Rants: Experience With Vampire Insects
Friday was supposed to be a happy day, the start of the weekend where I don’t have to do anything major, rest and watch some football games. I had decided to nap a bit around 4:22pm only to wake up two hours later shivering with cold and with high body temperature. I suppose the weekend had something else in store for me.
I managed to drag myself to the kitchen to boil rice I’d have for dinner and it took me a relatively long time to walk such as short distance between my room and the kitchen, then it really hit me that I had falling ill while I was trying to give my body the rest it need.
As Nigerians, the most common illness for us is Malaria. Anytime we fall ill, it is the first thing that usually come to our mind. Can’t say I blame us, with the rampant mosquitoes feasting on our blood and at the same time injecting sporozites of plasmodium parasite into our bloodstream, it is easy to think that. While only the female anopheles mosquito can actually spread the pathogens that causes malaria, it is hard to know which species of mosquito is feasting on you, because they are hard to see with our naked eyes.
FUN FACT: Only female mosquitoes feed on human blood, the males feed on nectar of plant.
I remember on Monday when we got to our lodge, we knew the hostel would be infested with a lot of mosquitoes considering everything was right for them to breed and multiply easily. They flourish in places with stagnant water and bushes. And everything was right for them. I must say that these are one of the biggest mosquitoes I have seen.
What is even disturbing was the fact that we used insecticide in the entire hostel three nights ago, but it would seem they are immune to its toxicity. We could still see them flying around in our room, looking for blood to feed on the same night we used the insecticide. I would have doubted the effectiveness of the insecticide itself and perhaps would have spent a lot of time resisting the urge to contact the company to log a complaint about the substandard product they have in the market. But I had seen some dead cockroaches in the room, and that made it easier for me to look the other way.
Again, I asked myself after I had fallen ill and suspected nothing but the effect of being bitten by mosquitoes. Why would one buy insecticide in this country if not majorly for mosquitoes? So, if you are making an insecticide, even if it doesn’t kill any insect, it should at least kill mosquitoes. Or you can just make different types and state categorically that this is for roaches, and this is for bloodsucking insects. I am still considering whether or not to call the company, let’s see how it goes. 😅😅
I woke up this morning felling a bit better than when I slept yesterday, but with my mouth sour, my head aching and my body temperature unusual. I have to go to the drugstore to get some drugs so I can feel better before Monday. But ideally, I am supposed to do tests first to know what exactly the problem is, because I also suspect it could be typhoid fever too. The only good thing about my current state is that it happened during the weekend.
Sadly for the mosquitoes, they have declared a war and I will see it through and through. I’ll get the two insecticide we bought and spray both in the room later. Let me see how they survive this time. Then again, it is their nature to suck blood and it is the only way they know how to survive.
In conclusion, there was a time I thought about companies producing an insecticide that would target only the female mosquitoes, thus, making them go extinct altogether. And I hope I haven’t bored you with my ranting.

Why not try incense and use insect repellants. We use incense here all the time and so far mosquitoes don't bother us.
