Have You Become A Research Leader?

2 24

As I was looking through my files on my laptop earlier, I came across this one folder which contained all of the photos and videos from my senior year.

Taken last 2019 Christmas Party

Looking at the videos again is pretty nostalgic, it was indeed that the most memorable part of being a student was during high school, and there is no doubt in that, our smiles in each photo we appear to be genuinely happy.

But before anything else, I'd like to extend my gratitude to my sponsors for their support, and you can visit their accounts to read interesting piece

In the education system, research papers were one of the requirements for graduation, and we were assigned to do a research paper as a group. During my grade 10 and 11 years, I learned that having friends in a research paper group is not a good idea. But I was tested again in my last year as a Senior High School student when each of us was assigned to form a research group for the entire school year in grade 12. When my friends handed me the paper stating that we were in one group and that I was the one they assigned to be their leader, I couldn't complain as they already passed the paper to our research adviser. Since we all have laptops, access to the internet and one of our groups has a printing machine, I tried to be an optimistic person at first. There has also been no cost issue as we began depositing money every day (my groupmate was assigned to collect 5 pesos per day) for the fund set aside to be used for prints and snacks from the beginning.

This was taken after our Chapter 1-3 defense

As time goes by, of course, I couldn't handle my own frustration from my group mates to the point where, as a leader, I took all of my group members to the faculty office to inform our research adviser that we were having problems in terms of cooperations, even though they are my friends I couldn't let them be as carefree as they wanted for the entire school year. Some of my groupmates received a note of warning from our research adviser, it's a relief that our mentor listen to the problem I approached him for.

We're doing fine until the day of our written paper's finalization, there's a lot of revision to be done, and I couldn't handle figuring out each part that needed to be fixed. There were six of us in the group, but only two of us were occupied with revisions. The rest of them can be called "dumbell", one of the trending terminologies back then thanks to a short film released by KPL on social media. It is the type of groupmates that is solely reliant on the leader and the hard-working members. It's likely that it's unavoidable in the group, but it's frustrating. It's gotten to the point where I haven't slept in three days for revision while some of my groupmate is having overnight swimming. Such great rants they got from me the day we meet as they couldn't do some of the things I asked of them to do, they were already taught how to do some of the parts given to them, but they chose not to help. I was frustrated for their own good, it's not just me who's having problems but soon they soon too when they don't learn how these academic papers needed to be done. It's a good thing that the leader has the upper hand when it comes to allocating a grade to the group, and it's somehow helped me feel satisfied from all the hardship that I made.

Our last photo taken after we succeeded on defending our thesis paper

Apart from the things that made me furious with my research groupmates, I had a great school year, however, I'm not sure I'm capable of handling groups and remaining calm in all situations. And after the defense, we just talk it out because it's already all in the past, and the important thing for us is that we defended our thesis before graduation, so it's still a success for my leadership sacrifices. It's also their loss as they refused to help all along, in the end, they are the ones who have no experience conducting background research and I hope they will learn what every leader went through now that we are all in college.

So, now that I'm in college,  I'm also hoping to have a reliable partner in doing a research paper even though it's impossible but I'm still hoping. I've also realized over the years that I'm not good at handling my patience, that I'm short-tempered, besides I'm not comfortable working with others. In short, I prefer to do things individually in my own space it was indeed my flaws but still, I needed to hone my skills in cooperation and social communication for future purposes.

I experienced being a research leader in all groups. Like literally all. Well, I'm choosing my group mates to make sure we can finish and do the research well without much hassles.

That's lucky that you were able to choose who will be your groupmate, but it's all in the past all those hardships also helps me to enhance more of my skills.
