Self-motivation is a powerful tool, and it lies within us, but only if we choose to use it. Some of our actions and decisions are results of self-motivation.
Take cooking for example. We can have all the cooking utensils we need in the kitchen and all the recipes online, but if we do not have the self-motivation to cook, the utensils will continue to sit and wait for us.
And as the saying goes, you can't force a horse or a cow to drink water, though you can lead them to the water source. It is pretty much the same concept. People can try to motivate us or influence us to do something but if we are not self-motivated to do it, nothing will happen.
True, self-motivation can be quite lonely sometimes. We talk to ourselves, we push ourselves, we pat ourselves on the back and we cheer ourselves up. But when we succeed in completing the job at hand, the effects to our self-esteem is priceless.
One of the ways that we can motivate ourselves is to first watch sitcoms and comedies or listen or dance to upbeat songs. When we allow ourselves to let go and release our energy, laughing out loud to jokes, to the ways that we dance, we will feel better altogether. The happy hormones will influence every part of our body and cps (cells psychological sync) to really get down to the things that we are thinking of to do and to doing them.

Self-motivation is indeed lonely. Sometimes it makes me feel like I am crazy, talking to myself. It is also tiring. Mentally tired even though physically, I am not.
