Dilemmas of Data Privacy

As a human, we have many rights.

The fundamental right is freedom of speech. The second most important right is the privacy of our human identity.

  • I am a supporter of freedom and privacy. I strongly feel that we must have the privilege of enjoying these fundamental human rights.

But, in many places, governments are after intercepting the citizens' lives with high-tech sensors and unprecedented control.

Digital identities of global citizens are not privacy protected!

Do the governments support the citizens' right to privacy? Unfortunately not.

  • On the contrary, government-owned digital identity projects around the globe have little scope for preserving and protecting citizens' personal data privacy.

In fact, most governments' digital identity projects didn't have priorities and/or security features for protecting the citizens' personal data. Their primary concern was to control the citizens.

  • For example, India's national digital identity project, which is called AADHAAR, had serious security issues.

  • The entire AADHAAR database was available in the dark market for only a tiny amount of INR500. That means the security of the AADHAAR servers was too easy to be cracked by data hackers.

  • Moreover, the biometric database of AADHAAR was not encrypted! If the AADHAAR data were privacy protected, the leaked database wouldn't have made any issues.

Governments took more of citizens' personal data under their control during the past so-called pandemic on the pretext of scanning people's mobile phones and locations of the new virus infection!

Of course, there are cons to data privacy of human identities.

  • Police departments can track mobile phones and try to locate suspected criminals. If the mobile SIMs were numberless and KYC-free, there could be no way a SIM may be tracked.

  • Anonymous banking transactions may leave the income tax controlling authorities completely blind about who made what the transactions. That is why governments are so much against cryptocurrencies.

However, criminals and terrorists would never use SIM cards under their names! So many illegal SIM cards are available in the (dark) market that is issued under common citizens' names! Criminals and terrorists use those phones!

In many cases, police departments found that SIM cards used by suspected people are under the names of people who don't know about such numbers and are issued under their government-issued digital IDs.

Conclusion

  • The fundamental right is freedom of speech. The second most important right is the privacy of our human identity.

  • Most governments' digital identity projects didn't have priorities and/or security features for protecting the citizens' personal data. Their primary concern was to control the citizens.

  • There are, of course, some cons to data privacy of human identities. Some evil people may take advantage of privacy-featured digital identities and get away with doing crimes!

  • However, criminals and terrorists would never use SIM cards under their own names! They use SIM cards illegally issued on common people's names!

There remains a doubt if the golabl citizens would get the privilege of owning privacy-protected digital identity.

I am a practitioner of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), and I have always smelled security holes in blockchains and other distributed ledgers. But, the innovations in distributed computing are worth experimenting with in real-life use cases.

  • I create password security and cybersecurity solutions relevant to cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and blockless distributed ledgers.
