The Changing Definition of Bayani and Bayanihan
According to dr Zeus Salazar, the local concept of "bayani" has a different value and has a richer concept than its supposed western counterpart. In line with this "bayanihan" can be considered as a form of active heroism of an individual or group of people by helping others without expecting anything in return. The achievement of one is also an achievement of the many and vice versa, says Salazar. The story is about the community helping each other out and times of need both physically and financially.

One of our society's interpretations of the word hero is that means to "save a life or to sacrifice one's life for the sake of one's homeland" as for what Rizal put into standards of these. This word, however, had a deeper meaning implying that only those who are willing to suffer and sacrifice themselves for the good of the country are worthy of the title, hero. Being referred to as a hero necessitates a greater display of bravery. The term bayanihan literally means "to be in a bayan" and it refers to a spirit of communal unity, cooperation, and work toward a common goal. The bayanihan is a Filipino tradition derived from the word which means in ocean town in Filipino. Weather considered heroes wear like those who gave their lives in a bottle or those who use their intellectual intelligence to create a novel in combat, the situation was very different but then that it is now since there were present adversaries. Well-known personalities were forced to occupy the Philippines. As a result, today's battle with reality is vastly different from that of the past, which is why Salazar was right in his assessment of bestowing the title hero and heroism on people who don't have to take their own life.
Putting this subject into a perfect epitome of a hero, On my perception, apart from well-known figures such as Jose Rizal, our compatriots serving abroad are the overseas Filipino workers who are now considered modern heroes. My older brother, Dominick, a typical worker is one of our country's modern heroes. Since, despite the pandemic, he chose to renew his contract and sacrifice his sweat and blood in a distant country far from his own family. Apart from having the inborn Filipino traits of being hardworking and respectful, he is also reputable for being an honest servant. This struggle, in contrast to many of the country's well-known heroes, who use violence and ingenuity in writing, Dominick uses his own capabilities, diligence, and dedication to continue to strive for his goal.
Applying this situation was solely stated that it proves Salazar's point of not all heroes need to shed blood to call one. After a person's death, it's already hard to see the presence of the characteristics that they have to qualify them as heroes. It is enough to make such a significant contribution to the country that many people regard them as a hero. The small act of kindness that an individual performed for his fellow men or any selfless act performed with virtue can already be considered heroic. Giving a person the title of hero is not always about using violence or knowledge against the war or even taking one's life for their country since many virtues are considered poor should people who became the patient's simply by providing support, health, and action to those who are in need.
