Invest in our Planet
April 22, 2022
Days ago, #LetTheEarthBreathe made rounds online after several scientists and activists voiced their message to #LetTheEarthBreathe amid the climate crisis.
This is so timely as today we celebrate Earth Day. It was first celebrated in 1970 through the efforts of a senator from Wisconsin, United States. By 1990, it is celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe.
But more than posting #LetTheEarthBreathe ads and more than greeting every earthling a 'Happy Earth Day, we carry the responsibility to protect and preserve our planet. It is sad to think that some of us are just posting #LetTheEarthBreathe and not walking the talk.
We still subscribe to the old ways and do not mind the little steps we could take for us to do good for our environment. Just like how we businessmen provide single plastics in their water vending machine. I think it would be nice to not provide plastic containers there as it would force consumers to bring their tumblers or glasses.
At home, we still have a plastic bag that is full of used plastic bags. Those are what we have accumulated from the many times we shop in different stores. Imagine every home having that plastic bag that stores a lot of plastic bags. Not to mention the cap of soft drinks that some people use to light a fire for them to start cooking. These are just some of the many things that we tend to overlook. It is now time to start bringing our eco-bags to the market. Time for us to have tumblers as our best friends. Manufacturers won't stop producing bottled waters until consumers stop buying those.
We have to be more intentional in taking our part to save what we can save. There are little things that are overlooked. Just like fashion. We tend to buy more clothes but we rarely wear them all. The fashion industry is responsible for over 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions. This just means that the more we acquire clothes, the more we contribute to the destruction of our planet. We need to subscribe to sustainable fashion. There are sustainable practices in sourcing, production, distribution, marketing, and consumption. Buy only what you can wear.
There are still plenty of ways for us to help protect and preserve our planet. We just have to be keen and sincere in observing it.
Meanwhile, here is my cousin sharing her ways how she can help save the Earth. Click here.

Anyway, this year's theme is Invest in our Planet. Since everyone is accountable, we are all tasked to take bold and concrete steps to combat the world's greatest threat - climate change. The government, citizens and businesses should all take part in preserving our planet, its inhabitants and our livelihood.
NASA and the official Earth Day network have prepared online and in-person events aimed at promoting the beauty of planet Earth and providing ways on how we can help protect it.
How about you? How would you let the earth breathe?
I'm certain that all of us have a thing or two in mind as answers to these questions. I hope each one of us would do our part.
This Earth Day, may the call of the scientist and activist not fall on deaf ears.
