So we see that the English foundation of primary or secondary level students in this country is very weak. According to a national level survey, the reading of English subjects by students in grades three to four in primary is not as expected.
A significant number of students have very poor English language skills. They cannot read and write English well. And at the secondary or higher secondary level, it is true that there is a great demand for expert English teachers. They are more interested in teaching soft-spoken students in the coaching center than in teaching English in the classroom. So parents and students register their (students') names in these coaching centers. There is more trade in education than teaching as much as possible for a teacher with many students in a batch.
Parents sighed with satisfaction as they were sent to learn English by an expert teacher. But how much English students are learning can be easily understood from a statistic. In 2014, out of 40,575 candidates in the admission test of the Faculty of Arts of Dhaka University, only two qualified for admission in the English department. In 2016, 90 percent of the candidates in the admission test of ‘C’ unit failed in English. Educators have also expressed frustration over the state of the English language in the country.
