Irena Sendler mother of Holocaust children

Irena Sendler was born in Warsaw on 15 February 1910 and died on 12 May 2008.

Mlada Irena

She was a Polish social worker organizer of an organization to save Jews from Nazi persecution and destruction. This organization was founded in 1942. Irena, with the help of about 25 Jewish members, rescued about 2,500 Jewish children by secretly taking them out of the Warsaw ghetto, providing them with false documents and accommodation in homes outside the ghetto.

Irena has been sympathetic to Jews since she was a child and opposed their discrimination. Her father died of typhus in 1917, which he contracted while helping Jewish patients.

During the German occupation, Irena lived in Warsaw and worked as a social worker. She has been helping Jews since 1939. Through the organization, she produced 3,000 forged documents to help Jewish families. This activity was very dangerous because the Germans threatened to kill everyone in Poland if they hid the Jews, which was not the case in the rest of occupied Europe.

In December 1942, the newly established organization Žegoti elected Irena Sendler (under the pseudonym Jolanta) as the head of the children's section. As a social worker, she was allowed to enter the Warsaw ghetto and check for typhus. The Nazis feared that this disease could spread beyond the ghetto.

She organized the secret evacuation of Jewish children from the ghetto by taking them to boxes, suitcases and carts. In the back of the car she had a dog trained to start barking if German soldiers wanted to enter and exit the ghetto. inspect the car.

The soldiers were greatly hindered by the dog with its loud barking, and above all it would cover up possible children's voices. In this way it saved 2,500 children.

Varšavska geto, 1941

When she was imprisoned, the Nazis broke her arms and legs and tortured her terribly. Irena kept a list of children she had rescued from the Warsaw ghetto and buried it in a bottle behind a tree at the edge of her house’s garden.

In 2007, the Polish parliament unanimously passed a resolution honoring Irena for "organizing the rescue of the most helpless victims of Nazi ideology: Jewish children." life in a gas cell. The children were placed in many surrogate families or put up for adoption. She was nominated for a Nobel Prize, but was then awarded to Al Gore for his film on global warming.

Irena Sendler, majka djece holokausta

Irena was an only child, but she had a son and a daughter. Her daughter, Janka, still lives in Warsaw, Poland, and her son Adam passed away in 1999 (interestingly enough, the day the Life in a Jar project started on September 23rd). Adam’s daughter, Irena’s granddaughter Agniesa, is the same age as the girls who started the Life in a Jar project.
