I Fell In Love With The Devil

I wrote an article yesterday with the word angel, so now I am writing an article with the word devil. Similar to yesterday, this article really does not have anything to do with religion. So please give it a read before you judge it. Before anything else, I want to thank my sponsors for their support. If you are a Black Star (Avril Lavigne fans) like me, chances are you are already familiar from where I got the title. I got the idea to write an article about her song, "I Fell In Love With The Devil" when I was sketching a practice portrait of her. This portrait is part of my practice to complete one goal I set for myself this August. I have been a fan of her since I was young but this is the first time I made a drawing of her and I must say that I am really proud of it. I will edit it more so that I can attain as an August goal.

Anyway, as I was sketching it, the lines from her song kept repeating in my mind and I could not get it out of my head. So I just decided to write what I think about her song. I have included lyrics from her music so I can expand it with my thoughts. I do not own her music nor do I claim them as mine. When I first heard it, I thought that it goes well with her song Birdie. In that song, she mentioned a girl being treated like a bird. She was kept in a cage with expensive stuff but it is still her prison. Where one clearly has the power over the other, and they are unable to stop any kind of abuse that is going on. Now, I am not going on a debate here whether people have a choice in a toxic relationship because that is a complicated topic. I think it is easy to think that one should do the logical thing and leave the toxic relationship when it is viewed from the outside. But when you are the one stuck in that place, it can be extremely hard to see that there is an out. Even if you know that you are not in the place that you wanted, finding the strength and courage to leave will be difficult. I personally know this which is why Birdie and I Fell In Love With The Devil are songs that are really close to my heart. The following will be my own interpretation of the lyrics. Please note that I have not read any interpretation of the song since its release and any similarities that you might find online will be purely coincidental. I am after all going to reference my own struggle with a toxic relationship. Shotguns and roses make a deadly potion Heartbreak explosions in reckless motion Teddy bears and "I'm sorry" letters Don't seem to make things better Don't bury me alive Sweet talkin' alibi In this verse, she opens up about the things that happened in the relationship. In a toxic relationship, a lot of fights will happen which either resulted in cold shoulders making you feel unloved or in explosive arguments. This would be followed by sweet nothings as if the things that happened in the fight were nothing but figments of your imagination. At the start of the relationship, that sweet nothings will work like a charm in making you forget the argument, but after a while, things will feel weird. That is the feeling of wrongness finally catching up to you. But I-I-I-I-I can't stop the rush And I-I-I-I-I can't give you up No, I-I-I-I-I know you're no good for me You're no good for me Here, you can see her knowledge and admittance that she knows it is not healthy. However she can't stop the relationship because it gives her rush. This is one tactic of people who have the upper hand in toxic relationships. They will hurt you multiple times, but then show you they love you for a few days. Make you feel loved and lucky to have them. Those scarce days serve to make you hesitate in leaving because you will think to yourself that you experience happy times in the relationship so the bad ones are probably normal. I fell in love with the Devil And now I'm in trouble I fell in love with the Devil I'm underneath his spell (Oh-oh-oh-oh) Someone send me an angel To lend me a halo I fell in love with the Devil Please, save me from this hell (Oh-oh-oh-oh) While having arguments in a relationship is normal, being gaslighted or manipulated to the extent that you doubt yourself is not a sign of healthy relationship. All those acts should be red flags. Arguments are meant to be dealt with healthily, not dealt with emotional blows and attacks. In the chorus, she is asking for an angel to lend her a halo. I interpreted it to mean as asking someone for help. Like I said earlier, when you are in a toxic relationship, it will be hard to do the healthy thing which is leaving. Sometimes, we need someone one else to be there for us to help us escape the situation we found ourselves in. Sadly, this support is hard to come by, as many people will get tired of watching someone stay in an obviously harmful relationship. So instead of being there when the victim finally got the courage to leave, they have already forgotten someone who needed their help. So if you know someone who is in a toxic relationship, just offer your support. Wait for them to gather their nerves. Do not try to be aggressive about their need to leave a harmful relationship immediately as it might set them on a defensive mode and not want to hear from you again. Just let them know that you will be there. If the person is in a super dangerous position, then maybe you can involve authorities. I honestly do not know more aside from what I experienced. So for anyone who has some knowledge about this, feel free to inform us about it. This is in fact where they start to relish it. Or maybe it is a reference to some relapse that could happen even if they did managed to get out. But with the words here, I think this is more of the former than the latter. Closing thoughts Being in a toxic relationship is hard even when you know you are in one. The awareness of being in one does not suddenly give one the courage to leave. For some, it might even be a curse because they would have rather remain blind of the toxicity they experienced. From the outside, it might seem like a small thing being blown out of proportion but it is different when you are the one in a toxic relationship. But I pray that no one else experience the pain of being in a toxic relationship. If you know anyone stuck in a similar situation, I hope that you never get tired of them. Please be there to show support but know that you cannot solve the problem by yourself.
