Nothing is new under the Sun
It was late at night, and on the bed I lay; refecting on my life. I was not in a good mood throughout the day. The only comforting thing were the songs hitting my ear drums from my earpiece.
As most of us know music are very therapeutic in nature as they make us feel better especially when the song we are listening to relate with the way we are currently feeling.
That night I found solace in a french song titled "L'enfer" by the artist called "Stromae". Even though I initially didn't understood majority of what was said in the song I still enjoyed it.
One fact about good Music is that it cut beyond boundaries, language and culture.
I finally decided to check on the translation of the song lyrics in English. And it was then I got the full gist of what the song was all about.
I won't go into full details about the song maybe another time, but there's something in the lyrics that caught my attention that I reflected on. Part of the lyrics that was translated into English was
"Everything I have ever thought of
To say that many others have thought about it".
This part made me remember "how nothing is new on earth". Everything that seems to be happening today, name it; war, love, hatred, betrayal and so on, had happened long time ago and haven't ceased. It will continue to happen, as we are living through an endless cycle of growth and decay, death and birth, etc.
Empires and civilizations have been built, destroyed and replaced with another. This current civilisation too won't last forever.
Technological advancement
The only thing that differentiates this generation from the previous generations are the inventions and discoveries we have now. These inventions and discoveries changes; "the way we to do things", "the way we think" and "the laws we make". But it won't change the human nature in us, because that is unchangeable.
There was a time humans were in the Stone age, then we moved into the iron age and now we're in the computer age. Everything is now done by microprocessors that are so tiny.
We all hail the technological advancement that we have today, the advance in medicine and surgery, the advancement in communication, in travelling.
But these technological advancements also comes with powerful weaponry that are more deadly and lethal than any weapon in the history of mankind. We humans now have the power to destroy the whole planet in matter of minutes.
Just like all civilization and empires that had a beginning our current dispensation will also have an end one day. It is a matter of fact because with such powers in our hands, it's just a matter of time before we humans misuse it.
Well I'm not a doomsday messenger but it is just a natural tendency of humans. Just like the popular quote.
"power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely"
It has happened numerous times in history and it will continue to repeat itself.
Europe is an hotbed
Europe as a continent has been a hotbed for political tension, conflict and war; ever since time immemorial. Since the collapse of the Roman empire, there had been one crisis to the other. Years of war and disagreement was what lead to the "first world war".
Despite many alliance, treaties and international agreements that were put in place to prevent war in future and to guarantee peace. It only took 21 years for a bigger and deadlier war to happen; "the second world war".
We can say it is just a matter of time before the third world war happens and we definitely know that the whole civilization and technological advancement will be reduced to zero.
The present predicament
The current tension building in the world today between the western countries and Russia, U.S and China, China and its neighbours, Israel and Iran, Pakistan and India, and some many other conflicts between other countries I can't list here are pointing to a bigger conflicts and crisis in the future.
As days pass by; rather than the World Powers settling their differences the gulf between them is getting wider. Countries are in a race with one another; technological, militarily, economical and so on.
The war in Ukraine for example is enough to trigger a third world war. Just a little mistake from any party could result in a global war.
Many people do not realize that what lead to the First World War and Second World War isn't as grave or perhaps just equivalent of what is happening between Russia and Ukraine today.
M.A.D
Perhaps the only thing keeping the world from a nuclear warfare is MAD. MAD is an acronym that stands for "Mutual Assured Destruction". It is when a nation has the capacity and power to retaliate any nuclear attack.
United States of America and the Russian federation and some other countries have this capability. An attack on a country can be responded to from many places for example from submarines or from secret nuclear silos.
Conclusion
Before you get lost in that thought. Or while you lament that situation remember someone has definitely experienced it before.
Excellent article you friend. There is no change under our sun, whether it is a war, the killing of technologies, it is all visible to our 2 eyes.
