A Reflection To An Unlivable Wage

Restaurants are one of the growing businesses lately, and entrepreneurs got hooked on the idea of this trend. Many started opening and hiring people for the workforce and operations, like waiters and crews.

And one of the recent matters connected to this industry is the unlivable wages for the crews. There was a documentary Adam Yamaguchi worked with, and it is about the wages and tips received by restaurant employees from Indiana.

Upon watching the whole documentary, I felt disturbed and saddened by the employees' situations who only wanted to survive daily. Most workers are women, and there are reasons why they chose this field instead of looking for other jobs out there. Some of them mentioned that the tips they receive from customers could make them survive.

Women primarily work on this job because they are good at handling people. They have better skills and interest in the kitchen, and some find the work easy and chill. According to some women interviewed, they love this job more because of their relationships with customers. They did not experience it in the positions they had before.

As I finished the video, I tried to think about its title. And I came up with a few realizations from the stories I heard. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the economy and business industries in the world. Sadly, employees became the target to get back and keep businesses running. Some restaurant workers are only getting around $2.13 or less per hour in Indiana.

We cannot deny that the prices of products and essentials are higher compared in the last years. It only means that the cost of living increased, but wages did not. The title is perfect for the documentary because computing and comparing the recent prices of our daily needs showed that the minimum wage they receive is not enough. Some have to pay for electricity, water, and apartment and buy food for their family.

In every job done, there are compensations, but some are not enough. Honestly, I find it unfair to the employees. The amount of money they get per hour and the tips from the customers can only shoulder their daily needs. But, what about taking good care of their employees?

I remember a quotation from Harding Lawrence where he said his views about compensation and finding the work you like. I have a different perspective on them because of the people who shared their stories in the documentary. They love their jobs and enjoy what they do, yet the compensation does not follow. It depends on the situation and the employer too. Some may be lucky to get into the work they like and receive reasonable compensation. On the contrary, some people on the other corner do not have the same opportunity.

Jobs at restaurants are not as easy as you think. It is why business owners and employers should look at the bigger picture. The workforce is coming from their employees, from cooking to handling customers. And it only means that they deserve a better amount of compensation.

This article is really quite effective, there were few points in your article which never occurred to me before, and the most fascinating point you have reflected was "after covid 19 when many people have lost jobs, nad pushed into poverty rather than being relieved after lifting up of lockdown they are facing the inflation".

Thank you for reading and explaining your points. I agree, there are a lot of people who got affected by the pandemic. And we cannot deny the fact that some of them are friends, relatives, and everyone around us.
