Happy weekend guys. It is another moment to share how the weekend has been from this end. Waking up this morning to see the rain pouring down heavily brought some kind of feeling. At first, the rain drizzled and stopped. Probably for those who are going out of their homes.
Since Lagos is surrounded by water, the aquatic splendour often fetched from the lagoon, sea and ocean adds spice to food that is available in the markets for residence. Lobsters, crabs, fishes, and many more aquatic habitat, fresh and life and there to serve our taste buds. The only problem is how to manage the waterways and make it advantageous or should I say beneficial to residence and neighbours.
Yesterday, the weather forecast on television had predicted a heavy downpour, you know sometimes the weather information does not tally with what is later experienced. Today, in the reverse, the predictions had come real. The rains had no pity, it rained continuously for several hours.
After several hours of the heavy downpour, floods took over the main road, some highways also got flooded. This may be caused by a poor drainage system in the metropolis or poor usage of the drainage. Now the vehicles have to ply pedestrian part of the road.
In some other areas, the roads were covered such that vehicles dare not move through them. Now, workers in parts of the city have to trek long distances to their homes. Funny enough, some walkway home is no more accessible. The only means is to board a paddled boat home. This opportunity has brought immediate revenue to canoe owners.
This is the waterfront of the famous Lagos Civic Centre in the Ozumba-Mbadiwe street on Lagos Island. The Lagos lagoon is now filled due to the heavy downpour.
The occupants of this house must have run out else, it could be said that it is dangerous to live in after the downpour. Do not be surprised because nine minutes of rain in Turkey some years ago was pulling a house from the foundation.
In all, this is an indication that the weather history of the world is not the same as it had been some years ago. One would want to know what has caused all this. Climate change is a big issue and it threatens the existence of mankind on the planet.
Bush burning and other illegal activities have been advised against by meteorologists around the world. Yet, numbers of people, local farmers, and residents would also set ablaze renewable energy sources causing a depletion in the ozone layer.
The release of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere is another big problem. Industrial wastes that are emitted into the air are uncontrollably affecting our planet and are a major cause for the changes we have been witnessing in recent times.
Causes of flood
β One major cause of flood in cities of the world is broken dams. When a dam get broken, the volume of water present in the dam gushes to the metropolis. Broken dam is part of what happened in the US in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.
β At a time like this, when the rain came down heavily, our streams and waterways increases in volume and the water flows out to the main town causing flood. People who live along coastal lines should expect the experience of flooding.
β When a city fails to encourage vegetation program, flood can take over such a place. Plants like legumes can control flooding. The reverse of the case is that flooding or erosion would avail in places where there is no vegetation.
