One morning of 693 CE. The monastery of the monks on the coast of Northumbria woke up as usual. There was no defense system in that monastery . In those days, it was unbelievable that a person could come , such this place to steal or rob. But it turned out that a group of people, like wild animals, suddenly attacked the mon astery. The monks were brutally killed by heavy weapons. They came with a big boat & went back after filling up the boat with looted goods!
According to many documents, this is believed to be the first attack by the Vikings. Known as pirates, this nation originated from Scandinavia. The place is located in Northern Europe; Which consisted of Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
These barbaric Vikings were people from different worlds, who were different from all the other warriors. The Vikings' success was not limited to looting and robbery. They were skilled in war, intelligence or construction, has traveled the world for centuries.
Many historians believe that the word Viking comes from the Scandinavian word 'Vikingr'. Which means pirate or ocean; Those who waited for summer all year round. Because, only then they could go out for robbery. They used to loot and then exchange them for different products.
The Vikings have so far committed all sorts of robbery atrocities. They did not hesitate to rob from small villages to churches. Even they went up to Russia and the Caspian Sea to the east. The group sailed across from the Atlantic to North America five centuries before Columbus. The Vikings were barbaric. But they had artists, explorers and researchers damn!
The Vikings' habitat was thought to be entirely rural. Most of the people made a living by farming or fishing. They were instrumental in building high quality ships in the 7th and 8th centuries. Being able to use sunlight to guide them, they did not have much difficulty in crossing the vast sea.
After the invasion of 693, the Vikings invaded Scotland, Ireland and France. However, none of the victims identified them as viking! The name became famous in the 11th century.
The most famous of the Vikings is Ivar the Boneless, who was the leader of the great army gang. The gang robbed East Anglia in 865. He is considered the father of the Viking Kingdom of Dublin.
Of course, many do not know why Ivar's nickname was 'The Boneless'. Many think that Ivar's body flexibility was much higher than other members. Again there's another myth that he may have had a muscle disease that made his body more flexible than others. We still can't say the actual reason! By the way the other famous Vikings are Eric Bloodaxe, Leif Erikson,Erik the Red & so on.
At that time Iceland was a region where the light of civilization didn't reach properly. Many of you may like the character Thor of Marvel Cinematic Universe,,Thor's father is Odin, The All Father. Among the old gods, the Vikings worshiped Odin and Thor. Thor's hammer was also popular among the Vikings. ⚒️
A word associated with the name of the Vikings is ‘Valhalla’. Means that the dining room of the heroes, who were killed in the war. The Vikings thought that Odin would invite them to Valhalla if they were killed in battle; Which is a huge room made of gold. It has 540 doors on its walls. There are drinks and food arrangements. After death, they fought hard to win such rewards.
So far there are many myths about the Vikings. When you hear the name Viking, many people think of a warrior wearing horned head armor. But in reality the Vikings did not use any such armor. Don't be amazed! It's the actual fact :)
Interestingly, the Vikings were far ahead in terms of girls' freedom in that era.
