amount of money, can make it profitable. Even a small city can bring huge returns, safely, especially if you are lucky.  I will try to show you few of the ways in which you can benefit out of DCity.  1. Hive token mining and HODL. In at least three ways, first one, for the best 400 cities, as you can see in here, are paid 1% of the total rewards (today the reward pool was $23275) and it is not that hard to reach top 400 as the game is still at the beginning. This reward is paid daily in Hive tokens.  Second way to be rewarded in Hive is to keep the SIM tokens paid daily by the game in your account, according to your average last 30 days SIM token holdings. This is the Holding income.  And the third way is, once you set up your city, to exchange all your received SIM in HIVE, and get your investment back. Of course, the game is incentivizing you to keep them on the platform, for more rewards, but do not be greedy, as you need to pay yourself also. I recommend at least one week per month to get all the rewards and exchanged in HIVE, and send them to your exchange where you can sell them.   2. ENTRY token farming and further use of it for selected Splinterlands tournaments. You can use the Stadium building card and the Gamer and Pro Gamer citizen cards to receive entry. There is also a way to receive Gamer cards, and despite the 2% chance, the only time i did an event, i received an AZMARE DICE card pack (you can use that in Splinterlands game to receive NFT cards or you can sell it). The 500 DEC tokens needed for this event are the tokens you receive from victories in Splinterlands. There are also other events using different coins with different bonuses.  3. BEER token farming and its dual use. The BEER token can be used to start the BEERFEST event, where you will receive Workers and Hard Workers citizen cards, but can be also sold for Hive on HiveEngine. The NFT citizen cards can be also sold on the market for extra profit.  In order to receive BEER tokens, you need to buy Brewery cards, but you can also use the Fully Automated Brewery technology card to double your BEER production.  At the moment i use all my Breweries to mine BEER for events. but then the token is also valued at $0.045 today, and can be sold monthly 4. WEED token farming to create events or just to sell it on exchange. The event is the following: The artist NFT card can be used to farm backgrounds NFT due to their Creativity skill, or can be sold for extra profit. And the NFT cards used for mining this token are: 5. NFT farming using a 25% research bonus city. This is not very expensive, and can be quite lucrative if you are lucky enough to mine some rare cards, but any card you mine is valuable and can be sold. There are four basic attributes and 2 additional attributes, but for this city we will focus on Education.  Population: The number of people that live in your city Income: How much SIM you’re earning each day Popularity: Gives % bonus to Population. Math: (Popularity^0.7)*100 Workers: To receive income from buildings, you need to have enough people (Population) to work there Additional attributes: Education: the base for discovering technologies; 40 education = 1% chance to discover technology daily, with a max cap at 25% Creativity: the base for finding a background; 80 creativity = 1% chance to find a background with a max cap at 25% This is what you want, to reach the maximum cap of 25%. There are 3 NFT cards providing Education, which can be used for NFT mining.  Whatever cards you are mining, you sell for profit. So, in order to reach a 25% you buy any of these 3 cards is cheaper (Price divided by Education provided and whichever is cheaper you buy it). You also need to have workers, so you check you population and buy Luxury homes, Basic Homes and/or Parks (using the same price average Price divided by population provided). But i tend to be biased towards Luxury Home, as they provide some nice daily income, and again, you can sell the daily SIM paid by it for Hive.  **Now the complicated stuff (read it carefully when needed).**  In order to access the game you need a bit of technical expertise. First, you need a Hive account. The easiest and fastest way to make a wallet is Hiveonboard. Once you have the Hive wallet, you will need Hive Keychain extension for Brave or Chrome. Once you log in with your private posting key on Keychain, you are done. Just write Dcity.io in your browser and you are in the game. The dream of Paisie Anno domini 1696. My name is Paisie the valachian, i am living in Athos and i write this to remember, because strange and unknown are the ways of our God. Everything started with a dream, but was so real, like another life. In this dream i am living in somebody's body, a body so weak and  a will weaker than that. In this future world people live without fear, without shame. They don't care about the one who is in need and they did not help each other. They just work, collecting curious things even if they not need them. They do not love, they have relationships. They almost forget what a great creature the human is. The measure of the all things. They have greater and greater knowledge about the universe and the world in which they live, but they forget about their heart. About their soul. Greedy, selfish, full of their importance, they live and die without doing anything important. What a life! Yes, they know a lot, but not about the most important things. I almost cried thinking at their existence. May the holy Archangels be with them!   May 2020. I wake up and i remember vaguely what a strange dream i had. I was a monk living somewhere in Greece and my name was Paisie. And i was doing something important, but i wake up and i forgot. Eh, dreams! Doesn't matter anyway.

Look at this beautiful game, where the Mantoid alone did the job and it was bringing the food on the table. I mean the DEC on the deck. I mean, you understand me, i will just show you the game. Enemy was faster and had more cards, but unlucky for him, the Mantoid killed his last two position with one hit (2 Life baby!). I have also balanced the battle a bit countering his speed with my Creeping Ooze, and finally, i added one more goblin assasin to my goblin team. End of the game, predictible, me, the weak team. Not so week anymore. Plenty of life and return damage is a good combo. Just take a look at both teams: Not to mention, that today i had finally reached the Bronze II, after upgrading my Pyre summoner to level 2. which means: ...you guess right, seven, yes, SEVEN season rewards. And before i finish, did I mention that the Mantoid is a neutral card, and it can be used on amlost every combination (but i found Earth and Fire splinter to be quite lethal when this card is added, even if it costs 6 Mana). Reducing the abdominal fat efficiently - your pathway to six-pack abs Some time ago we might have accepted a beer belly as an inevitable fact of aging. But we’ve now been put on notice that as our waistlines grow, so do our health risks. Abdominal, or visceral, fat is of particular concern because it’s a key player in a variety of health problems — much more so than subcutaneous fat, the kind you can grasp with your hand. Visceral fat, on the other hand, lies out of reach, deep within the abdominal cavity, where it pads the spaces between our abdominal organs. Visceral fat has been linked to metabolic disturbances and increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In women, it is also associated with breast cancer and the need for gallbladder surgery. We know that where fat ends up is influenced by several factors, including heredity and hormones. We cannot argue with heredity, but we have many ways to influence our hormone production. The good news is that visceral fat yields fairly easily to exercise and diet, with benefits ranging from lower blood pressure to more favorable cholesterol levels. Subcutaneous fat located at the waist — the pinch-able stuff — can be frustratingly difficult to budge, but in normal-weight people, it’s generally not considered as much of a health threat as visceral fat is. Also we are learning learning that visceral fat pumps out immune system chemicals called cytokines — for example, tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-6 — that can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. These and other biochemicals are thought to have deleterious effects on cells’ sensitivity to insulin, blood pressure, and blood clotting.   So what can we do about tubby tummies? A lot, it turns out. The starting point for bringing weight under control, in general, and combating abdominal fat, in particular, is **regular moderate-intensity physical activity** — at least 30 minutes per day (and perhaps up to 60 minutes per day) to control weight. **Strength training** (exercising with weights) may also help fight abdominal fat. (This happen because decrease in muscle mass, change in hormone levels and decreased caloric need of internal organs are the three main physiological factors that slow down a person's metabolism. And one of the main reason for the increase in body fat is a decrease in metabolism.Increasing muscle mass is one of the most controllable factor, as decrease in calorie needs of internal organs occurs because they are functioning more efficiently, and tampering with the hormones is a bit more complicated.) Spot exercising, such as doing sit-ups, can tighten abdominal muscles, but it won’t get at visceral fat. Eating refined foods such as white bread and sugary foods triggers a series of events. A rapid rise in blood sugar level is followed by an increased insulin response which can cause fat to be deposited more readily. However, eating a diet rich in whole grains (which also tend to be higher in fibre) helps improve insulin sensitivity. This, in turn helps the body more efficiently use blood glucose, controls blood glucose levels and reduces fat deposition.) Replacing saturated fats and trans fats with polyunsaturated fats can also help. (Polyunsaturated fats are lipids in which the constituent hydrocarbon chain possesses two or more carbon–carbon double bonds. Polyunsaturated fat can be found mostly in nuts, seeds, fish, algae, leafy greens, and krill. "Unsaturated" refers to the fact that the molecules contain less than the maximum amount of hydrogen.) Scientists hope to develop drug treatments that target abdominal fat. For example, studies of the weight-loss medication sibutramine (Meridia), have shown that the drug’s greatest effects are on visceral fat. Rimonabant (Acomplia) — not yet FDA-approved — is the first of a new class of drugs that block a receptor in the brain that increases appetite. Red Alert - Fake Metamask Chrome extension On November 28, Diegomazo.eth Twitter user found a suspicious Metamask Chrome extension (see tweet bellow): https://twitter.com/dmazorosete/status/1332797204893937672 Despite tagging Metamask on their twitter account, there was no reply. Few days later CypherTrace alerted Metamask team and tried to take out the fake browser extension. What is worrying is that looking at the photographs it is impossible to find any difference between the fake website and the real one. Except the URL.  Conclusion: Always check URLs. The extension is only 7 days old, but you need to stay alert, as this may be only the beginning. The fake website seems to be of Russian provenience. This was even showing on the Google search, so, it is the time to check carefully every time you access your accounts as the phishing scams are also part of the online world. Except that usually you will deal with poor copies, and this time the Metamask replica was impeccable. Even the scammers get better with practice.  Take care and catch that pigeon! Microbiota - real life applications  This is the last post of the microbiota series! There are application in the food industry. Prebiotic fibers and probiotic organisms are added to infant nutrition to modulate microbiota. Lately there is a transition from prebiotic approach to synbiotic approach ( combining prebiotic fibers with specific microorganisms that can be stimulated by those prebiotic fibers). This is a breakthrough and it is already applied to the infant formula. Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria are the ones used at the moment, with other beneficial bacteria researched for future use. There are ideas for the use of synbiotics to tackle allergies or to further support development of an healthy immune system. Many people now are fully aware of the antibiotic side effects on microbiome and they want to know more about how to modulate the microbiome in a positive health direction. Lactobacilus acidophilus Bifidobacterium There are also applications in the animal health and food chain. There is a ban on antimicrobial promoters in some countries for a better quality. In hatcheries, for eggs and poultry, when there is no hen touch, faecal transplantation is used (dried poultry poop), just to mention one example. In the future there will be more methods to modulate and manipulate the microbiota. Clostridium difficile And talking about faecal transplantation, there are at least 15 stool banks in the world right now, with the Openbiome in U.S.A. being the biggest. The stools can be used in treating Clostridium difficile, assisting in research for IBS and some other diseases. Only 2.5% of the potential donors are suitable after they are tested. In Netherlands for example, the stool bank has only 8 active donors and they treated 70–80 patients until now. With this little accolade, our journey of knowledge of microbiota is finished at the moment. Microbiota - Gluten free needs and the Inflammatory Bowel Disease IBD is a group of conditions in which the colon and/or the small intestine becomes inflamed. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative diseases are the two main types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In Crohn’s disease both small and large intestine are affected, and in some rare cases even the mouth, oesophagus and the stomach. In ulcerative colitis only the large intestine and the rectum are affected. IBD is a chronic disease with two different states, a high active state of the disease called active inflammation and an inactive state called remission. In the active state the inflammation is accompanied by unpaired barrier function, so the defense mechanism is not properly working. Are there any ways for our body to keep the intestinal barrier function as good as possible? First, a layer of epithelial cells connected by tight junctions, covered with a mucus layer to protect the mucosal surface from harmful bacteria and molecules. Second, on top of this layer, we got the gut microbiota that is covering the mucus layer with the good, inoffensive microbes. IBD is emerging as a worldwide epidemic, especially in the high income countries, making researchers to think that all these diseases are mainly caused by the environment. The lifestyle in developed countries might impair the microbial colonization. There are multiple factors involver: birth at hospital, with or without caesarean delivery, decreased family sizes, decreased contact with soil organisms, increased antibiotic use, body washing with antibacterial soap and shower gel, increased use of processed foods. The gut microbiota plays a big role in priming and regulating the immune system. In IBD the microbiota changes in composition, being an essential factor driving the inflammation. Markers of IBD can be found in the microbiota, such as reduction of microbial diversity and increase in gammaproteobacteria (this group holds many potential pathogens). Gammaproteobacteria Adherent-invasive microbes like E.Coli and Fusiobacterium can be found, combined with a decrease of beneficial ones (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and F. prausnitzii). All these signs can be used to diagnose the disease. These changes can affect the microbiota as a whole, decreasing the short chain fatty acids like Butyrate, increasing the oxidative stress, causing imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defences, causing tissue damage. Attempts to restore microbiota composition using microbiota based therapies showed positive and promising results, causing remission in IBD, but each patient response is different, and faecal microbiota transplant methods are not superior to the current therapies. But microbiota based therapies can be used in the future to treat and diagnose IBD. Next post will be the last post of the microbiota series, and it will be about the medical therapy. Microbiota - Next gen probiotics This next generation probiotics can be helpful in new personalised therapies. They are made from microorganisms used to improve health, you can found them in foods and supplements. The ones sold today are mainly lactic acid producing bacteria like bifidobacteria and lactobacillus, isolated from yogurt and milk. Lactobacillus reuteri  The next generation probiotics can come from the human gut microbiota and they will be used as a medical therapy instead of only improving health. They will be used in conjunction with bacterial cultivation, genome sequencing and tools to modify bacterial genomes. Their range is extended by our ever increasing knowledge of the composition and function of the human gut microbiome. The Next-Gen probiotics are coming from healthy humans. Take Clostridium Difficile infection (CDI) for example, which is prevented by the healthy microbiota acting as a barrier. However, using antibiotics (this being a major risk factor), can be weakened. We can use antibiotic also as an effective treatment for CDI, but because of the consequences mentioned before, relapse occurs on up to 30% of the patients. There were attempts of successfully eliminate CDI via faecal transplantation, and one of the more promising species was identified for future use. It is called Lactobacillus reuteri and it is a bacterium producing an antibacterial compound called reuterin, using glycerol. This bacteria has antibiotic resistance, preventing the recurrence of CDI. Other promising candidates are Faecalibacterium prausnitii, Eubacterium halii, Bacteroides Fragilis and Akkermansia muciniphila. Take the last one, Akkermansia muciniphila, which is present in low levels in the intestinal tract of the individuals who have Diabetes type 2 or are obese. Tested on mice, reduced the body weight, enhanced glucose tolerance and decreased the presence of endotoxins in blood. The major difference from the actual probiotics is that the new ones will originate from the human microbiota and will be used for personalised therapies (if a patient is lacking certain beneficial microbes, they will be administered). But they are not on the market yet and further research is needed at the moment. Microbiota - the faecal transplant benefits The faecal transplant os a very good tool to prove a causative role of our gut microbiome in curing different diseases. Because of this reason, the interest in faecal microbiota transplant is rising. We mentioned some research done on mice, but this is a well known practice, and we have a Chinese medical manual from the 4th century A.C. describing the procedure done on humans, as a remedy for food poisoning. But how do we do it today? A healthy donor donates a stool sample, which is tested for certain diseases, frozen and given to the patient later by a tube or as capsules, in order to reach the small intestine. Enema can be also used. This is working by restoring a gut microbiome that it is out of balance, bringing equilibrium and leaving hardly any room for pathogens. However, use of antibiotics and some other factors can disrupt the balance, allowing the pathogens like clostridium difficile to cause infections (symptoms are chronic gut inflammation and persistent diarrhoea). Using antibiotics to cure an infection with clostridium difficile is not effective, as the disease is recurring, and the bacteria is becoming resistant to antibiotics, because this clostridium difficile can colonize an altered microbiota composition. By restoring the microbiota composition, 90% of the patients were cured. In this case, the faecal transplant is more efficient that antibiotics. Because the gut microbiota of a healthy donor is introduced, restoring the balance and breaking the cycle of the disease. When the healthy microbiota colonize the inside, no more room is left for Clostridium Difficile. Small results were also found in patients with diabetes type 2. Many scientists work to replace the fecal transplants with an odourless mix of bacterial strains derived from the human fecal material. Microbiota - An approach to personalized nutrition Everyone knows that we should eat more fibers and less saturated fats, but personalized nutrition is more than that. We are talking about choosing the healthy nutrition that it is different for different people. You need to take in account diseases you had or got, the genetic and physiological differences, character, habits and social environment. Each of us is different, and our response to diet or even the same dietary component is different. Let’s say caffeine for example: one can drink it after dinner and sleep well at night, while another cannot sleep if is drinking coffee after lunch. Your body and behaviour is complex, and it will determine how you respond to a new diet. One research group from Israel tried to make a prediction based on one’s glycemic response ( the glycemic response to food is the effect of that food on the blood glucose levels). They found out that different people react very different towards identical food components. The 800 participants that their blood sugar measured every 5 minutes with a special device, and they also used and app to report what and when they ate, when they sleep and how long and when they exercise. In the end their stool samples were collected and their composition and activity of the gut microbiota was measured. After all the data was collected, they made an algorithm that could successfully predict the blood glucose response for the participants. This was also used to successfully predict the response of 100 new participants, so this algorithm can be used to predict someone response to a dietary component and to advise a personalized diet. The conclusion was that some people respond very different to the same food product, so for these people some diets will not work, or even have the exact opposite effect. For one of the subjects, they got a bigger response eating lean fish that eating ice cream. This can happen because of our genetics, our lifestyle and our microbiota is different. The response to food is due to all these personal settings. The ability of a person to measure blood glucose levels is a key factor in the development of diabetes and obesity. A specific diet for a weight loss usually aim to control glucose levels and yet different people are told to use the same diets. Prevotella In the future is possible that the personalized diet will be a common occurrence, helping us to be healthier and live longer. Microbiota - About synbiotics Synbiotics are a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics that beneficially affect the host. By combining these tow in a food product, this will lead to a better chance of survival and activity of microbes in the gut. The interaction for two or more things in order to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects it is called synergy. Synbiotics are a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics that beneficially affect the host, with a better survival chance of the probiotics during the passage through the large intestine, avoiding to be made inactive by the high acidic environment present in our stomach, to increase the overall gut health. Once in the intestine, they can start fermenting right away, increasing the activity and growth or the microbiota. The prebiotic can also affect the stool consistency and the bowel movement. Probiotic strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are combined with mixtures of fibers (FOS, GOS, inulin) to create a synbiotic. Synbiotics were tested to help different gut diseases like inflammatory bowel , irritable bowel syndrome, cancer, liver diseases and allergies.
