Surgery is life-saving and life-changing. We have all either had surgery or likely know someone dear to us that has been under the knife at some stage of their life. Indeed, a study published in 2002 calculated Americans undergo an average of 9.2 surgical procedures per lifetime (1).
However, in many parts of the world, surgery is something entirely different to what you may imagine. Surgery is either inaccessible, unsafe, unaffordable or simply not obtainable to the vast majority of the world's population. It is estimated 5 billion of the world's population does not have access to safe, timely emergency surgery, resulting in needless suffering throughout the world (2). As an orthopaedic surgeon myself, who has worked in 5 continents including the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, or low resource settings in Pakistan and Cambodia, the untreated surgical pathology that people are suffering with across the world on a daily basis is heartbreaking and unforgettable.
For decades, the world has focused on health programs in low and middle income countries to combat infectious disease and other chronic diseases, leaving surgical care completed neglected and in a state of disarray.
However, since 2015, there has been a growing movement of passionate people and organisations now working together to overcome this huge inequality.
One.Surgery (https://one.surgery) is a non-profit organisation that now aims to unite this powerful global movement. We are an organisation dedicated to improving access to safe surgery worldwide using a combination of surgical experience in low resource settings, innovative web technology and story telling (3).
Among other innovative tools, One.Surgery has recognized the parallels between cryptocurrency and the global surgery philosophy, and as a result, has newly embraced bitcoin cash to power some of its online projects and help spread the message of love, universal healthcare and border-less finances.
One.Surgery has recently launched a community blog (https://one.surgery/blog) dedicated to global surgery, where we now encourage our users to embrace cryptocurrency and pay qualifying authors in bitcoin cash (writers in low and middle income countries) for unique articles related to universal healthcare and the global surgery movement.
We have already had growing success in spreading the message of bitcoin cash to users in the world who had never previously heard of cryptocurrency let alone BCH! We have sent bitcoin cash to medical students and practicing doctors in Tunisia, India, Nigeria, Brazil to an otherwise crypto-naive population. We believe the shared philosophies between cryptocurrency and surgery intertwine these two essential worldwide movements and we believe One.Surgery can spread the message of bitcoin cash far beyond its traditional "tech" boundaries and also use it practically to power healthcare projects.
Here are our shared philosophies:
Universal currency and universal healthcare - The decentralized cryptocurrency is obtainable by anyone in the world, with no registrations or traditional banking bureaucracy. Similarly, every person in the world should have access to universal, safe surgery without exception.
Secure - Crytocurrency transactions are secure, and difficult to counterfeit or defraud. Similarly, anyone undergoing surgery should have the security to know their care is not undertaken by under qualified healthcare staff.
Border-less - Cryptocurrency disregards political boundaries. Similarly, global surgery aims to overcome country boundaries, uniting the passion for surgical care beyond boundaries, sharing clinical skills, knowledge, research and love.
Transparent - Transactions in cryptocurrency are transparent and open for investigation. Surgery, in all its form, should also offer transparency between the care received and the outcomes achieved, for every patient.
Innovation - Cryptocurrency continues to evolve with innovative, disruptive technology. Global surgery is also bringing innovative technology to surgical care worldwide, including advances in treatment and research collaboration.
Community powered - Cryptocurrency is powered by an increasing community developing and spreading the technology worldwide. Global surgery is also powered by a passionate, dedicated community spreading its love.
We are now looking for moral support from the cryptocurrency and bitcoin cash community, as we believe our movements are equally aligned. We are openly transparent about our BCH usage, our wallet is viewable and transaction history on the blockchain.
Feel free to join us, support us, or simply send love our way!
