While waiting for a friend to arrive home tonight, let me just share to you some Cebuano words and their meanings and how they are used here in our place. By the way, this friend that will arrive tonight will stay here at home for six weeks as she needs to work on site for that span of time.

Anyway, let's start ...

photo from fb page (cannot find the link)
  • GUGMA

Tagalog: Pagmamahal

English: Love

Do I have to explain this word still? All of us know what love is. Love is the best variety of feeling. And we have different forms of love. They say, you can do anything with it. Like, tatawirin and dagat. Aakyatin ang bundok. Susungkitin ang mga bituin. But in love, we need to always know when to stop and to know our limitations. Some things are better left unsaid and undone.

  • CHOYA

Tagalog: Lupet

  • English: Amazing

Pardon me for this word. I really have a difficulty on how I would explain this one. Here in Cebu or other Bisaya places, it is actually an expression or slang word we used to show how we get amazed on something. Like if we saw something unusual or anything new to us, we used to say "Choya ana bay!" Its like, "Wow! That's amazing."

  • LAYSHO

Tagalog: Sosyal

English: Classy

This slang word in Cebuano is used actually if we saw or encounter something nice and classy. Its like an expression of appreciation. Like if someone we know got a new thing, we used to say "Ka laysho ana uy." Which means, "Hey, that's nice." Or we saw a unique house, we say "Ka laysho sa balay."

  • PURYA BUYAG

Tagalog: Pwera Usog

English: Go away, curse

There's actually no fix or actual translation of this word in English or maybe I just don't know how it said. But it is actually used to rebuke some bad things to happen. Like in ancient times, when someone greeted a baby and say "Wow! Such a cute baby." We used to say, "Purya buyag!" to prevent the baby from getting sick. It actually came from the superstitious belief our grandparents most of the time. But in this times, we mostly used it as a joke especially if someone will compliment us like, "Oh. You're so pretty." and we say, "Purya buyag".

  • PUHON

Tagalog: Malapit na

English: Soon

This is actually my favourite Cebuano word. It gives me a lot of hope that better days are coming. Just me, saying "Puhon." gives me more strength to continue for what ever I am dreaming of, because for sure with determination and perseverance things will be put into places. Let's continue, "Puhon, ako na sad." that means, "Soon, it will be my time."

  • DASIG LANG

Tagalog: Huwag sumuko

English: Hold on/Never give up

My second favourite Cebuano word. Just like "puhon" it gives me more courage to continue. To hold on and not to give up. I usually say these words to myself everytime I feel like giving up. I'll talk to myself and say, "Dasig lang. Mahuman ra ning tanan." or "Just hold on. You'll get through this."

That's all for today beautiful people. If you have any thoughts about this, feel free to leave it in the comment section below. Let's interact. Stay safe always! Xoxo ✨☺️
