There are also castles, palaces, museums and churches among the most varied and unique buildings in Spain, which everyone should see live at least once. Let's take a look at them - now through the screen!
1. Palacio Real, Madrid
Never miss the imposing Baroque building of the Royal Palace of Madrid (Spanish: Palacio Real) when you visit Madrid! With more than 130,000 square feet and 3,418 rooms, the present form of the building began to be built in the 1700s — eventually completed in 1764. Although the castle is currently owned by a Spanish royal family, they do not live here (instead spending their daily lives in the much more modest Zarzuela Palace, on the outskirts of Madrid), using the Royal Palace only for more noisy ceremonies and big celebrations.
2. Sagrada Familia, Barcelona
Located in the center of Barcelona, the world-famous Sagrada Familia is still under construction and has been under construction for more than a century - yet the building dreamed up by Antoni Gaudi was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984. The Roman Catholic Basilica is otherwise Art Nouveau (new art) and Art Nouveau style, and when completed will be the largest basilica in the world - with 18 peaks according to Gaudí’s plans (currently 8 are completed).
3. Casa Mila, Barcelona
Gaudi’s other iconic edifice is this traditional five-storey cave-style house without a facade, located in central Barcelona. Casa Mila was built between 1906 and 1912 for the very affluent Mila family, who lived on the first floor (the other levels were rented out), and today art exhibitions and various cultural programs are held here. The building has been a member of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1984.
4. Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao
The most emblematic building in the city is the Guggenheim Museum, completed in 1997, thanks to Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. It is currently considered the most modern art museum in the world: from 20th century masterpieces to almost all contemporary exhibitions, think of Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor or Louise Bourgeois - so the building is not just outside, but inside too. The museum also covers an area of 32,500 square meters (of which 24,000 is reserved for exhibitions only) and consists of more than 33,000 pieces of titanium sheets.
5. Plaza de Espana, Seville
In the most important city in the region of Andalusia, the beautiful Seville, there is a "Spanish square" for this, which is essentially a huge area full of moats with a semicircular building complex. Although it sticks out a bit from the list because it’s not specifically a structure, but a space that also includes a building complex, I definitely wanted to include it in the compilation - I hope you don’t mind.
The Plaza de Espana was originally built for the 1929 Ibero-American World's Fair, but is now used by government agencies. Interestingly, each Spanish province around the building has a small pottery section, which is a huge experience to walk through. An unmissable program if you visit the area!
