Neighbors.
Unless you are like a hermit or something, you can't live anywhere without them, whether it is in a building or a hood or a gated community, you'll always have neighbors, some good, some bad, some worse.
I have a selection of all of the above, the good, those who help, who keep to their business and are always considerate to others. The ones who gossip, who always are asking you for things but when you need them they hide behind their doors, and there are the ones who make the impossible to get what you have no matter what.
But this article is not about them, is about the consequences of being good and what happens when you stand up for yourself when you're being screwed over by others.
My next-door neighbor has lived in that house for over fifteen years; she is a police officer and a well-behaved one, a shocker in my country. The house isn't hers, it is a rental, but she has kept it in good condition and has always been on time with her rent.
She lived there with an abusive man, he was, is an alcoholic and a bully, so she left for a few years while the man kept living there and she kept paying rent. She came back from time to time until he tried to rape her, so she left scared not knowing what to do.
Let me tell you, she might be the police, but she is a woman and she was frightened by that occurrence. Three months ago she came back determined to get her life back, and her home back. A police patrol had to come here to get him out because she was so over the top drunk that he even jumped from roof to roof, it was crazy!
The guy left and the real trouble began; he talked with everyone including the owners of the house to get her out, and these people tried to do so by force, while she wasn't even in the house they tried to break in. She reported the incident and started a legal process with the owners because there's a law here that states that after a certain time the eviction can not be performed as easily, and let alone, be done by force. It's even worse because, due to the Covid quarantine, the evictions are forbidden, so they can throw her out.
Well, since the last hearing, they've been doing some sort of surveillance, to see if there is something wrong or if she is doing something wrong, and the only thing is that she has chickens and police come in and out.
This morning I was in the shower thinking about what happened early this morning and something didn't add up. My house has other points of access, and the setting mom found wasn't right, so I thought:
Could it be that they were trying to get into that house instead of ours?
I told my mom to call her, to let her know what happened, and at first, mom refused, she didn't think that it was anything to worry about to the point of bothering our neighbor, so I said:
Call her, you don't know if they were aiming for her instead of us...
Something clicked and instantly she got up and called her. As it turns out, I was right, and for the last three nights, someone has been lurking and trying to get in there.
Why?
We don't know for sure, I have some hypotheses about it and none are good, we are talking about police officers, they are armed and might not be dangerous, but:
What might happen if someone does break in and they fire their guns?
Or someone takes their guns?
Could it be that someone is pushing her buttons to make her snap and make a mistake?
She has the law by her side and didn't put up with all the crap the owners and her ex-boyfriend have thrown at her, and as a result, she now lives in constant fear and uncertainty.
It's not fair, and it's not right. We can't do much, just advise her and comfort her, but we can't afford to get in the middle of it, especially now that's becoming more dangerous, and I have a terrible feeling that it will not end well for her.
I'm not much of a prayer but I hope this ends soon and well for her, I mean, she has been through so much in her life, she deserves to live peacefully, and I hope she someday she can.

That is a terrible situation for her. And you please stay out of it as much as possible, just comfort her if needed and yes that was your house they mistakenly took for hers. So be careful, that is not a request rebeca.
