Jane was born in a poor and dysfunctional family. Her father is a gambler and her mother is a martyr. She grew up listening to fights, quarrels, shouts and screams coming from her parents. Almost every day, they would fight to their heart's content. When her mother is away, her father would instantly turn to her and let out all his wrath towards her. Things like this are the norm in the family. It's a prison of torture.

When she started going to school, she thought she could escape the torture somehow. Yet, life isn't on her side. Some of her classmates disliked her because she's too poor. She is embarrassed by her situation, so she always keeps her head down and keeps silent. By having long messy hair and a gloomy face, people keep their distance towards her. They think she's creepy and a weird child. But other girls are brave enough to approach her. Instead of making friends, they make fun of her. One of them is Claire, her neighbor who always saw her cry. She always calls her a crybaby ever since and even told her that she looks like a ghost. This kind of comment spread all over the neighborhood and at school.

There are also other incidents that happened unexpectedly because they get close to her. Like a classmate getting sick because they are seatmates or people who stumbled down when they pass by at her. Claire's disliked towards her made her life even worse. There were even rumors spreading across the neighborhood and at school that she is bad luck that is why her family is poor and her classmates got failing grades or got sick when they are near her.

She's been the source of fun for Claire. Sometimes, Claire would bring her gang and locked her up in the bathroom. Then, they will splash a pale of water at her inside and throw garbages at her. They will vandalize her seats and her things. They will throw crumpled paper at her every time they pass by. They would even call her "Freak" in the crowd, so people will distance themselves from her. Even the teachers believed the rumors and didn't want to get involved in her. No one has ever looked at her as a person, like a normal girl, as their fellow student, or talk to her like a normal friend.

Well, maybe until that day...

There is a boy who transferred to their school and he is liked by everyone. She knew that he keeps glancing at her but he was intercepted by his friends. Well, that's a normal scene already. She has experienced a lot of that. Things become different a little starting from that day where she cried all her frustrations at the park alone. She never have thought that someone would ask her like that. That someone is that guy —Jeff. She was just asked if she's fine for the first time in her life. Things like this never happened to her before, though. Shocked and confused, she ran away without uttering a single response.

Maybe he didn't know everything about her yet, she thought.

A few days after that encounter, she is invited by Claire to a classmates' birthday party. Probably to make fun of her but she can't refuse them either. They'll make her life even worse if she tries to fight back. She went there but luckily they were all busy and they didn't notice her. Claire eventually found her but she's also too busy having fun and ignores her. She felt a huge relief with that. At least, Claire knows she had come. She gets out of the crowd and went to the back to be alone. No one knows what they will do to her when they think of something fun there and spotted her.

She heard two boys approaching, so she hides somewhere that is dark to remain unnoticed. They started splashing bleach all over the laundry and suddenly there's another guy that confronts them. It is Jeff. They splash the bleach at him and it hits his eyes. He is screaming in pain and tried to walk away but he bumps on the other guy who holds a lighter. The lighter1 slips of the guy's hand and fell onto the dry laundry, causing a fire. No matter how much she wants to help, there's nothing she can do, anyway. She's born in a weak build.

When the fire spreads among the other laundry and to the side of the house, that's when Jeff felt it and tried to shout for help. The other guy hits him on his back with a baseball bat, making him fell to the ground and lost consciousness. When they make sure that he wouldn't wake up, they walk away. Jane can't take it anymore just by watching him like that and then, grab that opportunity to help Jeff.

She ran towards him and tried to pull him outside the laundry area. It's not that easy for her since Jeff is heavy and she's weak. She shouted for help as louder as she can. Maybe they dislike her but they like Jeff. She knows that they will help him no matter what. While she's pulling Jeff and shouting, rushing footsteps are coming towards them. She shouted more for help. She didn't mind it even if it hurts her throat. Suddenly, she just heard a loud thud coming from her back and slowly her visons get blurry, as well as her consciousness.

The next thing when she woke up, she was already in the hospital. A nurse was checking on her and there is no one else. Half of her body has a third-degree burn. She had to stay there for days but no one visits her, not even her parents. She was waiting for the time to pass by while lying on the hospital bed when the nurse lead a couple into her room. They introduced themselves and said that they were Jeff's parents. They thanked her for saving Jeff. People at the party said that they heard a girl's voice shouting for help that's why they have been able to come to the rescue, though it's a little late. Since her parents didn't bother to visit her even for a second, the couple offered to pay for her bills as compensation for helping their son. They even bring her food as often as they can.

Days have passed and she was back home. Her parents didn't even bother to ask what happened. She stayed in her room with nothing to do but lie down on her bed. The next day, news has traveled fast across the neighborhood. Two high school boys were found dead soaked in a bathtub full of bleach with a carved smile on their faces. Night after night cases like this has been happening. Somehow, Jane is wishing that the murderer will come to visit her and end her pathetic life, too. Having a worse reputation and worse burns on her body, she thought that she had become totally useless.

On a silent lonely night, her windows suddenly opened. She wakes up by the disturbance. The gust of wind hits her face making her smell something rusty, foul, and something like... Bleach? Is her wish becoming true now? Suddenly, a manly silhouette showed up behind the curtains carrying a knife that shines along with the moonlight.

"You should try to smile, Jane..." He said in a low-toned whisper making her whole body shivering.
