As we go to the exciting part, some might get interested to know what was the business in keeping rabbits. In a larger sense, I do not possess something; if I don't see a potential within this, I won't come and invest in something I know I will lose soon enough. I could see that some of us had already started the rabbits; others just wanted to procure maybe. These will help you decide if there is a business opportunity to raise one and why you should also start your own.
If you want to start any business, even a small or large enterprise, you should have a first Plan, then comes the capital and other things to consider. In planning, you had to look beyond the four-side box. That's how the business shall start first. Look for an opportunity even a tiny piece of it could come beyond the extraordinary.
Also, consider that all investment is risky, and can not every business will be looked at like others. That makes the industry differ; the more the owner thinks, the more it will look and define successful than others. Also, I am a planner of my own; it's a survival where others shall not just know my plans; my recipe will always be mine. Another secret of a successful business owner? They share ideas, but they never share a secret, lol.
So, I will share an idea today that is not a secret.
Better start your business in meat production:
I suggest you look at the business where you will sell meats; some might question why not breed small rabbits instead? I shall answer that as the discussion will furthermore be evaluated.
As a starter, you should always look for high returns; meat could give you the topic. In the Philippines, the Department of Agriculture (DA) had mandated that lapan production is guaranteed to be safe and clean. There was no leptospirosis in the meat for some issues that rabbits and Rodents are the same. No, they were different; the rabbit is ruminant and purely grass eater; unlike mice or any rodents, they are scavengers.
A kilogram of lapan must be sold for P400.00 ($7.69) in the dress weight; in the local breed, at the age of 3-4 months, the rabbit will gain a standard weight of 2500 grams live weight or rabbit that is alive. While hybrid rabbits will gain 2500 grams in 2 months, a prominent view of why planning to keep hybrid rabbits is better.
In a simple computation, one healthy rabbit that was 2.5 kg in live weight could give a conversion of 2.0 kg when it comes to dressing weight and could sell for P800.00 ($15.38), and in visual, you might invest P400.00 in ($7.69) in all the feedings you gave, but it could be lower than if you have given them grasses instead.
For those who questioned rabbit meats, imagine that pork and chicken are so vulnerable to disease and viruses because they were too much in eating commercial pellet feeds, while rabbits still eat grasses. Whose meat is healthier then?.
Better think if you want breeding business:
Breeding is so much easy in rabbits but never be accessible. On another side, they could be doubled and reproduced from 5 to 12 kits (small rabbits), and they had no estrus period (Paglalandi), and the failure of others who quits rabbits is that they produce too much, yet they cant sell in all. Some had to bargain the price, just at least receive the initial investment and stop the operations. This is one of the reasons why I said you must start with meat instead.
Let's have simple computations over hybrid and local breeds.
In local breed, they are more prolific than hybrids, and locals are better parenthood than a hybrid.
One female rabbit could give you six babies; some might give up to 10. But expect that mortality is present because of nutrients, and she will hold pregnancy for 30 days and again raise her young for another 30 days more. Then she was again ready to breed. One rabbit could be pregnant in a year cycle and give birth at least six times a year.
Simple mathematics operation. One female rabbit could give me six or more babies for six breeding per year.
Thirty-six tiny babies for me. I had five female breeders, so I could expect that I would have 180 heads of rabbits in one year as now. That's a lot when I will focus on breeding and multiplications, my input capital and output interest are computed as high-insignificant in my business plan, so this will bring me chaos.
In the business as a breeder owner, you can't just sell what babies you have. You must also learn to categized them as either an F1 or F1, H1 or H2, Upgraded or local? You must also show them the pedigree.
Also, if I will buy a rabbit from a breeder, I shall ask many questions first. What was the breed? If the seller even doesn't know what the species doesn't buy. What is the genetic line (Local, Indo, US, Hyla)? If they don't know what line think hundred times. So in the larger message, you should come inbreeding when you already know everything in their stages.
Why am I saying this? consider it the picture of what reality looks like in starting a rabbit business. The issue now is that more breeders and keepers are just signing out because they don't know how to market rabbits.
I am not an expert, so I make plans; as I said, I share ideas, not a secret. The second part is processing rabbits; I introduced you to some of the content of my business plan hehe. I won't share the entire range, but I will try to give you my vision; thanks for reading.
