The Only Way Out

The entrance to the tunnel was his only way out. He ran inside the tunnel thinking that he could lose the people that were chasing him. But he didn’t expect the tunnel to be closed out on one end by the debris of a landslide. He could see the light from the outside through the little holes but the debris was just too thick and heavy for him to even try to dig his way out.

He could try but he was afraid to lift up the wrong stone and make everything crumble and fall atop of him.

He just sat down for a bit and looked back. For now, he was safe, he could hear no one coming fast.

He could only hear the loud thumping of his chest and his panting. He was trying to catch his breath. He was thinking about his gym trainer. He's trying to thank him that he was able to strengthen his stamina and endurance, if not for him, he might as well lay dead for the people chasing him. And what would these people do to him is just unimaginable.

They would eat him alive. Scratch that. They would devour him like savages. Because in all essence of the word, these people are zombies. They aren't living humans anymore. They were humans before but they were infected by a virus that made them lose their minds and crave people's blood and brains. The virus has a funny way of spreading too.

It's not airborne, it's not spread through bodily fluids. One can be infected when he or she is bitten by another infected creature.

I don't know why it's like that. How could I? I wasn't the one who created the drug that made it possible for humans to turn into zombies in the first place.

He recalled the story his grandfather told him many times before. During their time as soldiers, they used the subways or the tunnels as hideouts. According to him, there were secret passages in these places where one could stay and survive for even a year. These places are stocked with food and supplies to last for a while.

Carefully, he tried to make his way around the tunnel. He was feeling the sidewalls for crevices or doors. He couldn't use light because he dropped his phone when he was trying to run away from the zombies he encountered.

The creatures chasing after him weren't runners. They walked ever slowly like they had an awful combination of limps. He just ran as fast as he could because he was just so scared and who the heck in their right mind will wait for the zombies chasing after them.

At last, he felt something protruding from the wall. It felt cold to his touch but he felt warm inside because it felt like a doorknob.

He tried to shimmy it open but it was locked. Or maybe it was just stuck because it hasn't been opened for years.

He struggled to open it and he stopped when he heard footsteps coming near him. There were a lot of footsteps.

He frantically tried to open the jammed door and he even tried to kick it.

He was so desperate but it was too late.

A zombie got ahold of him. And as he was being devoured by the zombies, the door finally open as he was pulling it. And then he saw as light reflected on it, written on the door in bold letters the word "PULL". He was trying to push the goddamn thing

What a fatal mistake.

And here's another freewriting article made possible by the ever-wonderful app: The Most Dangerous Writing App. I kid you not, this app tests your limit but it hones your skills in writing. I was able to come up with this Korean show, I meant zombie scene in just under 15 minutes.

Usually, going with the pace of how I write, I would only have finished a single paragraph in those 15 minutes. That's how distracted I could get. So this app is really helpful to me. It wouldn't let me get my fingers off the keyboard for more than 3 seconds so I am forced to work continuously.

Plus, it gave me the prompt: The entrance to the tunnel was his only way out...

And it's what I came up with it. It just so happens that I was watching Happiness before I tried writing.
