Water crisis in Pakistan
Pakistan is part of 36 countries that are water-stressed there are several factors that Pakistan is facing water crisis such as management of water system, climate change, population increase in urban areas, and agriculture. If the problem of water is not solved in Pakistan the result will be worse for every Pakistani. The yearly water availability is less than 1,000 cubic meters per person and the country crossed this level in 2005. If it reaches 500 cubic meters it will become a country that is absolutely scared of water by 2025. Many peoples of Pakistan already facing the crisis of water about 75 percent to 80 percent of people of Pakistan living in 24 Major cities and they don't have access to clean water 16 million people of Karachi do not have access to water in their hometown. They are totally dependent on water trucks to fulfill their personal and family needs and they pay for the water which they drink. A water truck comes once in week people go into the lines for some amount of water. Pakistan is the sixth-largest country in the world with 220 to 240 million people now Pakistan water demands could reach 274 million acre-feet but the supply of water is 191 acre-feet
Pakistan is an agricultural country and is totally dependent on proper water supply for its well-being. But due to a poor water management system, almost 50% of water is lost due to evaporation during irrigation. Many other countries facing water shortage, have switched to drip irrigation to save their valuable resources. In this way, they utilize their limited supply of water in the best possible way.
One of the major reasons for water crises is the water mafia. These are people who try to create situations like water shortage so that people may become dependent on them to buy water from their so-called pure water businesses. They get involved in water theft and interrupt the water supply to major cities and then sell that water by filling in their trucks. There are mafias working and earning from this illegal way.
Another reason for water scarcity is the growing urban population. Due to this, the supply of water remains less than the need. When it comes to pure and clean water, citizens have to compromise on their basic right to clean water access. Government has to do proper urban planning to control this situation.
Lack of dams is also a major cause of water shortage. Pakistan has 2000 small and large glaciers. But most of the water is lost into the sea as a country has a lack of dams. Pakistan is a financially weak country and does not has many resources to build water storage systems. As a result, the country has to face water scarcity in the coming 3 to 4 years.
Trees are supposed to be the main source. A country is supposed to have 25% forest area as a save limit. But Pakistan has only 5-7% forest land. Due to this, there is less rain in the region and as a result, the south side of the country is converting to the desert. Now the government is taking initiatives to plant more and more. Yearly 2-3 plantation drives are run in the country to grow more trees.
In 2018 the government of Pakistan called people for the Dam fund. There is a need for $14 billion. Pakistan government has started two projects in this regard. Diameter bhasha Dam and DASU dam as well-known projects which are under construction and are supposed to be completed within the next 4-5 years. There is a need to use water resources wisely. Even though a single person can’t do much, but drops make a river. The government is taking actions to save the upcoming generation from droughts a scarcity. We have to play pour part and donate more in this regard as well as educate our community so that we could have a better future than supposed.
